Zuko never had a redemption arc because he was never a villain he was a protagonist who had an arc about realizing the error in his thought process. Fighting for or along side villains doesn't make him a villain its his motives, morals, and his behavior that make him a villain. Unlike his sister Zuko was never shown to enjoy what his family does he only does it because it was expected of him.

yeah everyone can say “we all grieve differently” but the thing is there was no grief at all in this show. if anything cole was grieving football and and alex his last gf way more than jackie did for her entire dead family. she was just sad for a couple of secs here and there
edit: i don’t know how this was handled in the book as i haven’t read it but in the show the death of her family was nothing more than a plot device to send her into a house full of pretty boys. her character was extremely underdeveloped even though she had the most foundation. instead they focused on the problems and inner turmoil of the attractive guys bc the target audience was teen girls and they thought it would be more interesting and captivating for them to watch a show abt “troubled guys who needed this very special girl to be happy”. yes jackie does seem to be the type to make herself busy instead of dealing with her pain and instead fixate on other people but it still felt like the show didn’t care much about het bc because her inner conflicts always felt cheap compared to everyone else’s. she can be the avoidant type and the show can still show us how much she’s hurting and make it meaningful. instead they threw a couple moments of her being unwell bc it’s what makes sense not because she was treated like an important character (even though she is the main one)

Im so sad you didn't mention the scene where after Cole dropped the box on Jackies floor, he and Will go out to bring more boxes in and Will tells Cole to be nicer to her, and Cole says something like "shes got to learn to deal with rough and tumble, things are different here" AFTER HER FAMILY JUST DIED?!?! i had to pause the show because I was so astounded

The problem isn't stupid teenagers. It's writing the most dull, one dimensional young characters ever with typical issues. It's brushing off cheating as a plot device like it's nothing
I think them writing that Jackie’s flying to NYC to live with her uncle is a way to force Cole to admit the cheating and try to make him be direct with Alex & for Jackie to admit she doesn’t love him. So it will force them to be accountable if they go down that path for the 2nd season. Will have to wait and see.
It's stupid teenage girls writing these stories online for other stupid teenage girls like them to read. What makes no sense is the show biz buying the rights to turn them into TV shows and movies
Personally I liked the writing, the dialogue is cheezy and the acting is meh. It's the writing that act held this together in my opinion.

I mean shock, probably. Everyone deals with grief differently. For some people it’s very internal. And like I said, it may be shock. The grief might suddenly hit her years down the line.

remember the show takes place 6 months after the accident...the average person isn't constantly shaking crying and throwing up after all that time, despite the amount of emotional pain they're still in.

E.g. go to the party etc. ( I haven't watched the show but I'm assuming bad boy bro makes her go saying she should loosen up a little or sum)

he has a cochlear implant so he can hear alright when there’s not a lot of background noise - the actor is also hard of hearing so I think it’s pretty accurate to real life
This is crazy how they said it in the first episode, then I completly forgot about it (there were too many new characters to remember) so by the time that scene came where Jordan was banging on the table to get Will's attention I was so confused and thought it was just to show that Will is distracted. and it isn't until I read this comment that I realized

To be fair the brother made his relationship go back to square one. Bro cheats with his brothers girlfriend just shows his character. Yes, it's her who cheated but he slept with his brother's girlfriend. That's his consequence. And I'm someone who usually puts responisibility on just he cheater. It's never made sense to me why people get made at the mistress because she's pressumably not married or in a relationship she didn't make a vow or promise. But, the cheater did so they are the guilty ones. However, in this situation the brother has guilt and should face consequences because it wasn't just a random girl who was dating someone else. She was dating his brother, even if it's his friend that's a scumy thing to do. Cole is a massive dick and doesn't deserve a relationship with his brother. Scumy person be scumy.

You can tell this was written by a teenager who hasn't lost their parents bc an adult would have known that Jackie would have felt so much grief and guilt FOR YEARS the last thing on her mind would have been boys.
She would be depressed, she would probably barely talk or eat in the beginning. She would be tired and try to sleep, but she baerly can, and when she wakes up she would have a moment if clarity before remembering everything and it all coming crashing back down. There would be days where she is better, just to have a couple of really bad days again bc grief isn't just uphill.
She is only 15, she would need extensive therapy for just being a teenager again.

I cannot get past how the boys are supposed to become her family, not her crush. In any other show she’d get closer and see them as brothers not somebody she could date. Especially if this is the first time she’s meeting them.
They’re not her family, the mom was assigned to be her guardian in her will. They’re supposed to look out for her and make her feel welcome, but she makes it clear in the barn early on (I think episode 2 or 3) that they’re not her family. It’s part of the reason she didn’t want to celebrate Thanksgiving and what she tells Cole during the argument at the dinner for his mom.
I thought the same thing it just seems very weird especially for someone as young as her to consider these guys as potential boyfriends idk it just seems weird to me

I disagree. She's living with them, and the parents are her new guardians, but there's no reason she should automatically consider these dudes she just met to be her brothers. I still cannot believe the ending; it was so out of character for Jackie to cheat on Alex. She’s supposed to be the logical one and know that doing that is dumb. I know her family died, but she seemed mostly past it since it was established to have been a few months since the show started when school began and ended when school got out. If they made her kiss Cole earlier it could have worked since we would’ve had some time to soak it in, but it just assassinates Jackie’s character for more people to tune into season 2.

She's been flirting with Cole all season and it was clear she liked him, yet shit kept ignoring it and got with Alex even though it was clear she liked Cole. Everything she did all season was toxic and annoying. It was 100% on point with how she was acting all season acting like she didn't like Cole, yet staring into his eyes, or staring at him across the room and taking his side every time something happen between Cole and Alex.

Of course she liked Cole but for the most part she stood on good morals and kept denying his pursuit until the very end. She condemn Paige for cheating and Erin for accepting Cole’s behavior. I believe she always liked cole but knew he wasn’t a good guy for her. But because she’s super vulnerable and emotionally unstable she lost focus on what truly makes her happy and Cole could relate to that part of her and that’s what made her cheat. That’s what I meant when I said it didn’t fit who she was. She really cared about Alex but got distracted by Cole’s ability to seduce her. She really was trying to fight against it. But she finally gave in

So even though she might have condemned Paige for cheating and acted like she had some kind of mortal high ground against Erin (She didn't). She didn't seem to have a problem with Cole cheating on people and would protect him and let him keep hurting Erin all season and other women all season. So it shows that her morals were always grey when it came to Cole.

She was also not trying to burn bridges with anyone in the house including Cole. I’m not justifying her flirting with Cole or cheating because she was crossing the line when she did. But she was morally in check until the last episode. It was the cheating that made her toxic and she didn’t seem like the type that would cheat. If anything I thought she would break up with Alex first and keep some sort of self respect. But it was obvious she was down spiraling and probably at the lowest point of her life and just wanted to make the people around her happy. She was smart, considerate and kind in the beginning and call Cole out on his crap every chance she got. She stood up for her self and was goal oriented. She kept her guards up with Cole and stood on good principles the entire show until the very end. And cheating just did not fit her character throughout the show

The scene when the Walters started arguing with him about how he shouldn't be her guardian was WILD.
The scene when the uncle explains that he understood why he wasn’t assigned to be her guardian because the will was drafted when the mom was in college and he wasn’t mature made sense to me. He admitted he wasn’t responsible back then, and the Will was probably an afterthought for Jackie’s parents. At least 10 years had passed since it was written… he could fight the will if he wanted to, but instead he asked Jackie what she wanted so that was kind of him

can you even 'will' a child to be raised by a random person? most certainly remaining blood relatives would still be preferred by law.

There was one occasion when the older brother was away and came back to some summer party and hooked up with a ho but he didn't know she was dating his brother.
So SHE was at fault, but Cole is still a difficult, troubled bad boy and his brother lives in his shadow.
However, Cole is also jealous of his little brother's good nature, good behaviour and dependability.
I'm telling you, the whole thing is crap but the 2 brothers are more interesting than the bland chick in the middle 😄

Cole demonstrates one of the biggest issues I have with these sorts of shows/movies. He’s presented as this guy who just doesn’t care, but let me tell you, no one gets a body like that by not caring. He cares a lot.

I never met any of my parents’ childhood or college friends. It’s moderately realistic to me at least that a parent’s friend that lived across the country would be a total stranger to the parent’s child.
Maybe if you set it up that this person would parent in case of tragedy, you should probably introduce them at some point but even then, that’s such a unpredictable edge case it may not be worth traveling to Nowhere, Colorado to handle.

I watched like the first 2 episodes and it just bothered me so much how they were so mean to her after her parents just frickin died
It’s messed up how rude they were in the beginning, and the only reason Alex seems to be nice is because he liked her. I hate that characters only get treated kindly if someone else wants to date them - can’t just be friendly… and it made me wonder if the other reason Alex liked her was because Cole showed interest once he realized that Alex was getting attention from Jackie.

Then she cheated on him with his brother, my other uncle. Those two got married eventually and were married for over 20 years, but now she has divorced him too. It's a messy situation

One thing I never understood about this show is that the dead moms friend is now the legal guardian of Jackie, which means the boys are now her step brothers. So the whole show is just a girl flip flopping between dating her family

Giving the two guys in the love triangle a pre-existing dynamic makes sense, but making them brothers... it's pretty awkward. It's already awkward in Vampire Diaries, and those guys are immortal vampires. You don't have to worry about making peace at family Thanksgiving.
I agree with the part where they dont portray the loss properly! I once read a book ( on Dublin road by Samantha Young) with a similar plot. The main heroine lost her whole family in a car accident when she was like fourteen or fifteen and she had to move to Scotland from Virginia to be with her relatives. She isolated herself for years, had serve panic attacks, and was also troubled when she found out she was expecting after she got married because she was afraid to loose a baby she loved so much just like her family. I think they could have done a better job at that.

I'm getting flashbacks to The Fosters Show. I use to like that show but the relationship drama eventually made me stop caring about the characters.
The show also made me realize why I could never finish any show in the drama genre because with most of these shows they don't have a villain and the conflicts are caused by characters making mistakes and eventually when characters keep making mistakes and not learning from them I just don't care anymore.
