  • At the end of our dive on the dive site known as "The Trench" off of West Palm Beach, Florida we had the encounter of a lifetime! My wife, Brittany, our niece Addie, and our Dive Guide Craig Buss from Pura Vida Divers were the last 4 divers in the water ascending from approximately 60'. This whale shark graced us with its presence for approximately 1 minute, in approximately 30 feet of water, surrounded by nearly 100 remora's and 20+ cobia's.

    What!? Off the Trench!? I've been planning a trip to the South Pacific *to* hopefully see a Whale Shark. I'd never thought that it was possible just north of my inlet. Congratulations on your good fortune!

    Great footage and exceptional videography. Last time I got to see one of these leviathans was in 2003. (Galapagos) Thanks!

    This is by far my favorite animal... I'm beyond jealous. Do you have any photographs I could use as computer wallpaper? By all means water mark or put your signature on it. This is amazing.

    Why all these different species of fish tagging along for the ride?

    @joycebrown8608 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Everyone out there, please inform. I am somewhat ignorant regarding sealife, I admit. However, I am VASTLY curious as to the other smaller fish. Why do they hang on like that, and HOW do they hang on? Thank you so very much for photographing this most beautiful sight, and sharing it with the whole world. U R Awesome! Sincerely, Joyce Brown, Southern California

      They have a suction section on top of their head and attach themselves to large marine animals to clean them. That's the long skinny fish you see called a remora. The larger fish that have a "shark look" to them are cobia.

    • @erickjaime632
      @erickjaime632 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes Remoras (sucker fish) can be found inside of the Whale Shark's mouth. The WS acts as host while the Remora takes care of the parasites on the WS.

      Thanks from the bottom of my mouth. HAHA.
      I have always sympathized with large animals of the sea about the barnicles all over them. Would these sucker fish be able to help them with those?

    I was out for my certification dive on that exact day in west palm and missed it. I was at breakers reef and I'm curious how far that is from this.

    • @hvyhemi
      @hvyhemi  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe 500-600 yards from the breakers.

    • @jrodgaming2422

      About how far off shore was it

    • @hvyhemi
      @hvyhemi  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not even a mile. The dive site is only 60 feet deep.

      kbscubadiver wow that must've been a crazy experience. All I saw was a turtle and a bunch of lobster. Crazy how close it was.

    What is the other shark looking fish? Time 0:56 there is a close up of one at the bottom of the frame.

    • @hvyhemi
      @hvyhemi  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jay! It's a cobia, commonly found with bull sharks. They are a scavenger fish.

    • @travelingwithrick
      @travelingwithrick 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be careful if you see a bull shark. They are smart, menacing and can swim in fresh water too.

    awesome ... the open ocean is the ONLY place they should be. And look at all the lampreys and other fish surrounding it.

      my husband and I were certified to 60 feet back in 1988. Have yet to do an open water dive. Would so love to do this and be able to see one of these magnificent creatures. (unfortunately, my husband passed away before we could do an OWD together. One of these days)
