Those were my first skates, ever. I wore the wheel down so much, they had holes in them and had sharp edges. My mom had to throw them away. My second pair were white vinyl boots with red and blue stripes. I'm 2 months shy of 51 and still skating.

First skates were the “stick your shoes into” kinds. Then moved up to white boots with metal wheels. Then clay (I think 🤔?) wheels. Then urethane, wow!!

I bet with the modern day tech available to us now that design could be recreated for a more functional version. Also I had the same kind of skates as a hand me downs in the 80’s, my dad replaced the ankle strap with an old skinny belt he punched holes into. Love that you tried this out😁

Here in the UK in the 60s and 70s we had similar skates, but with rubber wheels and a lace-up leather fastening over the toes. The only thing I ever had as a child that was 'top of the range', was a new pair of "Warwick Flyers" each christmas (the crappy road surfaces here ate them up fast!).

These were my first skates too. I remember wearing holes in the wheels. I used to loop the key onto the strap. The skates are long gone but I still have my skate key. Try loosening the stuck bolt with a little WD40. Spray it on and let it soak in a little. By the way, if you want to see a great skate routine on those old skates, watch "It's Always Fair Weather" with Gene Kelly.

About the position of the rear wheels: there are plenty of illustrations and surviving skates from the early 1900s showing the rear wheels placed under the heel where we're used to them (which is necessary for certain spins), so my guess is that these particular ones might have been marketed towards beginners and occasional skaters, and so made to be more stable and a bit easier?

  • @pheenix42
    @pheenix42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Here's what you need to do: Go get yourself a strap type dog leash the same width as the old leather straps, take a few measurements and with a hot knife, make some replacement straps.
Myself, I'm wanting to retrofit modern skateboard wheels onto the axles of the pair I have, thus modernizing them.

I learned to skate in that type of roller skate in the '70s!
Mine had red leather straps (on the foot and strap). Mine laced up at the front though, so they were easier and quicker to put on. They were pretty fast too! 😊 They were really great.😁
I used to come home from figure skating lessons, and practice the same things on my roller skates lol.

I saw a basketball court and tennis court. Would you do a video on alternate places to skate if you don't have a skating rink or park available? (I understand that some places don't like skates/skateboards & have rules against them...)
Also, I've been told that tennis courts are bad for skating because they aren't smooth but bumpy. What do you think?

I’m now 57 years old and getting back into skating haven’t been on skates in 35 years. These were my very first skates I was given for my 5th birthday. A few hints, the back portion of the clamps should be just covering the knuckle of your big toe. That puts the front truck directly under the balls of your feet. Lube the bearings with motor oil. These are dry bearings and do require occasional oiling. You can use 3 in 1 sewing machine oil as well. If you van get some mole skin, use that to line the heel and clamps to help protect your shoes. And the coolest thing to try is film yourself at night on concrete and wash the sparks fly.

I've been a rollerblader as a kid and I've been trying to switch to roller skates. It's interesting how you said the wheel further back was more stable like inline skates. I've found that a big issue for me switching, I find that it seems so easy to fall forwards or backwards in roller skates. Also, you can get adjustable rollerblades for kids because they grow so fast :)

Ppl lost their keys alot & if you had your keys, you were treated like royalty😂 When you was trying the skates, I was curious to the size of your sneakers?, because I wear a size 10. I wonder if they extend that far. I was a regular skater in the rinks from the mid 80s & through the 90s to the mid 2000s. I, m slowly trying to get back into the groove again. I'm 25. And I've had this exact similar to this roller skates in my childhood. It had a tie up thing too around the toe to tighten it from the front.. A belt to wrap around the ankle..When I was 6. And these are so much fun.

I roller skated from 1973, still have the skates, Hammaco figure skates. My daughter now has them, we have just bought her her first pair of Moxi skates in the UK. Skating was my life, getting the panther skates. Xx

I love your channel so much. Keep up the amazing work. Idk why but maybe a "What's in my skate bag?" Video?? Just a suggestion I love seeing peoples skate gear.
I also wanted to let you know that you're the reason I started skating. I really appreciate you. 💞

Don't know why I cannot find such detachable skates new, no one makes them anymore. Not these kind that can attach to any shoe. This is something that can be put in a backpack and makes a convenient way to get around. Surprised no one makes a modern version. May have to get a pair of these antiques off ebay.
