As someone that’s been listening to this man since early 2000s. Amazing to see how this is a song he continues to update. And it forever continues to get better
He's got so much raw talent. I've seen him 4 times live and every song literally sounds like his album's. No auto tune, no fancy producing/mixing, just a man with a voice and his guitar. The way music SHOULD be.
North west is where I'm headin', Underneath the golden sky, I'm searching for wisdom, That every man seeks to find. I've got wicked thoughts brewing, And the evil deeds I've done, I'm looking for a reason, For a reason not to run. Because I've always been dark, With light somewhere in the distance, I've always been dark, With light somewhere in the distance. I've got no destination, No place to call my own, I'll explore the constellations, To find the course I'm meant to hold, But come fever or come famine, Come by the winter cold, Just put two coins upon my eyelids, So I can pay the boatmans toll. 'Cus I've always been dark, With light somewhere in the distance, I've always been dark, With light somewhere in the distance. I've been so unforgiving, Stranded and old traditioned, I've always been dark, With light somewhere in the distance, Ohhh ohh ohhh, Ohh ohh ohhh, Ohh ohh ohh Ooooohhh I've always been dark, With light somewhere in the distance, I've always been dark, With light somewhere in the distance. With light somewhere in the distance.
He wrote it about himself. A constant search to find whatever it is he's looking for but never knowing exactly what that is. And that one line is about as honest as it gets. I've always been dark with light somewhere in the distance. So true. There is a lot of that in his writing. It isn't always about relationship stuff, even though there is quite a bit of it. but if you dig, you see that there is always a glimmer of hope. What's amazing is that he has this way of making the instruments sound like the feelings themselves. If that makes sense to anyone. It does to me. I'm drawn to singer songwriters like him. Chris cornell, Aaron Lewis, travis meeks, guys like this whose music you can feel. You can relate to. And it can actually help you to deal with things in life. They have a way of expressing things better than you can express them yourself. Dallas green I just barely discovered but I've already listened to so much of his stuff I feel like I've known about him forever. Like my other favorites, he writes real, meaningful music and it doesn't hurt that he's great at what he does and makes it sound damn good too. He is ridiculously talented. He plays more instruments than people realize and is always seeking to improve himself. Guys like this make me love music and everything about it.
Lots of people are looking for that one thing, unfortunately most people miss it or ignore it completely. Jesus is what I have had to hold on to. I used to get depressed listening to his music because it seemed so sad. I now can listen with a smile on my face.
"I've always been dark with light somewhere in the distance" the best lyric ever IMHO. This guy plays in a whole different league than 99% of the whole music industry.
Someone long ago who systematically destroyed me was the one who showed me Dallas Green, and for that I truly can never repay them, because Dallas' music has seen me through my darkest nights and brought me closer to myself. Much love and respect.
Legit same bro the guy who showed me city and colour ruined my life as much as he could and the only gift he ever gave me was the knowledge of city and colour.
Holy shit!! Hes absolutely amazing. How have I never listened to him before? Going through a divorce at the moment...lost my house, my car (to my wife) and this song hits pretty hard.
Omg this song.... it gets me. It really does. I’ve loved this man in Alexisonfire. Literally my favorite band ever. And I love city and Colour since he started it. Both are played by me 95% of my life. And I like a lot of music. He songs, his writings and his voice is amazing. Probably the best ever.
I really wish he'd put out an album of him playing his stuff solo acoustic like this. I still enjoy his album stuff, but in truth, I prefer this type of arrangement/style on a lot of his songs. Songs like this one, "Thirst", "Silver and Gold", Fragile Bird" and several others I keep watching on YT really take on a whole new vibe like this... Still, he's great any way you look at it, and I do love the live performances I've seen with his band ("As Much As I Ever Could" on the GC sessions is amazing). I love seeing him going into a more "traditional" style with a roots/blues vibe as I'm much more into that type of music then his previous "melodic Hardcore" or whatever they call it. Simply put: He's got jaw-dropping talent.
I feel the same way....I listen to his youtube acoustic solo versions all the time, and prefer them to his album cuts...Is there any way to get these versions on audio files?
Agreed. The intro and outro of the video are way too loud and ruin the mood of the song. To the uploader: If your viewers have to strategically wait with the cursor on the mute button, YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING WRONG! That being said, thanks for the upload, this song rules.
One thing I think most people miss while watching his acoustic sets (unless you play guitar) is how talented this man is at guitar. Dallas knows his axe and has made it a part of him. With that being said, he's a brilliant musician and a inspiration to many other musicians.
He infuriates me because the skill he shows off the most is his right hand which is my absolute weakest aspect of my own playing so I can’t learn any of his goddam songs no matter how easy they sound lol
I've always been dark with light somewhere in the distance. We are all seeking to find the light. it's there. I hope you find it........love your vibe.
a lot of people know who he is its just the fact that he doesn't seek the wrong attention but only speaks his mind and that's basically his goal not fame
This song is so beautiful!!! I was walking to work on the beach ( work at the peer) and just cried listening and feeling i too...have always been dark with light somewhere in the distance. I know so much about me now. Im very much yin ☯
Always been a Dallas Green fan, but heard this song for the first time today. I've been thinking lately everything I've ever been taught is a lie, but then this song pops up. What inspires me about his songs are that he's trying to be the best version of himself.
He's incredible, just one thing though...In the lyrics it's "so I can pay the boat man's toll" not "poor man's toll". It's a reference to coins being laid upon a dead man's eyelids and the river styx, the boatman carries you to the underworld.
If your a long time Dallas fan. He has a song called body in a box that is the difference in that line. He made the song tie into his own. But honestly great catch.
He has intentionally not sold out to big labels. ive heard him speak on it. he could of had worldwide mega fame if he wanted a long time ago....hes a true musician
Damn his live voice is pretty great. Normally bands/artists with studio-voices that are different from their normal voices... it kinda gets butchered live. But this is 1:1 true to form. Great stuff!
TO bad Dallas There are ways you must live, in which you are not willing To answer the questions within the Dark, to be far enough from the light, and given the chance to seek out the light within First, you must think of your worst nightmare, then embrace it as the destination, not the detour. Stop circling the problems, waiting to bite the hands that feeds you Move in, move close Grab them from inside the circle and pull them onto your side of the line First, you must reach the layers of hell you're not willing to step within So there will always be secrets that I know That I understand that I could tell you are true And you will not believe Because you have no suffered If you did, I wouldn't have to do anything Because you would have truly been dark, and truly found the light in the distance
Dallas I hope you take this as the compliment that I mean it to be...... This could have easily been an Alice in chains song! It has everything musically that they produced...... Only it's yours....... I hope this song gets the credit it deserves and is remembered the way their songs are!
Never really known what I’m looking for but always felt lost in darkness looking for a way out. Maybe that’s just what depression feels like, I dunno 🤷🏻♂️
When P!nk said one of the most beautiful voices to walk this earth. She truly knew what she was talking about
As someone that’s been listening to this man since early 2000s. Amazing to see how this is a song he continues to update. And it forever continues to get better
It’s impossible to choose a favorite Dallas Green song
Everything he touches is gold
He's got so much raw talent. I've seen him 4 times live and every song literally sounds like his album's. No auto tune, no fancy producing/mixing, just a man with a voice and his guitar. The way music SHOULD be.
Amen. I can't wait to see him love one day. His music touches me unlike anything else I've listened to before.
I wish he would perform somewhere close to me, heck I'd even travel a state over to see him
Dylan k so true bro! Dallas Green is one of the all time greats. I hope my skill will even be half of his
Just seen him and your right about that!! Sounds so good live!
I Read only trues .
Dallas' songs are my anti anxiety med. Whenever I feel anxious or have a panic attack, they calm me down.
Every now and then someone writes a song that strikes at the very core of my being. This is one of those moments.
His voice and guitar playing absolutely rips thru my soul 😭😭😭
by far the best version of this song
I'll never forget discovering this man's music back in 2012 or seeing him live. Always gonna be one of the artists that will be a top 5 for me.
North west is where I'm headin',

I'm searching for wisdom,
That every man seeks to find.

I'll explore the constellations,
To find the course I'm meant to hold,
But come fever or come famine,
Come by the winter cold,
Just put two coins upon my eyelids,
So I can pay the boatmans toll.

With light somewhere in the distance,

Ohh ohh ohh
Ooooohhh
I've always been dark,
With light somewhere in the distance,
I've always been dark,
With light somewhere in the distance.
With light somewhere in the distance.
This is hands down the definitive version
His voice doesn't need one bit of editing in the studio. It sounds perfect on his records, it sounds perfect live. Can't get much more real than that.
Dude your voice speaks to my soul. Thank you for that brother.
ALL
I've always said this. it's so true
Love you Dallas.

I agree with everything you said
aymen bro
10000% agreed
It's amazing to watch him play
He exudes honesty, and man can you feel it. Dude IS a gift
It's amazing someone can be so talented
Lots of people are looking for that one thing, unfortunately most people miss it or ignore it completely. Jesus is what I have had to hold on to. I used to get depressed listening to his music because it seemed so sad. I now can listen with a smile on my face.

Has been, is, and will always be my favorite song. But meant to be is something all on its own.
Dallas Green's sound reminds me of a cold morning staring out to anything with a cup of coffee
Holy shit!! Hes absolutely amazing. How have I never listened to him before? Going through a divorce at the moment...lost my house, my car (to my wife) and this song hits pretty hard.
This bloke will change you life.
For the better!
Keep your head up bro. Things are going to look up for you soon. It’ll all be better when it’s over, if it’s not better then it’s not over.
i would say this is the most brutally honest song he's ever written, amazing lyrics.
“I’ve always been dark, with light somewhere. In, the distance.....” nice 👍🏽
Not to take anything away from all the hard work Dallas puts in, but he had so much God-given, natural talent. I’m grateful he is maximizing it.
Pure brilliance. You can really tell that he puts his heart into his music.
This man inspires me.
I can't think of another soul that can capture a feeling quite like Dallas can. Moved to the core. 💗
Paul Dempsey springs to my mind
I really wish he'd put out an album of him playing his stuff solo acoustic like this. I still enjoy his album stuff, but in truth, I prefer this type of arrangement/style on a lot of his songs. His first album "Sometimes" is all solo acoustic.
I feel the same way....I listen to his youtube acoustic solo versions all the time, and prefer them to his album cuts...Is there any way to get these versions on audio files?
Victor Caron www.youtube-mp3.org
if you think this is good, you should see him live strictly acoustic... oh my. it was perfect.
Going tonight!!! Totally stoked :)
Literally my favorite artist, reminds me of a new eric Clapton. NEVER GETS OLD! RAW TALENT
I can't stop listening to this song
Eminem
Same
I love City and Colour albums with the full band but there's something about this dude solo with his guitar that just speaks to me.
He is the band...the other people just come and go.
This man is legendary, I'm weak when it comes to his music.. So perfectly amazing..
Thank you for ruining my eardrums for the beautiful Dallas Green with that explosive intro.....
Agreed. The intro and outro of the video are way too loud and ruin the mood of the song. To the uploader: If your viewers have to strategically wait with the cursor on the mute button, YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING WRONG!
That being said, thanks for the upload, this song rules.
Got a 5.20 track of free music, better start complaining about 10 seconds. Come on people be ... thankful ?
One thing I think most people miss while watching his acoustic sets (unless you play guitar) is how talented this man is at guitar. Dallas knows his axe and has made it a part of him. With that being said, he's a brilliant musician and a inspiration to many other musicians.
underrated comment. His subtle embellishments are incredible
He infuriates me because the skill he shows off the most is his right hand which is my absolute weakest aspect of my own playing so I can’t learn any of his goddam songs no matter how easy they sound lol
I've always been dark with light somewhere in the distance. We are all seeking to find the light. it's there. I hope you find it........love your vibe.
i've always been dark with light somewhere in the distance
❤
My soul feels this man and most of the music he has made - the essence of hauntingly beautiful
Contender for one of the most beautiful voices of my generation (2000’s-2010’s)
Dallas has talent that cannot be measured. True inspiration.
What a voice...
Why doesn't this have more views!!! So much better then the studio version!
a lot of people know who he is its just the fact that he doesn't seek the wrong attention but only speaks his mind and that's basically his goal not fame
GORGEOUS SONG.
"Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes"
George Harrison
Best Live Set I have ever seen. period.
What a gangsta with that guitar 🎸

Everyone needs to stop the stupid bs. This guy is great. Say it! That's it!. He's got talent. We like the guy. Tame it down!.
I first heard this beautiful song as the background music of someone's trekking video, and just googled it to find the lyrics...love this song...
His ability to play so clean and sing so brilliantly has always been a phenomenon
Further brilliance from Dallas Green... guys amazing.
He's so good at singing with a high larynx it's almost falsetto not quite though. It's beautiful. Amazing

Always been a Dallas Green fan, but heard this song for the first time today. I've been thinking lately everything I've ever been taught is a lie, but then this song pops up. What inspires me about his songs are that he's trying to be the best version of himself.
I love love love Dallas Green, this man paints a song with the perfect emotions!
mmm Dallas and his voice of pure gold
The feels..this song hits me so hard..
@Matt H what does that song have to do with this song? I've heard both and I too am a fan. I dont understand the correlation?
@@allison3811 he just likes to integrate ideas from his songs some times into others. Or maybe I’m just pick up something
He's the soft spoken layne

Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Damn his live voice is pretty great. Normally bands/artists with studio-voices that are different from their normal voices... it kinda gets butchered live. But this is 1:1 true to form. Great stuff!
I don't how I'm just hearing this but amazing tune.
City and Colour. Oh I get it, cause his name's Dallas Green.
not all the stuff is solo
Holy fuck!
why WHY
Ssshhhh.. Let him figure it out himself.
It's pretty clever haha
TO bad Dallas
There are ways you must live, in which you are not willing
To answer the questions within the Dark, to be far enough from the light, and given the chance to seek out the light within
First, you must think of your worst nightmare, then embrace it as the destination, not the detour.
Stop circling the problems, waiting to bite the hands that feeds you
Move in, move close
Grab them from inside the circle and pull them onto your side of the line
First, you must reach the layers of hell you're not willing to step within
So there will always be secrets that I know
That I understand
that I could tell you are true
And you will not believe
Because you have no suffered
If you did, I wouldn't have to do anything
Because you would have truly been dark, and truly found the light in the distance
Dude looks like two different people when you go back to this and then look at him now
An Incredible talent
Perfection. The End
city and color is my favorite! my total inspiration for my guitar playing!
This song saved my life
Incredibly creative and fulfilling. I love this tune. Grateful.
Funeral Song! Brilliant!
Such a sweet sounding meaningful song. Thanks for sharing your soul
Dallas is an incredible talent.
Supremely talented Canada does it again
Man this is golden-
Dallas I hope you take this as the compliment that I mean it to be...... This could have easily been an Alice in chains song! It has everything musically that they produced...... Only it's yours....... I hope this song gets the credit it deserves and is remembered the way their songs are!
There's about 149 people who didn't appreciate musicianship...no light in the distance, just darkness.
Thanks for your voice, my vibrations are balanced !!
it's like your voice is belt deep within my being
Wow. I just came from metal (Novelists - You should check them out) to this. Color me blown away.
I love him more than everyone else!
Never really known what I’m looking for but always felt lost in darkness looking for a way out. Maybe that’s just what depression feels like, I dunno 🤷🏻♂️
That was beautiful.
