The Marching Eagles of Milford (Nebraska) High from 1983 -- we blew out windows and woke the dead with this one. I was lead trumpet and we had such a blast doing this for our street marching team.
Yeah! This must have been the banger of '83. I went to a tiny school in Upstate NY, where I was the only French horn player in the system at the time. The HS band director brought me over from middle school to play the mellophone, and tweaked the part a bit to serve as a counter-solo to the trumpet solo. What a thrill for a 12-year-old! I've played music all of my life, but that was probably the most fun I've had doing it.
This was a banger back in the late 80s/early 90s in Wisconsin. I’m surprised I haven’t suffered some form of permanent hearing loss from how loud we played this.
Oh yeah - bands played the hell out of this when it came out, ours included. That was the year of Spanish-themed marches, as Jenson also came out with "Aztec Fire", which is not only in the same key, but also follows a nearly identical chord progression and has basically the same feel as "Mirada". Always wondered if one was the rejected portions of the other...
We played it for Pep Band in high school 86-87. We were going to March it, but we played Sunrise Lady and Firebird that year. Great Senior Year. Loved my trumpet solo on Sunrise Lady
My second-favorite song to ever play in a marching band (1st was NMSU Showboat Gamblers version of 'Shenandoah"). I can still remember and play my tenor part for Mirada from high school, 30yrs later. Our drumline thought we were GODS when we really nailed this piece! Can't recall which one of the Jensen stable composed this now, but it was a masterpiece IMHO.
I have the F Horn part for Mirada (by Bob Cotter). Had to play Mirada in my Jr. High Marching Band (Ramona, Chino, CA). When we caught ourselves Marching alone without our Director in some long city parade, and we come across some onlookers looking for music, we would fire up some Mirada to make them happy. Not sure why they're making 7th-8th graders march in 5-mile parades carrying our instruments and full uniforms, but we got it done.
Taylor Griffith Jenson used to get the University of Oklahoma "Pride of Oklahoma" marching band to make the live recordings. They used a studio jazz band for the non-live stuff.
I remember this, it was our opener for our half time show; 1985 LCB Skyhawks marching band. Our tempo was a good bit faster, and much louder. Had a reputation for a big sound, that could be heard a number of miles away.
Two out of three HS marching bands played this in competition for the 1982 season. I got so tired of hearing it. It is a great arrangement, but it was too popular.
Yes this is *exactly* what I remember at the band competition we went to also. I mean all day, band after band would get up there and play "Mirada", and we started laughing each time we heard it.
Mirada, Veracruz, that’s 80’s marching band right there! Loved that stuff!! Could probably still play it! 🎷

Millard north seems to do this every day now too, the tradition continues

Yeah I think it was Bob Cotter! I seem to recall saving the sheet music somewhere and remember seeing "Bob Cotter" at the top by the title.
It was Bob Cotter
farmingdale high school (long island, NY) marching band - class of 2003 !!
Rocori High School. 5-time MBA Top-10 and 3-time Drum Line National Champs in late 80's. We opened with this song 3 of the 5 years I marched.

This is actually NLU Sound of Today who they also used for 'live' recordings.
Shoot..I had to get up and be a Drum Major again
