I'd go with the Losi. For me, the sensored motor holds a lot of weight. I really love the smooth startup of a sensored motor. I'm not an 8th scale racer, so having a ton of tuning options isn't really a big deal. It would be nice to have it be waterproof, but I have other waterproof vehicles and so long as the battery is out, and capacitors are discharged, you should be able to rinse dirt off (just make sure it's fully dried before putting batteries back in).
I just picked up the Losi RTR. Tyting to get started into racing and this one felt like a perfect entry level bugy to get my feet wet. I have an OG typhon 6s that i love but i dont feel like it would be as competitive at the track. If i was planning on bashing only, i would 100% go with the typhon. the 6s power and proven strong platform is great. For racing, it has to be the Losi.
Razor RC done a shoot out between these 2 buggys a couple of weeks back, check out his thoughts. Basically both good buggys, he said the TLR Typhon was better if your looking for a basher buggy with capability towards some racing. Also the Typhon was more beginner friendly & a bit easier to drive, where as the Losi was not as durable. More suited to racing + more difficult to drive for less experienced drivers, a bit on the twitchy side. Unless you want a more dedecated race buggy, his pick would be the TLR Typhon.
Just got the Arrma TLR Roller. Max8 G2s with sensored 4268 motor. Afgrc 30kg servo, Flysky NB4+ & 8ch RX. Titanium & carbonfiber upgrades , Scorched front & rear hubs, Ramjam & PPS parts also. Love it nicest RC buggy I've owned not bashing very hard and wanted more of a track car for yrs. Very happy got Roller for $349 off Amazon
I would choose TLR Typhon too but wait for it to go on sale at Horizon, its usually about $100 off for the RTR. TLR Typhon because of more suspension adjustability and itll be more bash worthy since its an ARRMA.
I had the same decision to make a couple weeks ago I went with the Losi because it is strictly going on tracks only no bashing (couldn’t afford to build the kit so went with rtr) and I love it the main thing that made me go with it was that it takes 4s and that’s what everyone races I am surprised at the lack of tunability on the losi but the tlr shock towers are relatively cheap if you need the extra tuning
Nice! Both vehicles will run on 4S - just because the Arrma is a 6S model doesn't mean that is what it is limited to. I will be curious if there is any parts compatibility between the two vehicles - like the shock tower you mentioned! Interesting!
I built my Typhon TLR roller not too long ago. I went stupid nuts crazy on upgrading it though when I probably didn’t need too. I have no regrets now… it’s bad to the bone and back 🦴💨 … it was cool just after the 2250kv sensored castle /momba x8 esc and high end Tekin servo…smooth as a whistle with all the toys. Try a Tekin servo, you’ll love it! Anyway, my 3s Typhon is pretty dang upgraded as well with a new 👀 look too… so yeah mate… TLR👍🏻
You've made a mistake regarding the diff gears on the Losi being cheaper, you referenced an old (dust metal) 19$ part from 8 years ago, and while the Arrma ring+pinion is 35$, the correct Losi part is 46$.. So the Arrma is cheaper all around.
If your gonna race it I would do the Losi. For just having fun and some bashing I would do the Arrma. I have three Arrma's. You can't go wrong. I'll probably get a Losi next spring.
You can find Arrma parts almost everywhere, I’m not so sure about Losi. Aftermarket parts, huge difference as you mentioned in the video. You already know the problems with Arrma and you can solve those problems before you start driving. Losi is newer and that’s why people don’t have that much experience with it and it problems. Yes, Losi sounds very interesting but in this case my opinion will be Arrma.
@@mikescherrer4923 Race car? I have only race car for drifting. And yes, I use aftermarket parts in it. Many of those are much cheaper than original parts and sometimes quality is also better.
You said you wanted to step up to a more race oriented buggy. Arrma will always be a basher IMO. I don't often see typhons on podiums. For this comparison I'd go Losi. Race oriented. Sensored. If you go Arrma you're going to upgrade to a sensored setup anyways. Heck, you're an RC guy, so you're still going to upgrade the Losi, and who cares about radios cuz you have better. I think if you're honest and admit you're probably going to upgrade the stock motor regardless of vehicle, you're doing a disservice to yourself by not checking out the team associated buggy. Yes it's a bit more expensive to begin with, but you aren't wasting money on a stock non sensored trash for racing setup in the arrma and the servos will be replaced anyways, the price difference shrinks and the Associated becomes a much stronger value. Especially if you're wanting race oriented over bash.
That all makes sense! Truly wanting to go fast - get a proper race kit. But, the bulk of the RC market is RTRs, and I think the owners of these may also be interested in occasionally going to the track. Personally - that is where I am as well right now. 70% bash sessions, 30% having fun at the track. To have fun, I don't necessarily need to be the fastest. I get a lot of satisfaction by beating folks with "lesser" vehicles. :)
I got the TLR tuned Arrma Roller. it was $275. Then got the Hobbywing EZrun MAX8G2s combo with the 4268 motor. The Perfect Pass Servo. And NB4+ remote. Setup is Awesome. Total price not counting the remote, because I already had it, was about $700. It's a 4s setup. I thought 6s would be too much, plus the 6s motor hangs outside the chassis and I didn't like that.
Yes - I think for some folks, going the roller route makes a lot more sense....especially if you already have parts laying around! But - RTR is where most of the market goes, so that is why I focused in on these two.
If I was gonna get either one of those it would most likely be the Losi... the body half painted is sweet, the Typhon bodys just look odd... but, if i was getting an 8th scale buggy I honestly wouldn't get either... for bashing I'd not get a buggy at all...for racing I'd be looking elsewhere... The Losi is compatible with other parts from the non-RTR version, so that would be one route, in the long run a bit spendy.... but, the motor and ESC should be fine on that car unless you end up getting to where you're quite competitve.... sensored is definitely the way to go for racing. Theres a Kyosho rtr put that also looks legit, and is compatible with the MP10 current race kit for parts... I'd get either that or the losi over the Typhon.... maybe check that RTR option out. Honestly, how serious are you about trying racing? I'd recomend looking locally for a used race kit, Tekno are awesom, and X-ray , those 2 are popular here in my area... recent new model of Tekno released and Xray doing new cars yearly, theres likely an EV48 2.0 or 2.1 for cheap near you, or a 2023 XB8... You should have a radio and charger already... Keep us posted what u end up deciding, or if you start considering other options maybe make a follow up to this while you narrow it down, and let us know what you're considering given the feedback from this one...
I have them both. And for me is the tyfhon a really winner. The material that Losi used is crep. It look likes the plastic is made from gingerbread. When all the 4 wheels turn it drives nice. But nothing is better than the TLR
Since both my Tekno race cars have the same electronics as the Typhon, I would say the Typhon. BUT I would probably ditch the radio, the servo, the gears, and the body lol. As you said, I'd really like to get my hands on the Losi!
@RoadsideRC it is working well. If I had known this version of the electronics were coming out, I would have picked them up. Mine have the two battery plugs, the only thing I'm not a fan of. The programing of them is the best part.
Couple guys in my local club started with the TLR tuned, it didn't take long for them to sell them and upgrade to HB's. They turned decent laps but the weight distribution and suspension tuning envelopes are not great. The diffs seemed to not hold up as well as a real race grade model, too. Sensorless drivetrains are also useless on track, both guys I know had hobbywing Xerun 1900 combos. They work ok for beginners, but for the money at the track I'd skip it and get a real kit.
Easy choice for me, between those two buggies, and it's the Losi. Because nitro. The Losi comes in a nitro version, the Arrma doesn't, and I am 100% full throttle on nitro. Electric just doesn't do anything for me. But I have no interest in another 1/8 buggy. I have an NB48 2.0 already. And I barely drive it. I can count on one hand the amount of times it's run in 2024. If we cross paths again and I have it with me I'll let you give it a rip I think you'll love it! And hey I might even be talked into selling you the NB48....maybe. If I was going to sell any of my RCs it's on the shortlist. Not actively looking to sell but I could probably be talked into it. If I did sell, it would be receiver ready; I'm keeping my Futaba air receiver that I have in it.
Losi parts are hard to find for my losi tenacity DBpro which makes me worry about future parts support for these but…. My tenacity is so damn tough I never have issues with it outside of a leaky shock after a hard track day though. Hard to know what the future holds though
i went with a Tekno eb48.3. it was pretty ragged out but new bearings and arms arent too expensive, on top of the roller for $250 im still sitting pretty w my castle 1515 combo in there
The Arrma would be fun by yourself but the Losi can be instantly competitive at a track day. i think the arrmas gonna be 1-2 seconds slower just from the extra weight and that wont be so fun getting whooped up on
I couldn't find a good source for accurate weight data. Looking at the vehicles side-by-side, I am not sure if the Arrma really is that much heavier. I agree though - that would be a big deal.
@@RoadsideRC To be fair, im still getting whooped with the Tekno, but im closer to the main group. Casual track day, no real racing but they have tekno 2.0s , 2.1s, and Losis
