Isn't there a semi documentary about this engine being tracked down in Turkey, and some one had written not for scrap on it which may have saved it? I also remember the enthusiasm of the people that rescued it, and with out the help from the Turkish railways ,and people ,I doubt it would have happened, if this so it would great to see the film, then I might be completely wrong,
'Battered but un-bowed' ....her classic Stanier lines still show through after the ill-treatment she's obviously had. Well done for recovering her back to UK. Her sisters provided much 'lineside-entertainment' when I was growing up on the East Lancs line! :)
I photographer her a number of years ago in the Turkish National Railway Museum near Selçuk. Great to see her home.
Almost un-recognisable underneath all the additional crap but still, undeniably, a Stanier 8F. Good to see a loco coming home
Back in 1972 in India I cabbed a North British company made 2-6-0 Indian railways freight locomotive that had been shipped to India by the LNER in 1930s prior to WW2 outbreak
I actually saw 45170 in person a few weeks back on my trip, the guy at the counter said that someone comes in here everyday to work on her, I want to come back and help if I'm ever in the UK again.
She was built for the British War Department and sent overseas for the war effort. She then ended up in the Turkish State Railways as did other examples of the class in Hong Kong, Israel, Greece etc and their respective railways. So she is effectively 'coming home' to the UK. I no longer live in the UK but am still British. Also yes, there were actually two returned by ship at the same time.
were the two locos on a ep of heavy haulers UK
Hopefully they keep the turkish appearance? Unlike what a american narrow gauge railroad did with an US built 2-8-0 from from cuba, which had an extended coal bunker and a centred headlight, and made it look like all of the other locos of it's class that are still around. I prefer to keep a unique looking loco unique looking.
Here's a picture of 45166 which was in the yard at sivas in Turkey the same time as 45160 , these are there turkish fleet numbers
Where’s the other one from turkey that was recovered?
Saw a programme about two 8fs being shipped back to U.K. weren't they nicknamed the Churchill s
How far has the restoration progressed ?
Thanks.
add question but do where know where she is now i know 2 came home back and one was sent back to turkey and one stayed but do we know where the one still at home currently is?
What's the plan for this locomotive?
48170 (i) think, 45000 were black 5s
Where was this one built...? Did she run as an LMS loco and was Impressed - or was she built specifically for the WD...?
were do you all get this number 45170 from As Stanier 8F class were numbered from 48000
This Wiki link explains it- as it is the Turkish number, not a BR number. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCDD_45151_Class
45170 IS the correct number. even though b.r black 5's were 45xx, these turkish 8f's were 45's. the other one is 8274 was on glos wos. think on loan to ruddington
Looks a bit American from the front
