As someone who casually played dauntless for a couple years, the game’s biggest downfall was trying to be monster hunter despite its goofy fortnite-looking visuals and substantially more forgiving dodge windows. The devs appealed to the niche sub-community of diehard trials speedrunners (I still have no idea why anyone would willingly devote their life to dauntless trials when monster hunter exists) by completely gutting everything that allowed for some casual fun (prime examples being chain blades and the plethora of funny but impractical methods of getting absurdly high damage numbers) in favour of making (or at least trying to make) the game a super serious hardcore experience. It’s like if Chuck-e-Cheese tried to rebrand as a gourmet restaurant.
I agree. I was one of the biggest dauntless fans before release. I was SO happy to get a monster hunter like game. But then it came out?… and it wasn’t similar but more a knock off. Just goofy. And barely so at that
I would agree. What makes Monster Hunter the king is that, typically, its world is very grounded. Not realistic, mind, grounded. The game strives to give everything an answer. Have you noticed that most electric monsters outsource their electricity since it would disrupt their nervous system which needs clear electrical signals to properly funtcion? Tobi-Kadachi uses static electricity, Zinogre has fulgurbugs, Rajang eat Kirin horns, etc. Lagiacrus and Namielle i would assume works similarly to electric eels where they shunt ions through special membrane to generate electricity. And even Kirin is a unicorn with a lightning rod for a horn. What makes standard monsters cool is the same thing that makes a lion cool, or an elephant cool. They just exist in harmony with their environment, completely and utterly. Everything about them can be explained with biology, like how Anjanath doesnt breath fire, it just sneezes or exhales its very flammable snot, or how Barroth's skin is very susceptible to being dried out, so it covers itself in mud to keep moist when traversing to the insects that it eats. We might not have the all of the answers yet, but they are there and we know that they are. Having the norm be explainable is what makes Elder Dragons so cool. From their near universal biology where they have 6 limbs instantly breaks one rule of groundedness. Teostra eats sulphur and gunpowder, which would explain its fire and blast dust, but doesnt explain how it gets nutrients. Amatsu can just float, Narwa and Ibushi have their completely alien biology with their limbs nearly completely atrophied. The absolute pinnacle of this is Fatalis, the other Black Dragons, and Safi'Jiiva/Xeno'Jiiva. They might as well be actual aliens, hell, Safi might legitimately be one. Where the others fail is from the get-go, these things are weird and unexplainable. Kemono are forces of nature made manifest, even the rat. Aragami and the monsters of Toukiden just showed up one day, completely detached from the world. There is no norm for the monsters, and no baseline for the cooler, epic monsters to stray from.
(i'm sorry for my english, it's not my first language) I think one of the main reason MH is more successful than its competitors, other than being the pioneer of the genre/the first to release, is that the developer utilise those years mainly to perfect its gameplay. While other titles feels good on the get go, over times you can feel that some of them doesn't have a good level of polish, or at worst feels shallow. There's more than one instances in those games where i felt like certain weapon types is poorly balanced against certain enemies, making them too easy or too frustrating. Most first timers will say that MH's gameplay is clunky, slow, etc, but when you delve into it you can feel that they have put a lot of effort into how your character moves with each weapons, even down to the monsters. Their animations, the nuances, it flows matches the movesets of your weapons, and has a certain rhythm you need to follow to successfully bring them down. It's more than a decade's worth of devs finetuning them as best as they could, to feel as good as it can be.
Great video! I generally agree with you, MH seperates itself because it creates a living breathing world in which its monsters make sense to exist and how they behave. The level pf immersion in MH games is as of this moment still, unrivaled. Can't wait to see more studios trying their shot at the MH genre now that it has been normalized, I expect to see great things in the future. But for now, MH is king and let's hope on some new MH (game and genre) news at TGA :)
the best of the Mon Hun likes was honestly Soul Sacrifice Delta and Freedom Wars but since they were on Vita and not ported to console like everyone who played them wanted, well they went down with the ship doomed to be forgotten with their mistreated handheld
I'm so happy God Eater is finally recieving more love recently Definitely the aragami designs is what i expect for monsters Not dinosaurs like monsters Not animal fused with plants But abominations that makes no sense but you can understand how they ended like that if you know the lore Speaking of weapons, the gun form in God Eater 3 doesn't work the same as in God Eater 2 or Resurrection AT ALL In GE3 is mostly used for Burst Mode but in the previous game you can get Aragami Bullets wich depending on the Gun you're using, you'll steal one to three of the aragami attacks by using the Predator Form And you can share this special bullet with other NPC and players, increasing the power of this shot from Level 1 to Level 3 And let's not forget the Bullet Editor Now, the behaviour of the Aragami is solely to Devour, they're not living creatures, they're a bunch of cells that got a form by devouring literally anything There are even Tree aragami that at the point of GE3, are the ones that provide oxygen and ironically, keep humanity alive And once you kill an Aragami, they disolve in the ground, but not because they're dead, it's because they need a new core Basically, the entire world is an Aragami at this point that can produce more cores with more cell colonies that emerge as aragami by devouring random stuff So the Aragami are just roaming around in the world, killing whatever they need to devour and keep evolving, it doesn't matter if it's more aragami or humans, but humans are the most attractive for them
God Eater Burst back on the PSP was actually my first Hunter type game and I absolutely loved it. I tried playing Freedom Unite after but it was too hard for me so I went back to God Eater LOL Now that I have a lot more Monster Hunter experience I can say that God Eater gameplay is a little lacking, especially in the first title, but I still love the world and the story of the series. My biggest gripe was how the third game played though. Although it probably was the best playing game, it kinda suffered through what Rise went through with how the hunter was super strong and mobile, while the monsters couldn't keep up. I don't think any hunt lasted much more than 5 minutes and it really took me out of the experience, the Aragami being creatures that put humanity on the brink of extinction, but here I am beating every one of them with my eyes closed and my hands tied behind my back.
@@sir_coma60 Don't get me wrong I still love Rise to bits, but imagine the power difference between the hunter and the monsters in Rise but on steroids, that's what GE3 felt like.
@@Potatorow uhh, God Eater 3 actually nerf the hell out of your character. You cant carry much recovery items as before, bullets are more restrictive, Stamina usage for everything but running is increased God Eater 3 actually teach you to rely on your own abilities more than previous games. Before, you can just make the perfect bullet to destroy Aragami in 30 seconds, not thats not the case
For me, when i think about the other games, specially God Eater, the first thing that came to my mind is the word "Generic". Toukiden could make a step above and beyond in the aspect of the monsters affecting the enviorment, like every monster would change the aspect of the scenarios in a way that makes comfortable for them. MHW is a perfect example, when the Blackveil Vaal Hazak goes to the forest, there are spores everywhere, so he is so powerfull that he changes the enviorment around him. Toukiden monsters are powerfull spiritual creatures, they could easily do the same and at some point of the game we could go and hunt them in their world, but this is just what it could be not what it was.
Toukiden has the most boring monster design? Excuse me? It has the best monster design actually. Even God Eater borrowed its idea with Ash Aragami in GE3 Every monster in Toukiden has very distinct angry mode that still put Monster Hunter to shame Heres an example; Pyropteryx is a Yian Kut-Ku style monster, with typical bird-like attacks, but when its angry, it stand straight up and its wings can stretch like Luffy and have tons of sweeping attacks In Toukiden 2, they added permanent body part removal system. If you delete a monster's legs, theyll start crawling with their arms instead and they have completely different attacks Imagine that in Monster Hunter. Break Rathalos's wings so its stop flying, or cutting Rathian's tail so it would go off balance They teased a little in bit Toukiden 2, there are Oni unique to other parts of the world. They introduced Drakwing, a typical western Dragon Oni Also, 12:25. I doubt you did this in God Eater, I recommend picking Sniper Gun to go invisible (R1 + Circle) and just watch Aragami. Every Aragami have their distinct personalities; theres an Aragami in the second game called Kabbala Kabbala, based on African witch doctor. Its non-combat animations are consist of rhythmic dancing Not to mention Aragami have different sight and hearing level. There was a mission in the older game where you essentially play Hide n Seek, they made Aragami in the mission can be one shotted when attacked unnoticed Yes, God Eater has better stealth mechanic than Monster Hunter I started with Monster Hunter, other games are still better than Monster Hunter. Especially now when Monster Hunter is slowly losing its identity I especially like God Eater because the game force you to fight 4 large monsters at the same time. Like, imagine fighting 4 Rajangs at the same time in the arena map. That aint gonna work for any other game but God Eater, because the game is designed to meet that expectation
EXCELLENT video! Wonderful MH youtuber content 🙏✅ Make sure in future videos, you represent on screen what you're talking about. For example, at the end you were talking about Toukiden but you were showing footage from God Eater.
My biggest problem with wildhearts and gods eater was I didn't like the weapons. Monster hunter weapons not only look cool, but feel good. Gods eater combat always felt the most lack luster to me.
What might work as a game might be using the IP of Love & Monsters, a movie which gave a post apocalyptic flare to monster hunting. They have some neat monster concepts put to film, animals drastically altered by years of radiation. Pretty decent lore too.
I think the thing wild hearts does worst is give importance to its monsters, the kemono are big and strong sure, but thats all they feel like, big and strong animals with some fantastical abilities, they lack impact and aren't nearly as unique as the monsters in monster hunter even tough they're a lot less. That said wild hearts is a really fun game, I'd even say just as much as any monster hunter, though the combat isn't as precise as monster hunter's so the more difficult fights feel just a bit too random.
For me personally God Eater is the only compettion, Dauntless is... well, not exactly competing and Wild Hearts seem not to be as much of a success as developer intended so I suppose it's one-and-done and not a beginning in a series developing its own style.
Beautifully crafted video! I have been trying to figure out why I can't seem to get into any other "MH-likes" for so long. Like, all the parts are there yet something is missing. I followed dauntless for a long while, I was a private beta tester, but I believe that their downfall was when they focused on quick behemoth kills and non-varied weapon playstyles and combos. I love old school MH games, 4U is mu favorite of all time, and its the limitations that I like the most. Timing your heals, commitment to each attack, etc. But you are totally right, not feeling like things are a part of the world you are in really hinders the experience! I suppose that's why GenU and Rise are tough for me to get into lol. Here's hoping MH Wilds doubles down on its world immersion!
Thank you! I used to play dauntless as well but stopped when it turn from an experience into a “game” if you catch my drift. That’s also why I’m so negative about it. I do still play other MH likes but they never really achieve what MH itself does.
"Toukiden has the most boring monster designs." Proceeds to show footage of a single Ogre. At least they have different body types and are more than just animals. Every large monster I've fought in Monster Hunter (Now) is either a dinosaur, a wyvern, a Kulu-Ya-Ku or an Odogaron.

Monster Hunter is the only one that attempts to create a cohesive world, with that worldbuilding having consequences for gameplay. Was quite disappointed when the aragami, creatures that were literally meant to adapt to any environment by absorbing their surroundings in their environment, really only looked like final fantasy bosses and acted like animals. I feel like there was a missed oppurtunity to play around with how aragami would mold the urban environment they inhabit into their own biology, as well as actively change themselves according to your hunt.

Speaking of weapons, the gun form in God Eater 3 doesn't work the same as in God Eater 2 or Resurrection AT ALL
In GE3 is mostly used for Burst Mode but in the previous game you can get Aragami Bullets wich depending on the Gun you're using, you'll steal one to three of the aragami attacks by using the Predator Form
And you can share this special bullet with other NPC and players, increasing the power of this shot from Level 1 to Level 3
And let's not forget the Bullet Editor
Now, the behaviour of the Aragami is solely to Devour, they're not living creatures, they're a bunch of cells that got a form by devouring literally anything
There are even Tree aragami that at the point of GE3, are the ones that provide oxygen and ironically, keep humanity alive
And once you kill an Aragami, they disolve in the ground, but not because they're dead, it's because they need a new core
Basically, the entire world is an Aragami at this point that can produce more cores with more cell colonies that emerge as aragami by devouring random stuff
