When you tie the calf up you should have your kids tale turns sitting with her with a hand on the rope. This will make the calf believe that the kids are strong enough to stop her and will lead to the kids being able to walk her. If you add a verbal command to the actions you ask her to do while haltered then eventually you will be able to use just your voice to get her to do things. I did 5 years of dairy 4-h showing and me and my friends always trained our calves with verbal commands while halter training and so we could control them out in the pasture without even touching them.
What kind of words did you use at commands? I’m getting my first calf through ffa to show ( I typically do hogs) and I’m learning first about halter training before I get my calf.
Oh this video has come in perfect time for us! We just got our first calf today!! Thank you for the great tips. We have some work to do with our little one.
Maybe offer to sell her to the Hollar Family Homestead for their first milk cow. That way, you'll know for sure that she'll have a good life!!! Pretty Cow.
Your sweet Grace reminds me of my older sister. She had long hair at that age, and absolutely loved all different types of animals. Even though we did not grow up on a farm, we always had animals. Fifty plus years later, she is a police Lt. in our home town, and still loves animals. She loves coming to the farm and helping the farmer and me take care of all the animals we have been blessed to take care of. And she has plenty of her own too. I can just see Grace having animals around her always. Blessings from our farm to yours.
Headstall and tether training is best done as young as possible, I agree. Get them into the idea they can't get away from the tether long before they are strong enough that they might break the rope. I tethered my Dexter heifer as soon as she was old enough to be away from her mama for a few hours, and she never gave any trouble.
When I was your daughters age I showed my Holstein calf at the fair.I Worked on training all summer. The fair was in August so I had plenty of time.I entered a grooming class and won it.I brushed that calf everyday.Get a grooming brush for horses and brush her out.She will love it and calm down.Your kids will have fun too.Pretty calf!Oh yes Maybe give the calf a bath since it is hot.
I love all your videos! Sometimes I feel like I'm right there on your homestead with y'all. I really like Brighton's haircut, looks so much cooler in your hot weather. And Joyful's haircut is cute too. So cute watching Wilder in the garden. Grace is growing up to be a lovely young lady. And Justice is a good little helper. All of your children are such a blessing for y'all! God bless your family!
Glad you know to stop and smell the roses, even the rocks cry out. Glad you're taming Dandy. Glad Beefsteak faced down the possum. That must have been something to see. Looks like rain. Hundred degrees and humid here. Chance of rain
Touching is great for circulation, keeping them relaxed and happy, which makes all their products taste better. If you are coming to Santa Rosa this year, I recommend trying products from Cowgirl Creamery.
Oh my gosh, cuteness overload. We also have a little calf that we will be trying to halter train. Ours is only 4 weeks old, still trying to build trust with her. Thanks for sharing guys 💚💚💚
Have you thought of using a curry comb on the calf as well? It would probably enjoy the light scritches too! But would also get her used to finding pleasure being touched in many more areas more thoroughly.
She is so sweet. I would much rather purchase a gentled, halter broke cow for a homestead. It is so worth the time and effort. Socializing her around kids and animals is a plus too.
I love your Rose of Sharon bush, and mine used to get visits from hummingbirds too. Do you have hummingbird moths too? I usually don't see them till end of July or August. My old house l would see them all summer long, because my whole yard was filled with flowers.💮🌼🌻🏵🌸🌺🌺🌷🌷🌹💐🌹🌷🌷🌺🌺🌸🏵🌻🌻🌼🌼💮💮💮🌼🌼🌻🏵🏵🌸🌸🌺🌺🌷🌷🌹🌹🌹💐🌷🌷🌺🌸🌸🏵🏵🌻🌻🌼💮💮🌼🌻
Oh! Is that a Rose of Sharon? I have one but it is still small. I cannot wait for it to get taller. I am curious about cow milk. Is it better for children who get stopped up easily due to dairy?
Erin McCormick goat milk is better for allergies, its a little closer to human breast milk. There’s a woman in Arizona, weed Em and reap, who started using goats milk for her son’s asthma
Great way to train a calf. Always tie them to a fence or tree. She is looking Beautiful. Cows are funny when they face off other animals, We see it all the time here in Montana. I think it's funny. Have a Blessed day guys. Stay dry! lol
I would seriously suggest you think about keeping both calves for milk cows... Because of the bad weather that parts of the mid-west and east has had, there are already signs going up in stores of food shortages... people are going to need milk. It would be a good opportunity for you to sell locally. I'm a firm believer that hard times are coming ahead because of solar minimum, crazy weather ect
Melissa Jarvis it’s a Rose of Sharon bush and you can get seeds from one after the blooms have dried and dropped off . The seeds are in a dried pod like thing where the bloom was.
Nice job with your calf Art. She will make somebody a wonderful milk cow. Maybe the Hollars would be interested. Bri, your Rose of Sharon is beautiful. I have several in pink and burgundy, white and pink, cream and orangy red. They have bloomed well but not nearly as full as yours. Do you prune them back at all.? I have not done that and I think maybe I should. Have a Blessed day.
@@ardenpeters4386 yes, I love these bushes because they bloom all summer, require very little attention and they propagate themselves. When you see a new little bush coming up, if it is not where you want one just dig it up and move it.. When I lived in Texas I had a multi petal one that almost looked like a carnation. It was beautiful.
My heifer is 1 month old. Bottle fed. What age should I start doing this? Or do I need to? My steers are 6 months now (bottle fed), and I can pet them, but I'm just rotational grazing them. I won't need to milk them ;)
The flowering bush you showed the beginning was a Rose of Sharon you know you could eat those you put them in salads there was sweet taste I put them in salad for my grandchildren we beat them
she's a very pretty girl. My girl has been really good on the halter. I take her down the road to her summer date and she walks with me on her lead. She's like a big dog. I always have my geese loose with the goats. Just last week a coyote got our rooster and then four days later they got one of my geese. Our other one was pretty sad about it. I got them together as day olds. Now he is locked up at night with his new flock of pullets and that makes him happy.
How old is Miss Dandy? Im curious cause I have a one & 1/2 month old dairy/angus calf that needs halter broke and I am wondering if this is too young or should I get started now?
Hi Art snd Bri and kids I like to know if you been thinking of raiseing meat chickens or trukeys ????? and You have more milk and butter and you have buy it from store with 2 cows there pretty breed of milk cow
My cow started hitting me her head sometimes..I don't know why she does so.can anyone help me teach me something that will help me to solve this problem?
Details are important. Cows are simple. Put a rope halter with the eye-loop, where the rope gathers the slack, on the same side, the side you're gonna walk on--every time. Don't make them have to have it across their nose. So simple, you'd think is doesn't make any difference, but wear a halter for a few minutes or hours and see.

We have had good luck with tying the rope so it won't slip off and let the rope drag, when they step on it they learn to give to the rope.

Hey you guys, i saw you.
Maybe offer to sell her to the Hollar Family Homestead for their first milk cow. That way, you'll know for sure that she'll have a good life!!! Pretty Cow.
Great idea!😃👍
I really like that idea!
That's a great idea!
That's an awesome idea right there!

Love the fireman's hat Brighten!😊
My son used to wear it backwards like he's doing. :)
Very neat how they adapt so quickly.
Great job Art.
Jo Jo in VT
Wish we had though about that when we were kids. We would push and pull on them. Would tie the horses but never thought doing the calves. Great tip.
She is so pretty and you're doing such a great job with her.

I had friends in school that did 4H.
Some were dairyman, some raised steer.
Either way it was not unusual to halter the calf at a few days old.
That calf is so pretty!
Beautiful brown swiss
Dandy is a beautiful calf. I'm glad to see your taming her.

Hi Art and Bri, what are the butterflies in the intro ? They are beautiful. Thanks
The butterfly is a Swallowtail. Specifically, I believe that it is a Spice Bush Swallowtail. The larvae of this butterfly feed on the Spice bush.
There are 3 black Swallowtails native to this NC: Eastern Black, Spicebush, and Pipevine (no tails).
Does anyone know what that beautiful bush is? (That the butterflies are on.)
Melissa Jarvis it’s a Rose of Sharon bush and you can get seeds from one after the blooms have dried and dropped off . The seeds are in a dried pod like thing where the bloom was.
@@melissajarvis4829 It is Hibiscus or commonly called Rose of Sharon. (I was a librarian for 42 years and love to do research)
Beautiful!

Awesome highlight :)
Our goat show is ...entries must be placed by 10 pm Friday Sept 13....i think you have some beautiful winners.
What should you do when the calf lowers her head at you and she’s tied up
There’s that beautiful Rose of Sharon bush in your intro! Your calf has a beautiful face with the most gorgeous eyes.
Something learned is something earned..... awesome that the halter training is going well... shes a beautiful lady....
Have a wonderful evening...

How many acres do you have available for your cows?

How do you fold the halter

Get started now, angus can be very hard headed.
How old is your milk cow? That heifer is still a couple of years away from making milk.
Hi Art snd Bri and kids

What kind of bush is that?
I think you have that calf nearly to the point where your beautiful young assistant can take over.
What age should I start?
*GOOD MORNING FAMILY CONGRATULATIONS VÍDEO*
You should so keep her but I am so interested in her. She is very cute. And would love to offer you something for her.

Don't leave the calve by its self otherwise it could strangle itself
