May Garden Tour - First real video of the new plot
This is my garden tour of our new plot and polytunnel. Things have progressed with loads of spring growth, new no dig beds, polytunnel salad crops, no dig potato field and much more.
The brassica cage is up and running and I have been weeding for what feels like years!
Thanks for your patience and I hope you enjoy this one.

Baking powder contains an acid to react in inert baked goods. Your sourdough already has plenty of acid, and will react more vigorously with the baking soda!

I have a question for you. I see that you made your yogurt using milk out of the fridge, and you added your starter to that. Cold milk with the cold starter into the yogurt maker? I just wanted to verify that. Also, I have done that and set both the timer and temp settings and let it go all night, for 12 hours. It has a tart yogurt taste to it so I think that it is okay. It was not thick, but thicker than milk. I have put it into the fridge to see if that will help to thicken it up some. I would appreciate any additional help on getting it to thicken up. Do you think heating the milk up would make any difference? And the milk that I used was whole milk purchased at the grocery store. Thank you in advance!

Okay! I have to tell you!! Fantastic! I put the yogurt into the fridge to cool off, and wowsers! The yogurt got firmer, thank goodness, and it's just about perfect! I am so pleased to the way it worked out. I am so happy on the outcome. Now I will be making yogurt probably a couple of times a week. I will experiment with low fat milk since this is what my husband picks up in the store when the weekly grocery shopping is done, but I am happy to try it and see how it works out. In any case, I am happy!! Oh, and before I forget, the yogurt machine I got is like the one in the video, and it is one of my anniversary gifts from my husband.

You poor fellow. The ground is often carpeted with them this time of year up here in VT. I usually eat my fill, give lots away and put up a good 100 lbs or more in my dehydrator. I've taught my dog to find them. We've actually got 4 varieties. A small orange one that is early, a big yellow one most of the summer, a pale tan one that is kinda flimsy and these tiny little cinnabar ones. They like the steep slopes and the spruce trees up here. Def one of my favorites. I like to put the dried ones in my coffee grinder and sprinkle it on just about everything. Great addition to my fermented ramp salt.

I just discovered your video and went into town today and picked a whole bunch of horse chestnut leaves, and the actual horse chestnuts surrounded by green spiky. I noticed that yours were picked when it was blooming and I picked today when it’s fruiting is there much of a difference in timing? Does it really matter when? Shall I include the conkers in while boiling? Also, I’m wondering what the shelflife is of this kind of soap? How is it on a septic system?

Ragwort is considered high risk if within 50m of grazing animals, medium if 100m. Official ragwort guidance on gov.uk says to not compost and that if cut when flowering, seed still sets - which seems to happen cut dandelion heads. Don't put the flowers in the compost unless it gets hot enough to kill the seed. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5cd93824e5274a38bf503d1d/code-of-practice-on-how-to-prevent-the-spread-of-ragwort.pdf 1 Safe disposal is an important part of ragwort control. Options for disposal will depend on the amount of ragwort to be disposed of and the local resources available for disposal. 2 Cut and pulled flowering ragwort plants may still set seed and all parts of the ragwort plant remain toxic when treated or wilted. Cut and pulled plants will therefore continue to pose a risk to horses and other grazing stock and should be removed from areas where they could be ingested by vulnerable animals. 3 Options for disposal of ragwort plants include, sealing in plastic bags for incineration or landfill, or by disposing in an environmentally acceptable way, whereby it will not be a risk to grazing animals and the seed will not be spread. When plants are incinerated this must be undertaken in accordance with the Code of Practice for the Protection of Air (Appendix 8) and Local Byelaws. Landfill sites must be an approved Local Authority facility. The Environmental Services Department of your Local Authority will be able to identify the nearest waste reception centre. When transporting pulled ragwort, care should be taken to ensure that it is either in a sealed container or well-covered to prevent the spread of seed. 4 Composting in the open is not recommended. If the composting process does not kill the seeds, there will be a risk of spread of ragwort. Composting should therefore not be used for disposal of r

Great video, thanks! Loved the humane life and killing part :) As a very fresh self sufficiency fan I have two questions. 1. Why didn't you bleed the chicken? Is this not always necessary? 2. Why don't you wear gloves when handling the knife and the carcass? It seems to me like an extra protection against infection, but noticed none of the youtubers wear gloves. Thanks in advance, best wishes S
