It was a tight screenplay; in the book he meets a lot of other officers and had to assault 3 forts and then take part in a famous charge.
That said, Jack Spears is one of the few veteran officers who likes Sharpe immediately and without being mindful of his title or rank. Even Hogan saw Sharpe as a friendly tool rather than a friend.

@Great Gonzous I know - and Spears redeems himself at the end of this episode. A desperate forlorn charge, kills some Crapauds, plants the flag and fights bravely until he is overwhelmed and killed. His action inspires the troops to storm the fort. Sharpe gives him that chance rather than facing ignoble court martial later on. His death in the book however is far less noble than this.

chris ramm i thought his final scene in the book was excellent. He went out begging, but he did so for the benefit of his sister. From Sharpe’s perspective, it felt so cruel that in a world (away from his chosen men) where he is so alone, that the one who offered him friendship turned out this way. You could feel how much it hurt Sharpe.

@@wordsmith52 Honor might have led to great things in some situation, more often often than not it was just an excuse to kill, even when in the wrong.
But sure, let's pretend that all the men of this time were magically mentally stable and that sickness of the mind didn't exist (perhaps you should read the literature of the time).
The reality is, they had a different environment, they adapted to it. Just like modern humans adapt tot heir specific situations,
There are cowards today just as there used to be cowards before, there are less matters of "honor".. and frankly when you have a look at history it's a good thing, honor is something that sounds good on paper only, it was nothing but rituals and status, it had absolutely nothing to do with morality, and I'd rather have a moral society rather than an honorable one.
The age of reason came to be, and I'm sorry that you find it sad that justice is served by tribunals and not through trial by combat, we figured out that being better at stabbing others doesn't make you right.. Shocking I know.
