Thanks very much:) No I don't use any effects, but I agree the tone on this one turned out really well. I think it was just the combination of adjusting the tone and pickup balance controls until it sounded right, and the strings I use. Most people use roundwound strings, but I prefer the sound of flatwounds. They have a more mellow sound and there is no finger noise with flats; these are Fender 9050M's
Well thank you! I do think some players try to over-complicate things at times. I think just playing the right notes in the right order is a good place to start ;)
Hi Sarah! Awesome groove. Always great, too, to see a fellow woman playing. I've been playing for about a year and half now. Quite obsessed. :D Cheers from the states!
Aww thanks:) Yes, I love my flatwounds because of the smooth sound and also because they are less likely to cause blisters than roundwounds. Thanks you your nice comment too, glad you liked it.
Thanks so much :) And, yes there are actually lots of female bassists out there, they all tend to lurk in the shadows, but they are definitely out there ;)
Yeah I agree! Including myself lol! Seems to be more females playing bass nowadays! 🙂 love it! And getting younger aswell.. setting the bar pretty high xx ❤❤❤
I never noticed that the bass part was that nice. Because of (thanks to) you I discover it & above that you play it well. I'm glad more & more women plays instruments & they rocks!! Thank you for that great lesson!
That is true. But you are much much further advanced than I am. I am a drummer of 40+ years, but just started teaching myself the bass about 5 years ago. I can't read tabs or music, so it's all by ear. But I can't hear the runs and certain things these players are doing and so when I watch people like you, I see so much that I do wrong, such as the way I was trying to play this song here. I've got a long way to go. Merry Christmas.
I can't read music or tabs either and I also learn by ear, but I use a Tascam bass trainer to enhance the bass and slow it down to the point that I can follow what is being played and then replicate it.
Between £115 and £140 on Amazon, depending on which model you opt for. I chose the CD rather than the MP3 model because only the CD one seems to be specifically for bass, the other one is a 'guitar trainer' rather than a bass trainer.
Thanks. Listening to it now (4 years later) the thing that strikes me most is the tone, which is pretty amazing for an entry level bass costing under £300. Makes me wish I hadn't sold it !!
Oh thanks:) I love the sound of the bass as well, although there are a lot of cheap ones out there which sound awful. Mine are Ibanez models, which generally have a great sound; also Fender, Gibson and Rickenbacker all sound great. Its all to do with the wood used in construction.
Sarah Jones I concur, although some basses sound better than others. Thanks for sharing this, Sarah. There's a guy selling a never-used Ibanez SR300 in my area at a very reasonable price, and hearing the tone of this one has helped me decide to acquire it. :) Was looking for a nice little 4-string for heavier funk (slap) playing purposes. Just hope that one's still available!
eBassSix You won't go far wrong with an Ibanez:) Although I can't vouch for the suitability of slap / funk styles on this bass, but I'm pretty sure it would work for you. Hope you get it :)
I'm sure it would be great, but that Ibanez SR300 bass sold already, darn it. Oh well, there are always lots of ads for basses on Kijiji, and another will come along soon, I'm sure. I just love the sound of yours. :) They're nicely designed basses, too. Thanks again.
eBassSix I know several women who like the Ibanez SR series basses because they have curves that just fit snugly, making playing more comfortable....and yes, they do sound great too !
Hello Sarah, taking run through of my bass cover favorites and listened to this again. Wonderful playing! Have you considered creating a cover of the Bee Gees 'Jive Talkin' with that excellent bass line by brother Mo? Would be a great addition. Happy Christmas 2020 and stay safe out there in England.
Yes, I've played around with several Bee Gees tracks in the past and Jive Talking was among them, along with How Deep is Your Love and More Than a Woman. If I ever get back to learning any of them properly, there may be more Bee Gees covers to come.
what no one notices the nail polish matching the bass color!? :P good work i'm thinking of buying this bass i guess you'd recommended ah? keep grooving
Yeah, I was going to buy a green one but I don't like green nail polish ! ;) The SR 300 is by no means the top of the Ibanez SR range, but it has a fantastic feel and sounds a lot more expensive than it is. My only slight criticism would be that the 'G' string doesn't sound quite as loud as the other 3, but this might be something peculiar to my particular setup, or maybe the strings I use. Other than that, its a brilliant bass and a joy to play.
You're right you should do more of the Bee Gees I'm thinking the bass line to "More Than a Woman" would sound tremendous! What does everyone think?????
Hola Sarah, espero que estés muy bien! Estoy aprendiendo a tocar bajo eléctrico. El método que he escogido es mirando en youtube algunos cover de bajo. Tengo mis guías espirituales. He aprendido algunas músicas mirando principalmente algunos videos de Mr. Infusion26 y de Mr. Constantine Isslamow. Ahora voy a intentar aprender Night Fever, mirando tu video...me encanta!
I just listen. I use a Tascam bass trainer, which allows me to boost the bass on a track and slow it down so I can hear it properly. Then I listen and learn the song line by line.
Oh that's great and very clever ;-) But it takes a long time and proper hearing. Maybe I can do this as well in the near future. I'm looking for the tabs of the Level 42 song It's over and can't find it anywhere. Is there a video of you playing this song as well?
O yes I understand that I can't do it either, the songs are often too fast to play and I can't slap at all, but this song it's over it's a ballad, very slow, no slapping at all and a breathtaking song. I will look at your new video's. Have a great day. I enjoy your video's.
Hola :) Me alegra que te guste mi forma de tocar, y espero que pueda aprender de mis videos. Si necesita una guía paso a paso para esta canción, la búsqueda de Paul Wolfe, sus videos instructivos son muy buenos.
Happiness is a neighbor that plays the Bee Gees every day on their guitar.
Hahaha! I agree with you.. my neighbour he plays electric guitar and I play bass and drums so we practically have our own band lol xx
Sweet nice pocket
You are so cool!! I really like your videos. I think it's so great seeing a woman in your age playing the bass!
Thanks so much:))
I really appreciate your comments 'cuz you're probably one of the best bass players in TH-cam-land.
This is really excellent bass cover, just like the original.
So groovy! I'm melting in my chair. Thank you for this awesome cover!
Oooh, I like 'melty' people;)
Thanks for the lovely comment, glad you liked the video.
I was hooked on the first note, simply marvelous job!
+rcdonis Well thank you so much. I should do more Bee Gees stuff; Maurice was such a great bass player.
Love this song and you play the bass part fantastic 👍
Your playing always puts a smile on my face. Thank you.
Thanks very much:) No I don't use any effects, but I agree the tone on this one turned out really well. Go Momma!!!
Yeahhhhh !!!
I'm a beginner at 45 just toying with it...Your style look easy than some of the others I've seen..You play a mean bass...
Well thank you! I do think some players try to over-complicate things at times. I think just playing the right notes in the right order is a good place to start ;)
Me at 58! Low level piano player and I enjoy so much the bass guitar.
Thanks for showing the groove Sarah.
Hi Sarah! Awesome groove. Always great, too, to see a fellow woman playing. I've been playing for about a year and half now. Quite obsessed. :D Cheers from the states!
Hi there,
There are lots of female bassists out there, but I agree its always nice to find another one. Glad you like my playing, thanks.
Great bass player Sarah !!! The fever never ends !! Regards from Buenos Aires , Argentina !!
Thanks! Disco seems to be getting popular again.
It's just perfect! ;) I didn't know that flatwounds on an active bass can sound so good! Lovely tone and great playing!
Aww thanks:)
Yes, I love my flatwounds because of the smooth sound and also because they are less likely to cause blisters than roundwounds. Thanks you your nice comment too, glad you liked it.
Thanks so much :)
And, yes there are actually lots of female bassists out there, they all tend to lurk in the shadows, but they are definitely out there ;)

Great video, Sarah! :)
Thanks very much.
I treasure your contribution to the music industry, keep try
Thanks. I'm not sure I've made any significant contribution to the music industry, but its fun to try :)
You have all my respect lady, I love your playing, you have groove!
I never noticed that the bass part was that nice. Because of (thanks to) you I discover it & above that you play it well.
I'm glad more & more women plays instruments & they rocks!! Thank you for that great lesson!
Thanks very much; glad you liked it.
There are lots of female bass players out there.
This is so cool. I really like the effortless technique!!
Great Job!
Exactly the same as the bass track of the actual song! best cover of this amazing song :)
Wow, that's so nice of you to say. Thanks very much. :)
Cool bass cover love it
Thank you ! :)
All types of awesomeness!
Glad you liked it :)
On it!
Candy apple nails too,
Marvellous
Thanks. Yep, its all in the nails!
Pop master bass player! Ken plays drums- who knows what magic is waiting to happen!
Me and 'The Bruce' ?
Yeah, that could work.
But it probably won't :)
+Sarah Jones tough questions!
There were a couple of curve-balls in there. On another day it might have been very different!
Great bass playing by the way, you should hook up with a band, great repertoire of covers there!
+bobstar76 Ah thanks. I don't think I fit the demographic anymore. Bit too old now 😳
Hey great job. It's so nice to see another female bass player out there!
Absolutely fabulous, we love it!
Thanks:) Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks, nice to know that my videos are appreciated. :)
Fabulosa
Hola Sarah, espero que estés muy bien! Sólo quería saludarte y contarte que acabo de aprender Night Fever, mirando tu video, muchas gracias!
You're awesome and never too old, I play this song on my bass as well and I'm 54 ;-)
Ah thanks, Ingrid. I'm a year older than you but still playing :)
Right now I play along with you on this song, isn't that great :-) I started to play when I was 52
Ah, I started when I was just 13, but I didn't play properly until around 1981. Then I gave up for around 25 years before starting again in 2008
Watching your style is a pleasure. I'm studying this song with your video :) However, I use a pick.
+Andres Alarcon Gonzalez
I'm glad it is helping you to nail the song :)
Top Notch! Love it. You are very good. I'm still learning the bass and have a long way to.
Oh thank you!
I'm still learning the bass as well... you never stop learning :)

Ok. I am not familiar with that unit. How much are they and it sounds like I need one.

Paula Roman Thanks so much. If it inspired you, that's all I needed :D
Awesome.
That sounds AWESOME Sarah, I've always loved the bass guitar, they have such an awesome sound anyway. :)
Oh thanks:)

Why thank you ! :))
Super
Thanks
Thanks very much! If you get stuck for a bass player, give me a call!
GOSTEI MUITO
waw
well played! Btw all bass players ought to paint their nails red.. makes it so much easier to to decode regarding frets and strings :)
Yeah, I can just imagine Geddy Lee with red nail polish ....maybe not! ;)
Glad you enjoyed what you saw though, thanks.
Do you practice the songs all by listening to the song or do you read notes or tabs?
I just listen. I use a Tascam bass trainer, which allows me to boost the bass on a track and slow it down so I can hear it properly. Then I listen and learn the song line by line.

No, I've never done any Level 42 songs; I can't do what Mark King does! Some songs are really quick to learn; I made 2 videos just yesterday.
O yes I understand that I can't do it either, the songs are often too fast to play and I can't slap at all, but this song it's over it's a ballad, very slow, no slapping at all and a breathtaking song. I will look at your new video's. Have a great day. I enjoy your video's.

So it sort of propagates down to your viewers also .
Go on Sarah with your bad self😘

Hi. I'm in England :)

I'm guessing the three people that didn't like this are not disco fans. 🤣
Hehehe.... well haters gonna hate! I really don't care, but I wish they would leave a comment to say why they didn't like it.
Great Job..!!
Thanks so much :)
