I nailed my knee one day on the bolt and said screw that. Went to Lowe’s and found the plastic knobs with the nut that worked perfectly. Different sizes and different installation methods. Good video.
I was shocked as well. That’s why I knew I had to come up with something. I figured I’d make a video for it because others would feel the same way I did.
Love the video and ideas. I think I'm going to do the same with a drink holder and rod holder but do it by using nylon or plastic bolts instead. For me, I fear that people getting in and out of the boat may step on my drink holder in particular and I'd rather have the plastic bolt snap off than to have that person bend the crap out of the Versatrack slot.
Whole cow, this worked awesome. I bought the rod holder that he mentions in the video and the following hardware: For plastic bolts: www.amazon.com/dp/B00L1KZOEK?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details For nuts: www.amazon.com/dp/B0B49XP4M4?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details I have $18 in hardware but I have extras bolts & wing nuts to use for the next few items that I find to attach. I wanted plastic bolts so that they would snap off if someone accidentally step on the rod holder when getting into the boat and they also won't scratch the paint surface on the versatrack. Side note: The base of this rod holder has one side that needs to be the top, if you flip it it around it doesn't work very well, so play attention to that as it took me a few minutes to figure that out. Also after you've mounted the base, you have to push the rod holder piece down in the base at the exact rotational point to make grooves line up and then play with it a little by pulling it up slightly then and rotating it. Takes a little getting use too which is why I think some buyers give this rod holder bad ratings on Amazon.
Someone once told me, "You know it's a great idea when you say to yourself, 'why didn't I think of that?'" 😁 On the rodholders I would have knocked down the angled plastic gussets so the washers laid flat, letting the wing nuts get a better bite. But that's nitpicking...
Your video was extremely helpful. Thanks so much for putting the time and effort to Let us know your hack. I have on order a 2022 pro 175TF that I’m waiting on. I’ll definitely use a few of these that you mentioned.
Just got a new 2020 Tracker 175TXW and was about to pull the trigger on some Cannon Rod Holders. I'm buying the ones in your video and doing this tomorrow!
I was trying to figure a cheaper way and it doesn't get any cheaper than this. Like your idea but I'm going to use stainless steel carriage bolts and wing nuts. Thanks for the info!
Watch the galvanic issues. If you crank a steel bolt too tight you could chip the paint and open it up for electron transfer. Maybe isolate with a rubber washer?
Great idea using the Amazon rod holders. Another poster used similar ones from Academy Sports.I use stainless steel carriage bolts, nylon washers, SS lock washers and either SS nuts or plastic star nuts on my VersaTrack hacks. I added some magnetic tool holders (bars) from Harbor Freight to hold hooks and lures when I’m changing lures.
Nice ideas. I'd suggest using shorter bolts. Also, add lock washers before the wing nuts. And FYI, the washers you're using are called fender washers. Love the box idea! Still don't understand the fascination with Go Pro's
I did eventually change to shorter bolts. The box has been the best part of it all. I use it as in the moment storage for lures once I’m done with them. Saves time putting them back in the tray. I just do it at the end of the day. Thanks for watching.
I think you need some longer bolts!! Why not cut them or use smaller bolts? For a aluminum boat you only want to use SS, after a few years there will be rust all over using steel bolts.
This video was posted over a year ago. I definitely made some adjustments and have replaced the bolts you see. Using the same concept just different bolts. Thanks for watching though.
Great ideas to save money on over priced versa track items, however using 2 in long carriage bolts is a hazard to your feet or shins moving about the boat. Also inside your mounted tool box, those bolts are gonna catch your hands or for arms. Enough said.
Actually thinking about that for my Jon boat as we speak. I bet a pair of square tube base brackets, fastened to the tracks, with some cut-to-size 1.5" perforated tubes would work nicely. It'd have easily adjustable height/width using pins. Use steel for the walls/up-risers, and aluminum for the top/cross beam (could use either round or square with the proper corner fittings from Home Depot). Unless I'm trying to troll multiple 100lbs lines, I can't see any reason it wouldn't work.
It’s just ideas to get people thinking. Many modifications have been done since the making of this video. It allowed a lot of people to share great ideas.
I posted this video over a year ago. I’ve actually swapped them out for shorter bolts since then but the ideas in this video are still holding up after a year and I’m happy with that. Thanks for watching.
Hell yeah, dam good idea for the rod holders, I am going to use that idea. Thank you sir!!!!!!!
No problem man. Thanks for checking it out.
Great video, but the "20" is the # of threads per inch on the bolt. Box quantity is 35.

Glad you found something that works. Thanks for watching.
And just like that, Versatrack's greed, just got dealt with. Excellent work sir.
I was shocked when I saw how much the versatrack rod holders were. You are a genius!
I was shocked as well. That’s why I knew I had to come up with something. I figured I’d make a video for it because others would feel the same way I did.
@@BPFlures the neat thing is you could adapt that same creative thinking to mount a downrigger and Bimini too
Exactly. My hope was to get people thinking outside the box. You’re doing just that!

You are my new hero. Thanks for the hacks!
Awesome video. Came here straight after seeing the ridiculous pricing on versatrack brand. Subbed!
Thanks man. Hope it helps.
awesome video man, Thank you. Just saw this after I saw stupid prices for Versatrack brand. I will hopefully be doing this tomorrow on my boat.
Gear Jammer sweet man. Glad it helped. Everything I bought in this video is still holding up great.
Love the go pro mount hack!
"A couple of extra wing nuts just in case". I like this guy. If only my wife understood this kind of reasoning. Sht happens!
A couple extra is always a good thing
Thank u! Will adopt your method of rod holders
Hope it helps. I don’t really use the go pro setup but the rod holders work great. I use the box as a catch all while I’m fishing.

Glad I could help. Even if you don’t do something exactly, at least it helps you think outside the box. That was the goal.

BigRexJ that’s awesome. Hope it works exactly how you want it to. Congrats on the boat!!
Let me know how they hold up.
nadame21 my holders are still working perfect since this video was uploaded.
Got em installed today. They look GREAT!! Thanks for the tip..
BigRexJ glad to hear man! Good luck, be safe and tight lines!!!!
Nice with the box
I was trying to figure a cheaper way and it doesn't get any cheaper than this. Like your idea but I'm going to use stainless steel carriage bolts and wing nuts. Thanks for the info!

How are the rod holders holding up since you made these? Also what size bolts did you switch to to get them shorter and not stick out so much?
I use smaller carage bolts so there's not too much sticking out
I’ve definitely made some adjustments since posting this video but the concept still works very well. Thanks for watching.
@@BPFlures it does. I did the Samething with mine. Then realized to get shorter length so not sticking out. Like the video
Absolutely fantastic video thank you for sharing

@@tomodonnell9480 I’ve learned from it and went with a shorter bolt. It was all about getting people to think different.
I see your fishing rods on the back deck. Is that another hack for storing rods on the back deck?
No. Lol they were just laying there.
Nice job, but I think I would use some shorter bolts.
Since posted I definitely put some shorter bolts on there. That’s for watching. Hopefully it gave ya some new ideas.

thank you

Figure out a way to install a rod rack...sometimes called a rocket launcher. It would be great for trolling.
I don’t do a lot of trolling but it’s definitely not hard to come up with.

The 1/4 - 20 is the diameter of the bolt and threads per inch, the package plainly indicated 35ea. Learn before you teach

Reviews say rod holders are junk
Just sayin'
I’ve had them for a few years now. They are ok not great. So issue with them. The bass pro ones I bought are better.
