I've been using these type of stoves for a good many years now. The best thing about butane is it burns hotter than propane so you coffee water heats up super quick. The only draw back that I have experienced except for the size/weight issue is the lack of a wind screen which is easy to rig up using the case in an emergency. The first time I saw them in use was in buffet restaurants where the chefs at the omelet section were cooking your breakfast to order. So they are somewhat safe to use indoors as long as you have adequate ventilation. Those of you used to cooking on a gas stove will find these a joy to cook on. Instant heat. Thanks

I haven't read the comments yet, but BEWARE of storing your fuel tins in the car/boot/sun, they could explode if over 50 degrees C. Also only use saucepans & pots that do not over-lap the canister side of the stove. It is best to keep the gas canister on the side the wind is coming from when cooking. I got a dual butane/propane stove very similar to this one. Love it for the versatility to use butane and propane. I highly recommend you add one of these or a dual one to your survival kit. The dual unit is only about 10 to 15$ more. Thanks for the excellent video.
Very good kit! The stove is only 23 dollars here in Canada. Is a must for where we live as it's isolated and if the power goes out because of winter storms or high winds then at least a person can cook some food.
i got one to have in house, during a power outage, combined with the bbq, its a great back up, not so much bug out bag, or backpacking, but great for camping too, nice review

This made me laugh my ass off, no disrespect, love the vid. It's just that around my area, people use this stove as a hotpot stove, nothing but hotpot. My scout troop used to bring that thing winter camping just to hotpot, brings back nice memories. Though I use it often, never thought of using it for survival purposes, thanks for the idea! Gotta start stacking up on those canisters.
Food for thought...some come with a color coating like paint or powder coated. When they get hot the coating off gasses and can smell up a small area. I had one in bare metal, they dont seem to have problems with odors as much.
Great video. Try to get replacement cans with "CRV" on label as these don't explode. Also wise to use in a vented space as it produces Carbon monoxide..
A nice one for Tenting/car picnics/.....Gas One GS-800P a 7,120btu, it's light weight, small, and runs butane & 1lb propane tanks. For RVing and at home I like the Gas One GS-4000p, 12,000btu but alot more expensive, butane & propane. Both are great for camping, but I do not suggest them for hiking. They are more of a base camp type, to bulky to carry.
I believe I've been seeing these at Walmart in my area. They also have the primus classic trail if you want something more pack able... But more tippy. $19.99.

Some come with adapters that lets you run propane also. Pretty sure you can find an adapter online or in Walmart. The Coleman brand of this stove comes with one.

I've never used one of these stoves before so forgive the newbie question, but can you take the gas canister back out easily when it's still got gas in it or do you have to leave it in until it's empty? I only have experience with CO2 cylinders...

The town i live in used to be a pure Czech town 15yrs ago now its 3/4 Hispanics. Most stores here are run by em n speak nothin but spanish. I've been avoiding those stores... maybe i should have a look.
i go to the local thrift store for clothes, pans, pots, canteens, boots, shoes, knives etc. i dont see the need spending $100s on gear that you can find at a thrift store that was hardly or never used for a few bucks.
like shirts for an example i wear a 3XLT or a 4XL its hard to find my size in this "small" town. Walmart doesn't even have my size. Orschelns, Tractor Supply are great places but its $20-50 a shirt. now i go to the Thrift Shop and i get get brand new shirts my size for next to nothing. I can fill a large paper sack full of clothes and get it for $3.
I need to find a store like that around here. Our thrift stores are mostly full of junk. I keep hoping for some good gear but so far it ain't happening.

These are very widely used in Asia and are almost always found in the Asian Grocery stores. Many restaurants in Chinatown even use them for certain dishes. They use them inside, not that I am willing to take on the liability for recommending that. But it is done all the time, (hopefully with good ventilation). Fuel is sometimes as cheap as a buck a can, stoves $12 in the Asian grocery stores.

Got the Coleman version at my local Walmart for $20! Good little stove. If I can get a name brand for the same money that's what I'll go with. But that's just me.
These type of butane canister and stove were developed by Japanese company named Iwatani, around 40-50 years ago. They are widely copied and used in Far East and South East Asian countries for a long time. You can still by Iwatani versions, which are more expensive than Chinese knockoffs.

beahaven I haven't. I'm not sure about any issues with butane combustion vs natural gas or propane, but I had propane at my last house and we used that cooktop for 10 years. Having said that, I can't recommend it because I don't know and I certainly don't want anything bad to happen because of something I said.
I think thee Pocket Rocket is a great stove. I like this one for an emergency use for several reasons. 1- it is very stable and won't tip over, so you don't have to be as careful about that 2- you can use standard household cookware ore easily. 3- it has an electric start, so that's one less thing to think about. Having said all that, this is definitely not the best big out option due to it's size and weight. But for a "bug in" situation, or just plain old camping, I think it is a good option. @@SurvivalOnPurpose - Yeah, there is a 0.98 cent store in my little town of Phelan. It's a really small place. Owner operator. He always has a stack of 4 or 5 with the butane cannisters on the shelf next to it. The store is a 0.98 cent store but he sells them for about 5.00 each.
I guess because they sell well there.The first time I saw the stove was on a construction site and some guys were using it to cook their lunch. I asked them where they got it and they told me at a store that caters to primarily Hispanic people.

The stove doesn't always produce Carbon Monoxide.
In a normal, oxygen rich atmosphere, it produces Carbon Dioxide, like any gas stove.

Great shoestring stove, one thing if its freezing outside dont leave the fuel out it freeze and wont work . only drawback of those stove or heather.

over here in the U K quite a few of the TV chefs use these for outdoor cooking segments quite often with pretty large pans

You can take the gas cartridge out and it will seal so you can re-use it.

You can use it indoors with good ventilation. Lots of RVers use them.

Butane is $2.97 a canister now, however, the small bottles of propane are almost $8.00 at Walmart. Get prepared and wake the hell up!

Survival On Purpose at full power its should last about an hour and a half.
these stoves (running on full) use around 150 grams per hour, so you're looking at ~ 1.5 hours per cartridge, when running full on.

Butane stoves won't work when it gets below freezing, but that's due to the butane, not the stove.
