  • #farm #howto #Calfhaltertrainig #calf #TexasPrepper2 #Wranglerstar #training #begin #HowtoBeginCalfHalterTraining #farming #halter #cow We have a Dexter heifer that we are weaning and halter training at the same time. She's a cutie and although Dexter's have always been small, one of the smallest breeds in America, if not the smallest, today they are called mini's. Really are the ORIGINALS and are the ancestors of modern Angus beef cows. Dexter Cattle are truly a triple threat as they were used for milk, meat, and as oxen. Few breeds have had such distinction. Today they are finding a new place as they are increasing becoming the choice of small farms because you can them on less than an acre in wet climates. We haven't named her yet but I'm sure one will come soon enough. Daniel

    I’ve been showing cattle for about 7 years and I’m always learning new things, and new methods to do old things, and this is definitely one of those times, thank you sir!

    In the UK we have to ear tag calves for identification well before 6 months.

    I like the gentle way you're handling her. I was pretty successful with a calf starting him off with a bucket of feed, stroking his back and scratching his tail-head till he didn't mind me touching him at all. Slipped a halter (without lead) on... and then after a few days of the same routine clipped the lead on and he's not really fighting it at all. Next step is to tie to post... how long do you leave them tied up?

      Dan Benavidez it varies but usually it's a couple of hours but the purpose is that I bring them food and I bring them water.

      Awesome!! All it takes is time. We spend tons of time with our animals. Like anything with perseverance, hard work, and the Lord anything is possible.

    Can I ask why do you need to train them like this

    • @AllenBrothersChannel
      @AllenBrothersChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes of course, We do it because we hand raise all of our animals. Some are trained to be draft animals, others milk cows, ect.... We try to keep all of our animals as tame as they can be. Makes it much easier to handle them. We are a homestead so all animals are with us everyday!

    At what age should you start halter training the calf?

    • @AllenBrothersChannel
      @AllenBrothersChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very young. For best results you need to raise it and train it yourself as a calf. You must spend MANY hours with it. I have seen people do it when they are older but its very very hard.

      hey!!!!! The calf yes!!!! Absolutely! If you are referring to the mother its normally really hard to halter train then once they are older. However, I have seen it done.

      AntimatterGirl Dexter cows are a smaller breed of cattle.

    • @AllenBrothersChannel
      @AllenBrothersChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dexter's came with Europeans to North America and are a very old breed of cattle often called Irish Dexters. They are smaller than many breeds but are durable and triple purposed on farms for work as small oxen, for milk, and the steers for meat. The meat is similar to Black Angus according to some which is highly sought after here in the United States. They are great foragers as well and can make use of a lot of scrub. This particular heifer calf was a cross with lowline black angus and even smaller than her mother who is a full blood Dexter. We start the halter training young because it is best for both us and the calf in regard to milking.

      AllenBrothers I own cows too, but just simental, hf, polska biało-czarna, jersey and now limousine (sorry, I don't know english names). and their calves are much bigger in that age :)

    • @AllenBrothersChannel
      @AllenBrothersChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Simmental, Jersey, and Limousine are are know here. However, the Polska bialo-czarna is not or at least I have never heard of it. I did look at a picture and it looks very hardy. Each of the breeds you mentioned are very good breeds.

    She would take this easier if you started her younger.

    • @AllenBrothersChannel
      @AllenBrothersChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's correct. The earlier you start them the better. In South America where I saw calves begin halter training to eventually work in a yoke they would bottle feed them to tame them as well. In this case she came to us almost 6 months old. I have halter broke two Texas longhorns that were over a year old each when they started. When they get that old it the halter training form of bronc busting....lol. Daniel

    • @AllenBrothersChannel
      @AllenBrothersChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe she was a few months in this video. This cow is already older now and has just given us a calf this year! We start them very very young.

    Cruel. Pulling the baby hard the ropes probably hurting when you pull her like a rag doll.

      Angelxobeauty If you cant say anything productive dont say anything at all please.. I dont mean to be rude but this is far from hurting that animal. They have to be trained just like any other animal so that people can work with them. Its no different than training a dog to not crap in the floor..

      This little heifer was in no pain at all. If she was in pain she would be bellowing but of course she wasn't. We tend our cows daily to make the training as effective as possible and to lessen the stress. Part of the training process is to place the heifer in a stall so that they can't run all over the place. Also, she is quit used to being in the stall so it isn't a place that she is unaware of. The little heifer is in training to be a milk cow so she needs to be trained in preparation for this life. This protects both the heifer and the people who work with her. Training a calf to lead with a halter is similar to training a dog to walk on a leash and most cities have leash laws to protect the dog, and to protect people, as well as other pets from harm, as much as is possible. I am curious, do you feel that training a dog to a leash is also cruel? And if leash training and halter training is cruelty then what would you suggest we do with the animals that we have as pets and also those we work with? AllenBrothers
