    I can't believe how much easier centering the bead in the deepest part of the rim makes! Lots of videos with tips on mounting stubborn tires, but yours was the only one that helped me get that tire mounted! Thank you!

    The tip about moving the bead closer to the center of the rim is pure gold and has just saved my ass. Thanks a lot.

      Your welcome. Some suggest to start installation away from the valve, ending at the valve, to allowing more tire bead to center in the wheel grove. When installing in this manner, be very careful of not to damage the valve. Regards, Tony

    This video absolutely saved me and my friend yesterday. After struggling to get her tire back on while on the trail for 30 minutes yesterday I found your video and was relieved to find some tips that didn't require any special gear that we didn't have. After watching, I was filled with the confidence and knowledge I needed to pop those last few inches into the rim of the wheel - truly, thank you! Tony you were the real MVP of our ride yesterday 👑

    Thank you so much for this clear and effective counsel. Moving the bead to the center of the rim, aggressively, all the way around, did the job, the tube and tire are now installed, and I expect my blood pressure is better, too! :) Thanks be to God for Tony Marchand!

    After a lot of problems with installing 700x25 Gatorskins I found that the The Kool Tire Bead jack works pretty well, but there's another problem. When you pry the bead on, the part of the bead opposite begins to pop out. You can chase that space clear around the tire.
    What worked for me was to use a CABLE TIE to grip around the tire where it pops out, so it doesn't pop out again. I've seen a wire wrap used to this purpose. The tight tie is not-removable, so you have to cut it off when you're done. I've keep a single edge razor blade in my tire kit along with the tire levers.

      I just had exact problem with Gatorskin 700c X 23, I used boot laces to trap the tire from peeling off the opposite side, now am scared of getting a puncture whilst out, and not being able to get tyre back on, it was hugely difficult and snapped three plastic tyre levers, are these tyres cut slightly too small or something? so many people seem to be having problems with them. Am not a novice by any means, came close to taking them back, but had already taken the labels and whatnot off.

      I have arthritis in my hands and I have the Crankbrothers speed lever but its really still hard to get the tire back on after fixing a flat. At home I aimed a torch lighter flame at the last part that wouldn't go in and it finally went on. So now I will carry a small torch lighter (e.g. for candles, bbq) with me.

    Thanks for the video. I also found that pushing the valve partially back through the rim will allow the tire bead to sit down further into the rim. This can provide just a tiny bit more to pull around to the other side of the rim.

    Well I'm happy to say this method worked. I put the tire on without a fight in a couple of minutes. And to prove it wasn't a fluke, I went ahead and mounted my tire in the wrong direction (arrrgghhh 😣) just so I could take it off and re-mount it in the right direction. The 2nd mount went just like the first one. Had it on in a couple of minutes without much struggle at all. So thank you Tony for making my life easier and I am now a subscriber. 👍

    The bit between 6 mins and 7 mins is the part that really effs me off when changing a tyre (on top of idiots breaking glass bottles on the areas of the street where bicycles are supposed to ride!)

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only change to the video I've made is that one starts away from the valve in placing the bead on the rim. This is because the valve is fixed in place and the rest of the tire is more likely to slip into the grove in the middle of the rim. Move around until there's a small amount of bead left to either the right or left of the bead (so you won't damage the valve). Now, either by hand or using an accessory (Crank Brothers Speedier Lever or Kool Stop Bead Jack), push the remaining part of the bead over the rim. Also see: th-cam.com/video/ZbO_03rKyPk/w-d-xo.html

      Some suggest starting away from the valve and working your way around each side, shaking the tire beads toward the center to give you more room. Periodically repeat the shaking of the tire bead as you go. This centers the tire in the central groove giving you a little more room and help shake the tube up into the tire (here's where pre-coating the tube with talc or you can use corn starch comes in handy). When you get closer to the valve, let all the remaining air out and push the valve up into the tire out of the way. Use the palms of your hands to push the bead up and over. If you're using a tool such as the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever, come in from one side up to but not past the valve (which can be damaged by the tool). Then come in from the other side and as you get close to the valve the bead should snap on.
      Regards, Tony

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you need to push the bead into the center of the rim where there's a slight grove making the circumference smaller. Periodically shake the tire beads toward the center as you work. Some suggest inserting the bead starting away from the valve and working toward the valve on each side. When you get close to the valve, push the valve up and away. Then complete inserting the bead (you may be able to do this by hand without an additional tube. Seating the bead on tubeless mtb tires can be the real trick. For that, see:

    Good tips - I came here to learn how to handle a difficult road tire while riding, not in the luxury (and warmth) of an indoor shop.
    Thankfully, you approach this issue from that point of view, except for the tip about baby powder. :) I was not aware of the Crank Bros tire lever, which does look like it provides more leverage than a standard tire lever. Have one on order for my bike bag.

    Starting opposite the valve was a gamechanger for me. Thanks!

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it worked for you. This seems to be a controversial point. Some advocate starting opposite to the valve and centering the tire bead in the wheel where there is a slight depression giving you a little more room (smaller circumference) and working your way around toward the valve. As you work your way around, you continue to center the bead periodically, until you reach the last portion of bead near the valve. Then push up on the valve to get the tube and valve up into the tire. Finally, push the rest of the tire bead on by hand. This works with some tire/wheel combinations. But when using an accessory tool such as the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever, I want to be careful not to damage the tube where the valve is attached. That's why in this video I start installation at the valve. If you want to see how to install the tire with the Speedier Lever starting opposite the valve see:
      th-cam.com/video/ZbO_03rKyPk/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TonyMarchand
      Note I finish close to one side of the valve, then move it around so that it come close to, but not over the valve. One can shake the tube and value up into the tire as one goes along (not shown in this video).
      Regards, Tony

    I run a bike shop and have a couple tips to add. I sometimes use baby powder on the tube which allows the tube to move a little easier and I also sometimes will put a little on the tire itself which tends to help sometimes. There is also a great tool made by kool stop called the kool tire bead jack. I bought one on amazon for 12 or so dollars and it is really great at getting difficult tires on. Just need to make sure to use the tool properly so as not to damage the thread casing of tires.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good point. Baby powder is a great help and I should have mentioned it in the video. I personally use it on all new tubes and describe it's use when packing spare tubes. As an aside, starting tube installation at the valve is debatable. It works for me on stiff tires. Some prefer starting installation opposite the valve which is what Jim Langley suggests. I do have a Kool Tire Bead Jack and will compare it to the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever (will make a nice up coming video). Thanks for your comments.

    I just worked on a 700c wheel with a rim that is by design a really tight fit for any tire. it had two layers of standard rim tape installed. After replacing with one thinner high performance high pressure tape, the extra space in the center channel allowed for much easier install.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're using standard rim tape such as Velox, one layer is all you need for clinchers. However, if you're using tubeless tape such as Stan's Tubeless which is very thin to begin with, two layers are required for clinchers since the high pressure in the tube could otherwise cause a blow out at one of the spoke holes. If you had two layers of Velox or similar tape on the clincher wheel, the wheel make didn't know how to build a wheel. If you had tubeless tape, you better put a second layer back on. Can you identify the type of rim tape you have?

      I had one bead already on and was trying to fit the second bead. If you have a difficult time getting the first bead on, before you install the tube, you can carefully use a tire lever to help install the first bead. Then put the tube in and work on the second bead. I mention "careful" so as not to scratch or damage the rim with the tire lever, especially with carbon fiber wheels. Hope that answers your question.

      I'd try the Kool Stop Tire Bead Jack as shown in this video: th-cam.com/video/4oD-mr3dAEw/w-d-xo.html
      The tool is a bit bulky to take with you on a ride in case you get a flat, but it's my last resort. You can also try putting a little bit of soapy water on the last part of the rim where the bead is being pushed over the rim edge. Some tires with some rims are extremely difficult to install. I stick with those tires and rims I can do by hand, especially if I get a flat out on the road. But that's just my preference. Anyway, I hope the above 2 possible solutions will do the trick. Don't forget to put some talc (baby powder) on the tube to allow you to shake the tube up into the tire as you go to prevent pinch flats. When using the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever, I inserting the bead of the tire at the valve and move around to either side. This keep the Speedier Lever from damaging the valve. However, when putting on the tire by hand or any other means, I start away from the valve, insert the tire bead on either side, shake the tire to the center of the rim groove of the rim as I go (gives me a little more room by having less wheel diameter), and finish inserting the tire bead at the valve. Give these a try and let me know how it works out. Regards, Tony

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the most part, start opposite the valve such that you can intermittently shake the tire bead to the center well of the rim (giving you more room). As you work around toward the valve, you can push the valve up into the tire for even more room. I know a few of my videos start at the valve, but I rarely do that now. When using a tool such as the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever, Kool Tire Lever and EZclincher, one must take care as you approach the valve (that's why some start inserting the bead at the valve first with these tools). However, even with use of these tire installation tools, if you start away from the valve and work your way around FROM EITHER SIDE of the valve, as you get close you can get the bead to snap over the rim without the tool passing over the valve where it may cause damage. I hope that brings some clarification to the issue. Let me know if you have other questions. Regards and safe cycling, Tony

    The Kool Tire Bead Jack works well for tight tires. However, the tool is a little bulky to carry if I get a flat. I prefer the Crank Brothers Speedier Tire Lever which is more compact and fits well in my saddle bag. If I can't get the tire back on after a flat by hand or with the Speedier Lever, I should consider a different tire or rim so I don't get stuck out on the road.

    • @pjstock135
      @pjstock135 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always thought that using a lever to reinstall a tyre/tire risked pinching the tube and causing another puncture. Does the Speedier Lever work differently than a regular lever and so does not pinch the tube?

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pjstock135 You are correct about the danger of using tire levers to install tires with tubes. However, the Speedier lever is specially shaped. One end is a regular tire lever to be used to remove the bead of the tire off the rim (I use it in combination with a yellow Pedro's plastic levers) and the other end is specially shaped for bead installation, pushing the tube to the inside while pushing the tire bead up and over the wheel rim without damaging the tube - and works on most but not all tube, tire, rim combinations.
      No matter what the method, it is important to coat the new tube with talc (baby powder) by slightly inflating the tire, sprinkle with talc and coat it by running your hand around the tube. This will help the tube move up and away from the rim. Deflate the tire completely before installing the last part of the bead. After tire installation, inflate the tire slightly and shake the tube up and into the top of the tire, all the way around, looking and making sure that the tube is not pinched under the bead.
      If you can't see the rim tape as you shake the tire and look for pinching of the tube, let a little more air out of the tube.
      Regards, Tony

  • @markfisher7962
    @markfisher7962 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yes, centering the bead in the well of the rim is the key, BUT. Sometimes, there are two things that are working to push that bead out under the hook. A: the residual air in the tube. Actively sucking the air out can help. With TPU tubes, some residual pressure helps avoid pinch punctures, so careful management of the pressure as the bead goes over is needed. B: the natural spring of the casing sometimes actively pushes the bead back under the hook. Laying a heavy cord into the rim beside the seated portion of the bead forces the bead toward the well. Finally, a third problem can be that the tube's valve reinforcement interferes with seating the bead: pressing the valve up into the tire makes sure it's out of the way (you've mentioned this in some replies, but not in the video).

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not tried the heavy cord hack but will give it a try. Removing the air and pressing the valve up into the tire casing are real keys. Also see our later video on tire installation:

    Putting the bead in the center when putting the tire back on! That tip saved my morning! Thanks!

      One of the more important tricks I've learned also. Most now suggest STARTING AWAY FROM THE VALVE AND WORKING YOUR WAY AROUND TOWARD THE VALVE, stopping frequently to shake the bead toward the center. Make sure you let any residual air out of the tire. If you use the Crank Brothers Speedier lever follow these directions:

    I also struggle the most with Continentals on Velocity style rims, especially with my old and weak hands. I had never seen these Crank Bros levers before. I will get some. I never use the nuts as I am afraid they might tear the tube. Any opinion on that? Thanks so much! 👍 ☮️

      If you're referring to the valve nuts, I agree. Throw them away (or use them for Xmas ornaments) - a subject of an up coming video.

    The combination of a new tire and arthritic hands was keeping me from getting the tire back on after a tube installation. I finally put a zip tie around the rim and each portion of the tire that was seated.
    That did the trick. It allowed me to use both hands and get the tire on. Maybe this can help someone else

      Zip ties are a great idea for mounting difficult tires. We show that trick in one of our videos using a pedal strap but a zip tie should work fine:

    Sorry, but right now I'm looking at a new ICAN rim and Conti GP5000's and I have the beads seated as best as possible in the lower channel but it still won't go on.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some tire/rim combinations are really difficult. You might try the EZclincher or the Kool Stop Tire Bead Jack to get the last bit of tire bead on.

    What about the Continental Ultrasport, is it a good tire and not as hard to remove/install as the Gatorskin? I’m looking to replace my tire later this year. I wanted the GP4 or or GP5 but they’re a lot more expensive.

    i have a part of my tire that is hella stubborn to set with the bead and its opposite to the bead (i started on the valve)
    i tried deflating and inflating and deflating again and it wont set

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some tires and rims are very difficult to install and may require the use of Kool Stop Tire Bead Jack (which is a little bulky to carry in your saddle bag). My motto is "if you can't install it by hand (for road bikes) or with the assistance of the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever), consider using a different combination of tire and rim."
      If you're dealing with a tubeless mtb, that's a different story and I'll send you some references.
      Good luck and regards, Tony
