    A few weeks ago I showed you how to move your photos to another hard drive in Luminar. If you want to move your entire Luminar library to an external hard drive, you need to move the catalog as well.
    This video shows how to move your Luminar catalog to another hard drive. Mac users have a choice between two methods. Windows users need to do the move with the Explorer. The video shows both methods. The methods are also outlined on my blog at scottdavenport...

    Thank you very much Scott, this information was exactly what I was looking for!
    I successfully changed my Luminar AI and Neos Catalog locations to stop OneDrive uploading it's data into the cloud (which I didn't wanted)

    I have a new MacBookAir M1. All my pictures are in a folder on my JottaCloud ( cloud service). I have a Luminar catalog, but when I open Luminar from that catalog, there are zero fotos. What can I do?

    Thanks for the help Scott.
    I have a 256gb M2 NVME drive as my windows drive.
    I noticed Luminar was crashing constantly and upon checking my C drive, there was only 11gb of space left....not nearly enough.
    My Neo catalog was only 13gb and A.I. was almost 4gb so I've moved then both.
    Right clicking didn't give me the "open with" option, so I just opened it anyway and pointed the program to the new location.
    Jobs a good un and almost 18gb of space freed up on my System drive :)

    Another question if I may. Thx for this - I really appreciate your help. If I right click on the folder in the new destination, the only Luminar related ootion I get is: Compress Neo Catalog. Please advise.

      Can’t say on that one. I haven’t worked with Luminar as a catalog for a while now… I guess the options have changed.

    The catolog is still sitting on my hard drive although I have moved it to my ext drive as well. Can I delete this folder in my hard drive?

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are confident that you are using the catalog on your hard drive, yes. As a security measure, always backup. Also, consider first renaming the catalog on your hard drive first (like “old-catalog-don’t-use”) so Luminar wouldn’t automatically find it. I’m always a little extra careful when removing catalogs. Good luck.

    Hi Scott, have you got any advise on doing this in Luminar AI? Doesn't look like there is a Library tab

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luminar AI, when run standalone, has a Library tab. It should work, but I have not tested it. Also, I no longer advocate using Luminar as your photo asset manager. Skylum is not investing in this area. More thoughts: scottdavenportphoto.com/blog/luminar-ai-is-not-your-dam-asset-manager

    Hey Scott, I think you might be able to help me. I had all my luminar 4 library on an ext hard drive, recently it needed reformating. So I backed up all the files, then reformatted ext HD. BUT- i think here, I made a mistake, I think the HD had been partitioned (I'm on a Mac BTW), so even though the files are back in ostensibly the same place, Luminar can't find them anymore, which is kinda really, really frustrating. Is there anyway I can connect them up again? At the moment I can't even seem to open the files direct from the HD onto Luminar, which is weird, it's like Luminar thinks it already has them, then it just puts up the previews with the little white triangle in the corner. Any hints would be gratefully received. Cheers

      @ScottDavenport  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul ... you may want to consult the community pages at Skylum's site if you haven't already. Right-clicking on a 'missing' folder should offer a "Locate" option to reconnect it to your catalog. That being said, Luminar catalogs are relatively fragile and reconnects unforgiving if you mis-click. Take slow, measured steps.

      thanks Scott, much appreciate your reply. I think even the terminology 'locate a missing file' is going to help here. I'll keep you posted If I discover anything great.

    I used LR before. Now I want to use Luminar mostly. Can I use the same Place with all my pictures to Booth programs?

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marianne ... by "Place" ... I assume you're referring to a folder or set of folders. Yes, you can have multiple non-destructive editors reference the same folder of RAW images. Each editing application - Lightroom, Luminar, etc. - maintains their own set of edits. I'm not a particular fan of this type of workflow, because it is complex and your non-destructive edits from one editor are not visible in another.

    Scott, very helpful information. Do these tips on moving the catalog & photos to an external drive also apply to Luminar AI? Additionally, because I’m using an older laptop for editing (when downstairs also watching sports on TV) - I then will move the edited photos to my external drive, so when I want to edit on my desktop, I’ll have everything intact on the external drive. Due to the age of my laptop, not terribly old, but I have elected to create a new catalog for each set of photos, that catalog contained in the photo directory. My thinking was to avoid a massive catalog file containing the pointers to my entire set of photos. Naturally only the ones processed through Luminar AI. Is that a valid concern, or is the catalog processing in Luminar AI, efficient enough to just use a single catalog file? Thanks for your help, videos & presentation style. Extremely helpful. • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill ... it should apply to Luminar AI. The catalog hasn't changed much at all from Luminar 4 to Luminar AI. Wrt single vs multiple catalogs, that's a personal choice. I must also say that I no longer recommend Luminar for long-term cataloging because Skylum is IMHO clearly stepping back from asset management. scottdavenportphoto.com/blog/luminar-ai-is-not-your-dam-asset-manager

    Hi Scott: I enjoy your tutorial much. I have a quick question. My hard drive in my computer is filling up. I intend to move all my files to an external hard drive. I copied all files in the Pictures folder where I have the catalog files and a separate folder with all my pictures onto the external drive. On opening the catalog file in the external drive I could not see all my edits. I suspect the catalog file still makes reference to the original raw picture files. Is there any way I can make the transfer so as to free up my internal drive?

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shiu ... have a look at www.scottdavenportphoto.com/blog/how-to-move-folders-to-another-hard-drive-in-luminar-4
      You can't just copy/move the photos using Finder/Explorer or you lose the edits. Your edits are in the Luminar catalog and *not* stored with your photos. You need to do the move in Luminar, so Luminar can keep its catalog consistent.

    Thanks for another great tip, Scott. While I don’t comment much, I love all your tips and videos. What prompted me this time was you mentioning you could hear your hard drive grinding away. I’m sure you meant ‘working’ but the x-enthusiast computer builder in me got alarmed. Is it any non-normal noise, even slightly? Hard drives should not make any grinding noise. For example I have multiple HDDs in the system an arm’s length away and don’t hear them at all. Just color me concerned…

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! "Grinding" was not the best choice of words. Yes, *working*. It was not an unusual sound when my drives are writing a lot of data. That does remind me though ... I'm due for some new drives ... I'm nearly out of space.

    Thx Scott. If you move the L4 catalogue to an external drive doesn’t this mean that processing rendition is slowed down. In some of the L4 coffee breaks Vanelli says to keep the catalogue on your fastest drive, which in most cases is the hard drive of your computer.

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Edward ... that's a consideration. I think it partially depends on what kind of external drive you're using. A fast, external SSD is ... well ... fast. It's a potential trade off between mobility and speed. Personally, I choose the flexibility of moving between machines (which is important to my workflow). And I haven't noticed a particular slowdown with my catalog "outside" my computer.
      Of course, you can always move the catalog temporarily when you need to be on-the-go, then move it back later.

      Just want to know what brand of external hd you are using? My workflow also is switch between the iMac and MacBook. Thanks.

  • @andrewng8128

    Scott, I keep my RAW files on two external drives, one working drive and the other as a backup is just a exact duplicate of RAW files. On the working drive that Iis where I use luminar edits and this is where the Catalog points to. If this main drive fails, how can I make luminar now points to the exact files in my backup drive without losing any of the edits?

    • @ScottDavenport
      @ScottDavenport  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andrew ... you should *test* this in a controlled manner. Have backups of your catalog and photos first. Luminar's catalog system is not very forgiving of mistakes.
      I am assuming the identical folder structure and photo names are on the backup drive. If your main drive is offline/failed, when you start Luminar, the folders in the catalog will be grayed out. There is a "Locate" option to reconnect the folder. If you point that at your backup drive, Luminar should find all the photos again and re-associate the edits with them.
      Again ... *test* this is a controlled manner. This is the kind of stuff you don't want to be figuring out once you're in a disaster recovery situation :)
      I have an older video (Luminar 3) that shows the operation. www.scottdavenportphoto.com/blog/how-to-move-a-master-folder-in-luminar

      @@ScottDavenport Hey Scott. Just tested this and it works exactly like what you said. I just need to keep both drives identical and it will work. Many thanks. In fact, I will also backup both copies of the catalog in each drive so that I can restore it when needed. These catalog files grows so large that I may need to keep multiple catalogues, perhaps by year or by location. Great videos. Love it.
