STEP BY STEP GUIDE
How to bulk delete emails in Gmail before a specific date
STEP 1
If I click into the Gmail search bar, I’ll use the search keyword ‘before’ to ask Gmall to look at emails before a particular date.
I need to ensure I follow that keyword with a colon to make sure it works
STEP 2
And then I’ll add the date I want to search earlier than - in this case I’ll look for emails before the 1st June 2021.
It’s important to remember that when entering a date in Gmail it is more common to use a US format date - with this format you enter the month first followed by the day of the month and lastly you add the year. Remember that you need to add the full four digits for the year for it to work correctly.
STEP 3
If I press the return key with that search entered, you’ll see that all the emails entered before the 1st June are shown
STEP 4
To delete all those emails before that date, I’ll begin by choosing the checkbox at the top left of the inbox.
This select all the emails on this first page of the Gmail inbox
However it does not select all the emails that were returned in your search.
STEP 5
To select all the emails, you need to move your mouse to the ‘Select all conversations’ link at the top of the inbox
If I click that now, Gmail confirms that all conversations in the search have now been selected.
STEP 6
Let’s now move to the delete icon at the top of the inbox, and I’ll click that once.
A prompt then appears that confirms that your delete request will carry out a bulk action on a large number of emails.
To proceed with this, click the large blue OK button.
STEP 7
Gmail will then work through the emails and delete them.
Depending on how many emails you have in your inbox, this may take a little while.
Once that is complete, Gmail confirms that All conversations have been moved to the Bin or Trash folder.

@@woggleguides I can’t tell you how frustrated I am having not looked for this sooner!!! 😭 I am now managing my 76 year old Moms email… needless to say it has never had an email deleted since the invention of GMAIL!!!!

How to delete all gmails
Hello, Can you please tell me how I can remove emails from a designated label preceding a certain date? For example: under a Label called: Automotive Related I would like to delete all emails prior to 2022/01/01. Is there a way I can use a filter to accomplish this? Many thanks in advance!
I managed to do this for the "promotions" label using the search "label:promotions" and then further filter with before a certain date

these are not bulk delete only lets me delete 60 mails at a time
What if I have saved emails in folders I’ve created? Will those be deleted if they fall under the dates I’ve selected to be deleted? Or is there a way to only delete the archived messages?

Hi Jason - to remove multiple emails make sure the categories sections are not active in your inbox - these are the promotions, socials etc email tabs across the top. can you select unread emails from a certain date?
Hi Steve - yes you can! If you click into the search bar at the top of Gmail (and lets say you want to find all unread emails from last December) you can do this by typing in the keywords "is:unread" followed by "after:2021/12/01 before:2021/12/31". Leave out the quotation marks (") in the search and that should work. Hope that helps.

This does not work. I follow your instructions, hit search, and get message "No messages match your search." I've tried repeatedly. any suggestions as to why this doesn't work? Might it work better in chrome or safari or firefox ?
It shouldn't make any difference which browser you use to be honest. The problem is most likely to lie with the search query - if you can paste what you are using, I can take a look at it if it helps.
