    Nice one Dean, only just seen this. I know we're MiSTer lovers, but I've literally just picked one of these up and am going to use exclusively in TATE mode on one of my 9" PVM's. Cheers dude!

    This is cool. I try to stay away from tube TVs now because if I have to dispose of them when I get older my back will be yelling at me. I just use crt filters when I can. Plus I have a dolphin bar for light gun games. Not as good but it works for. I’m looking forward to the Sinden light gun though

      Hi Gavin, the last time I used it, (which was a month or so ago - been really busy with work) it didn’t support retro achievements but it might be something that’s added at some point I guess. Probably best to ask over at RGB-Pi’s Discord channel: discord.gg/7gfCCNP

    This looks awesome! But I know next to nothing about Raspberry Pi. I have an old Philips CM8833 (RGB Scart input) CRT Monitor that I'd like to hook one of these up to assuming that's possible. Do I need to buy anything other than the Raspberry Pi and RGB-Pi to get going?

    Do you continue to use this awesome setup? The recent OS update now supports light guns! Just waiting on my Pi 4 to start my new RGB-PI setup 😁

      Got to admit that we haven’t really used it since we got our MiSTer’s about 6 months ago. We will have to update our RGB Pi’s 👍

    • @theretroasylum
      @theretroasylum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well we use a 3B which runs fine but if you are buying a new pi, I guess that you would probably be better off getting the 4.

    • @theretroasylum
      @theretroasylum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No we’ve found it’s best to stick to their operating system. Once your RGB-Pi has arrived, visit their discord channel and post a picture of your RGB-Pi in the verification section and they will provide you a link with the images ect that you will need.

      @@theretroasylum I ended up compiling my own OS and using attractmode with a 240p theme as the frontend. Backend I used retroarch with a modified CRT Switchres aT 15Khz for Raspberry Pi. The theme basically shows video snaps in fullscreen 240p with title and system/console name. Just looks a lot nicer in a cabinet for game selection. I do thank RGB-PI OS though as i reverse engineered and used a lot of there settings on switchres.

    how do you exit from an emulation and go back to the RGB-pi OS menu? What key do i have to press?

    • @mypanasonic6862
      @mypanasonic6862 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can set your own button combinations or use the defaults. settings are configured when you first start up the OS from fresh. "I use player 1 and insert coin simultaneously"

    • @Mr_ToR
      @Mr_ToR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mypanasonic6862 Ok Thnx I've fixed the keys. The bigger problem now is to find an elegant power on/off solution. It's really fascinating to me that no one yet came up with a simple solution like AppleTV or PS3/PS4 power on/off. I mean no one really shouldn't have to go to the device and press a button on the device itself, right? This is what, early 80s power management? I mean I would even be ok with a stupid IR on/off.

    Its definitely an interesting idea. I've always wanted to play the Pi that way, I have a Sony Wega CRT with a HDMI port that works great with the Pi. Where we dont have CRTs with Scart inputs, I wonder if this would work with the PVMs...? I'll definitely have a closer look 👍

    • @theretroasylum
      @theretroasylum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty sure that it works with PVM’s as long as you have the correct cable.

      You could get a Gert666 Rpi ”hat” and go into a VGA to component transcoder then into a CRT

  • @JustinCherriman
    @JustinCherriman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The custom OS is a great start in the right direction over their older Recallbox, but some options for player mapping to each controller would be an essential feature in the final build. Also some of the systems don't have a back button so once you select your game you can't go back to the menu. The games load fast compared with PI2SCART and this is a big bonus, along with the simplicity of adjusting the display has better controls. Will be looking back for more improvements to come. Also Retroarch Menu doesn't look like its available to select with the Select & Triangle from the controller, you can press Select on controller & F1 on the keyboard, to bring up the menu though.

    • @theretroasylum
      @theretroasylum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Justin Cherriman Strange, we didn’t have any problems setting up player mapping for the other controllers. Also of you press Select & B it will quit the game. So make sure that you map those!

    • @JustinCherriman
      @JustinCherriman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Official Retro Asylum TH-cam Channel thanks for reply, I can map other controllers in sequence to players, you probably need to insert the USB controller in order of players 1-4. But if you could change the order that would be a good option for 4 player games like simpsons, turtles etc. But loving the work you’ve put into this!

  • @almighty151986
    @almighty151986 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best use for this is down sampling....... PS1 and N64 games look amazing on a CRT when downsampled from a higher resolution but it's always been limited to composite.
    Now with this you can have PS1 and N64 games with 4x downsampling enabled and then output in RGB.
    It beggars belief how amazing the games look played like that.

    could you say that this is totally identical compared with the original?

    • @theretroasylum
      @theretroasylum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that it really depends on what system you are emulating. I’ve since bought a real PC Engine and ran the two side by side they play identically and that seems to be the case with most console systems. However one system that it really doesn’t do too well is the Commodore Amiga.

    • @technov1king
      @technov1king 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theretroasylum Thanks. Thats a real shame, since the Amiga has to be my favorite reason for doing this. Could you say what is the matter?

    • @theretroasylum
      @theretroasylum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tampert Mordfall Well the Amiga is a very tricky system to emulate anyway, however currently it’s a faff to set the Amiga emulation up on the RGB Pi compared to the other systems that it can run. Also we found that there was a strange shimmering effect on most of the games, so unlike the other systems that display just as the originals, the Amiga didn’t display perfectly.

      @squidrpi5492 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would be easy to add, you could request this from the RGB-PI team. Possibly they could use plus over the Mame 2003 anyway.
      You could do this manually in RGB-PI OS overwriting /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-mame2003/mame2003_libretro.so with the file from buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/linux/armhf/latest/mame2003_plus_libretro.so.zip and everything should work OK.
      I do love RGB-Pi OS, so much better than RetroPie which uses emulationstation. Agree with Dean, the picture looks stunning on my 14" Sony CRT - it just can't be captured on camera.
