    Nothing better than having Ron Swanson teach me the ways to paint an x-wing 🙏🙏

    Fantastic walkthrough! I was wondering what type of paper and how thin do they have to be the to work fine as decals? I think decals is worth a whole chapter :) Cheers

      I'm assuming you're talking about the photo paper I used for the targeting screen in the cockpit? It's just standard glossy photo paper. I may have separated the paper in half with a blade, but don't remember. I have done that in the past, just use a blade and slice down the paper kind of removing the top glossy portion from the rest of the paper.

    Outstanding work. Very anxious to see how this comes out.
    I'm about to start the 1/72 Bandai X-wing and I was curious if you painted the hull or just applied weathering to the bare plastic.
    Either way it's looking beautiful.

    Wonderfull job as always Chris ! Each of your models is epic ! I just have one question, why don't you add thin acrylic windows to the cockpit to give still more realism. I was wondering. Anyway your skill is way up high, can't wait for the final reveal, in one word BRAVO.

    • @modelsbychris
      @modelsbychris  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My reason for no window is 1. Because of light reflection, and 2. That's the way the studio models were done, also because of light reflection. I always certainly could though at any time, as the canopy is removable.

    after watching a few of these videos, I'm wondering what one might look like if you black based the entire model first and THEN paint/mottel the ship color to add depth to the panel lines, and using chipping medium or hairspray to create battle scars and beauty marks. I might have to pick one up to try! they look like fun kits.

    • @modelsbychris
      @modelsbychris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have done that to some kits.

    Have you study painting? Because you seem to have a deep understanding of the colours.

    • @modelsbychris
      @modelsbychris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. No, I've never studied painting. I've just always loved building models and just doing artistic things like drawing. Other than models, I've actually never painted.

    I guess I already know the answer to this question, which is no. But does no one make aftermarket good, clear, low glare, low distortion glass or plastic for models?
    I've seen enough of Christopher Olson's videos to know that the original movie prop makers didn't use windows or glass inserts either because of the problem of glare and distortions. But to me, it seems like there has to be a modern solution for this, rather than just leaving the glass parts off the display models.

    • @modelsbychris
      @modelsbychris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know. I wish there was something. Although, the glare or reflection is what shows that there is glass, which then interferes with the interior. I've recently seen online a new glass that's been developed that has NO reflection what-so-ever. They're talking about it for car windshields. Still very expensive at the moment and experimental. But would be cool.

      @@modelsbychris Thanks for responding, can you point me in the direction of the stuff you've read about for car models? What's it called. I don't build car models, but I do build aircraft models and I've never been satisfied with the glass parts.

    Another great video/job on the model. I was wondering, do you use anything to set the pastels? If not dont they just wipe off?

    Just stumbled across this video and I'm sure there's others that came before it but I'm just wondering what you used for a base color? I'm torn on whether there should be a slight tan/buff hue to it or just a pure light grey.

    • @modelsbychris
      @modelsbychris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kind of a personal preference really. I used Tamiya Insignia White AS-20. The studio model is actually gray, as was the Falcon. I was going for a close studio model match. However, either due to lighting on set or color correction in post, the ships appear to have just a slightly warmer temperature. The tan hue is always kind of a debate among fans.

    • @j_holtslander
      @j_holtslander 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Olson Insignia white is what I used on my 1/350?Bandai Falcon and I think it looks ok there for the scale but maybe the tiny Bandai X-wings should closer to white then? Hmm.
