Another good interesting video. However there is one issue that I have with it. What makes a home a homestead ? A homestead is an American thing. In the UK it's a smallholding. Just as cider vinegar is just that. Not apple cider vinegar. You can't make cider from anything other than apples. Please don't succumb to treating the UK as another US state.

Hi Chris, and thanks so much for your comment. I completely get where you are coming from and do definitely agree on not wanting to Americanise myself or what I’m doing. I guess there is a subtle difference between homesteads and smallholdings as far is I can tell, and I think I’d sum it up as to me a smallholding contains animals as an integral part of its set-up, and is more based around farming. That’s an admirable goal and one I have for the future again. Whereas homesteading has more of an emphasis on the kitchen, with things like preserving and fermenting. Now obviously there is huge overlap, and nothing is mutually exclusive. That’s at least my take on these not well defined differences. 😊

@@SelfSufficientHub Hi and thanks for such a prompt reply. And thanks for not taking offence at my comments, that was certainly not my intention. To be honest, I think your take on the difference between smallholdings and homesteads is spot on and not one that had occurred to me before. I live on what I suppose I must refer to as a ' fermette' . Literally a small farm, 12.5 acres , with a gite, heated pool, orchard, 9 x 4m polytunnel and a veg garden ( potager)( must not anglicise!!). With the hope that this autumn we will be joined by some chickens. At that time I will be starting my own you tube channel, ha ! Watch this space. In the meantime keep up the good work and stay safe. 🙂 ps. Please don't start saying tomaytoes!

If I might, as an American homesteader, comment, in the most respectful way; that was actually a very interesting comparison! I am homesteading in the Adirondacks, and am a red white and blue American lol. But in my heart and soul, I live in the UK. I watch uk TV, and follow the very interesting regulations you all have in both your real estate (I don't get the planning stuff, like wow, its your actual property which I'm sure you pay taxes on, and the listed properties are WOW, lol). However, in my mind, homesteading is a state of mind. Here in America, our weather is probably our number one adversary.( I think followed closely by Australia). To me, someone like Carl, who literally takes on every possible challenge (harken back to the shoot to freezer podcast) 100% embodies the spirit of a homesteader; we're out here providing for our families and ourselves, and whether that's on our balconies or on vast tracts of land, its the mindset of Never Give Up. Never Give In. And that, to my mind is what joins us all together. Peace, and big hugs! ❤❤❤

Couldn’t agree more! Homesteading is to do with heart and soul, not land and size.
It’s about making the best use of the space, house and home you have and working with what you have.
The place looks amazing! You guys have done so much, so impressed! We are moving next week and I will be glad when it’s over as it’s over a 600 mile trip to the new house!

Awesome, awesome effort guys! You have achieved so much. Absolutely agree that homesteading is a state of mind. We don’t know yet what our homestead will look like when we finally move from where we are but it could well be urban. That won’t stop us though! Really looking forward to following this next part of your journey. 😉👍

I’ve always thought that a homestead Is wherever your heart is, even if that’s an apartment! We’re to have also downsized from 50 acres etc down to one acre… and I’m loving it so much more, I’m enjoying my simplified life, my garden, sewing, spinning all the things I didn’t have time for.
Much love to you all and I’m really looking forward to the videos going forward… enjoy all the good things that are going to come your way 🥰

Hi Carl! I haven't watched your TH-cam videos lately but I have been keeping up with your podcast. It's great to see that open kitchen space and to see your positive attitude on the whole. I love the look and design of the kitchen shelves you made.

Dear Carl, Hello to your new home - it is looking fantastic! You are quite right, the shelf over the countertop ties it all together.
And aren't you looking the part - Mr. Urban Homesteader himself, in that button-down shirt. That's going to take some getting use to. : )
Very excited about all the opportunities that have opened up to you - curious if you'll be able to source local goat & cow's milk for all those cheese recipies we'll be trying out? You really hit it on the head - "What makes a house a homestead? You do". I couldn't agree more.
Can't wait to experience this chapter in the journey - keep up the inspiring work!!!

I've spent all day planting 1200 onions, so as I soak the pain away, I'm having further thoughts on a smaller homestead. We have 35 acres, which is nothing here in America. However, a smaller plot makes one think smarter about space- its super easy for me to waste all the real estate you have in your garden. Plus, urban homesteaders can also do an incredible amount of work promoting the concepts and ideals that we're all working for. Which is huge. Ok, passing out now lol. Cheers.🤪

What i think you might underestimate is your vision. I might have the land, but that isn't really the point in my mind.
You guys took a hell of a hit. You can sugar coat it all you want. I'm not sure I could have been as positive. To my mind, this is the core of the homestead mentality. Yes, we have land, but we endure unbelievable weather challenges (floods/high-water tables/wildlife), its all in how you deal with those challenges, and you guys are literally teaching people around the world how to roll with the punches, and I have nothing but respect for you 👏 ❤

Hi, we live in a victorian terrace in the West Midlands. I love your kitchen and we are just about to have the same sort of thing done in ours, we moved here just over 12 months ago it needed lots of work and this meant we had to leave the gardening for a year, we have finally got an allotment so its full steam ahead. I absolutely love your sentiment about its the people in the home that makes a homestead.

    • @SelfSufficientHub

Awesome mate. Is your internet quicker now? That might make a difference to your online world with us, hopefully easier. Can you have roosters in your area? How are you planning on being self sufficient in chicken? Obviously, meat may come from other things like rabbit. Maybe I'm jumping the gun, I can't help it. I'm so excited!

    • @SelfSufficientHub
      @SelfSufficientHub  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Haha yes the internet is way faster - I would usually upload this video overnight, this time it took ten minutes!! 😲
      Yes we can have roosters,
The meat issue is one we aren’t sure how we will solve just yet (we do have about 6 whole birds in the freezer still) but we have lots of ideas….
I’m thinking wild game like rabbit and pheasant will fill some gaps, and we are looking to raise some meat animals at my brother’s house too..

      Haha, I most certainly will!
I feel that I’m back at square one with raising meat- not with experience but with my family! There will be a gentle stepping stone approach as at the moment the idea of raising small cute animals for food a few paces from the back door is unpalatable to them - pun intended 🤣
