You were mentioning Greece 2004 as an example, but the difference between that squad and this England squad is that nobody expected them to came far. That achievement was massive, but you may expect more from this England side. I won’t say that they should win this tournament, but they need to play better.

No you don't, France is literally one of the teams that cannot say it.
Despite this Euros and even include it look how many chances you had on the target and the amazing build up plays, England is absolutely garbage and it's not even close.
I rather qualify to the quarter with some purely own goals rather then watch this England, They are not only playing bad... they getting owned simple as that.

The pinacle of being a fan is beating Brazil 7:1 in their own country in a semifinal of a world cup with 5 goals in the first 28 minutes and then go on to win 1:0 against Messis Argentina by a wonder goal in the 113th minute. All that while beating Ronaldos Portugal 4:1 and France 1:0 so 4 big nations, 3 of them under the biggest nations in world football. Germany 2014 were the best ever world cup winners.

I can give you one simple and most important reason why playing well necessary for winning championships is. You simply won't win consistently if you are not creating a lot of high quality chances. The only thing that makes it easier is you don't have to play a lot of games to win this trophy, basically 4 wins in a row and you can win it all. Not compareable to a champions league or championship.

The reality is that no team can be good in a national tournament. However, the amount of penalties were crucial in Argentinas run. Over the years, even before Southgate, we've seen England team get knocked out after sitting back on 1-0 leads and inviting pressure, which is on the minds of every England fan. I think the desire for attractive, attacking football is less about fans wanting to be entertained, and more about "not stressing us out" 😂

In the game against Slovakia, I noticed that the gap between the backline and the line in front of it was really wide. The Slovakian players were taking advantage of that space, slowing down and disrupting your build-up play significantly. It was frustrating to watch such a drawn-out build-up. As a suggestion from a German fan: how about pushing the backline further up to close the gap between the lines?

What's interesting is that before being successful for the last 25 years, France reacted a bit like England and English fans : WE NEED TO PLAY WELL TO WIN ! We were the beautiful losers. We were the romantic losers with great talents : Platini, Giresse, Tigana, Papin, Cantona, Ginola ; all great players who never achieved anything in World Cups. And frankly here in France we thought it would never change. Then came along that horrible France-Bulgaria game in 1993 which triggered the French football revolution in terms of approach. Jacquet and Deschamps came along and managed to convince everyone here that "playing well" is subjective and doesn't really mean anything. What's "playing well" ? Looking slick in midfield ? Looking great in defense ? Deschamps isn't really French in terms of football. He was a typical Italian midfield player of the early 90's, and as a coach, he's a great Italian coach of the 90's. His football approach is rational and simple : playing well is winning. That's it. It's a cup competition over 4 weeks, you're not here to develop any kind of revolutionary way of playing ; it's about the group, the unity, sticking together and fighting to death on the day. Deschamps sees the pitch as a battlefield. France hasn't scored in open play yes, but we do create a lot of chances and more importantly we are rock solid and didn't concede one goal in open play so far. France is all about destroying the opponent by blocking him and rendering him harmless. Ugly, but pure Deschamps. I don't know if we'll win this, but what I do know for certain is that we'll be incredibly hard to beat. If we lose it will probably be on penalties again. Because usually, no matter how, we always find a way.
In fact, since the EURO 2016 final, France has not lost a knockout game in open play ; our only two defeats since were on penalties, 3-3 against Switzerland in 2021, and 3-3 against Argentina in 2022. We won all the other games. Quite crazy to think about actually.

Have we played badly or have we just not delivered the final product? 1 shot and waiting til the 95th minute is hard to get excited about however we could very easily change the tide with providing more shots on target. More % chance to score and gets the fans on side. I know it looks poor but if we had the same playstyle with more chances but were 2 or 3 up you'd be satisfied.
Some stats from the tournament paint the picture.
    Possession % - 3rd
    Passing Accuracy - 4th
    Clean sheets - Joint 3rd
Goals - Lowest still remaining in the tournament
Attempts - Lowest still remaining in the tournament
Attempts on target - Lowest still remaining in the tournament (England have 12 shots on target vs Germany's 28 and Spain's 29).
This has to change, we can't keep playing with no chances created, we need to be more direct and create shots on target. It makes no difference if we have the best finisher in football, if you're only able to fashion 1 chance a game vs another teams 5/6 you're playing slim odds.
    For perspective....
Denmark - Nearly took the lead vs Germany and would have changed the game entirely. VAR saved and sank them, gave a good fight.
Slovenia - Took Portugal to penalties
    Slovakia - beat Belgium
We can only back our boys and hope that we can play more directly.

Maybe part of the problem is our media we’ve hyped up all these players which has built an expectation, let’s not forget the England squad is probably a billion pounds worth of players, fans pay good money to support them I think it’s only fair to expect a decent standard of football is a goal or 2 to much 2 ask.

The pinacle of being a fan is beating Brazil 7:1 in their own country in a semifinal of a world cup with 5 goals in the first 28 minutes and then go on to win 1:0 against Messis Argentina by a wonder goal in the 113th minute. All that while beating Ronaldos Portugal 4:1 and one of ur biggest rivals France 1:0 so 4 big nations, 3 of them under the most succescfull nations in world football. Germany 2014 were the best ever world cup winners.

Greece in 2004 is an interesting example. To add to what @yorick18 says below, another difference between that Greek team and the current England team is that Greece had a clear system and approach (thanks to their brilliant coach, Otto Renhagel) that they played consistently in every game. It was dull, negative and boring according to many observers at the time but they played it very well and thwarted the efforts of every opponent (apart from Russia) to break it down. In its own way, it was good football and I remember cheering and clapping them when the final whistle went and they'd beaten Portugal to take the trophy.

Of course, England could very well win Euro 2024. Apart from that the phrase “England plays poor” is not entirely correct. This is to some extent an aesthetic and subjective assessment.
    Yet for all that!
    1. England conceded only 2 goals.
    2. England allowed only 3.3 Хg for conceded goals. It the 6th best result in the tournament.
    3. England are in TOP-3 teams for ball possession.
Besides some fans DO LIKE the way the English squad plays. In terms of literature and cinema, England is "a brilliant anti-hero". This has its own poetry and paradox. I never rooted for England before. But this summer I root for it like hell.
