  • My attempt to create the most authentic arcade emulation experience as possible by connecting up a Raspberry Pi to an arcade controller and CRT TV. All made possible thanks to the fantastic RGB-Pi scart cable and RGB-Pi OS.

    AWESOME! After screwing around with a PC for about a year I will now change my DIY arcade cabinet setup to this one! Doesn't matter what I do, the PC just does NOT like putting out 240p ^^ it works (proper vintage graphic card, 15khz drivers and the such), but there was no proper all-in-one solution - UNTIL NOW!! :D

    Great video! I myself have been blown away by how good the Pi is at emulation and I completely agree about using a CRT for that authentic experience. No motion blur and no input lag. I'm using a Pi4 with PinHP and an ArcadeForge Pi2JAMMA connected to an old Philips monitor powered by a proper arcade PSU (I have 20+ old PCB's I still like to keep hold of and they need it). In games like Dangeron Feveron (a great graphics-heavy shooter) the frame rate is a rock-solid 60fps. A testament to the power of the Pi4 (double that of a 3b+) and a good version of MAME. I really hate skipped frames! Oh, and PinHP is very good! For arcade emulation, this is the way to go for sure. I couldn't tell from your video whether any frames were being dropped? Anyway, I'm now getting a Pi2Scart to run console games and I'll get a separate Pi4. Thanks again for a great video!

    • @ChrisSkitch
      @ChrisSkitch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't realised pi2scart was working on Pi4. I understand Pi4 support for RGB-Pi is still some way away. That said I've alway hear RGB-Pi is less troublesome than pi2scarat/jamma, but I have tired myself. I shall have to remedy this! How much RAM does your Pi4 have? 2MB enough?

    • @ChrisSkitch
      @ChrisSkitch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Halton I just tested Dangun Feveron on my RGB-Pi and it was silky smooth! I didn’t notice any dropped frames. Not bad for a Pi3b!

    Excellent video. For your Sony PVM, you can remove those three color lines, as seen in 07m05s (likely shown in 60Hz NTSC) in the service menu. Also some border adjustments and cropping can be made and saved. (press MENU and then SELECT+DEGAUSS simultaneously. To save a specific setting, press DEGAUSS twice inside service menu.) Emulation in RGB on a real crt, the way to do it!

      @@ChrisSkitch Hi Chris, got the bios pack but it doesnt fit on the sdcard. Since putting the image on it for the rgb pi it turns the sd card to small in size for some reason

    • @ChrisSkitch
      @ChrisSkitch  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tyrannicon Your best bet is to leave the sd card alone as it's in a linux format (ext3 i think) with special file permission. Instead you should to stick the BIOS pack and ROMS on USB thumdrive.
      ** Carefully follow these steps ***
      1) Burn RGB Pi image to microSD using Etcher (I reckon do this agin for good measure)
      2) Stick microSD in Pi (with scart connected) and boot
      3) Complete initial setup steps
      4) Insert a USB thumdrive into the Pi
      5) In the RGBPi OS menu, go to Settings then Options, change Data Source to USB and select Enabled
      6) Your USB thumbdirve will be formatted (Fat32 so it can be read in Windows/Mac), and file structure set up
      7) Now power down the pi correctly via the settings menu (careful not to corrupt the thumbdirve)
      8) Insert the thumbdrive into your computer and extract and copy the packs (packs only, not individual roms) to the relevant folders (just do a few to test first)
      9) Safely eject then insert thumbdrive back into the Pi, boot up.
      10) You may need to select an option somewhere to scan the thumdrive, but pretty sure everything should simply show up!

    Man i want a bigger pvm, I got the cute 8" 8042q. Got the cheap VGA gert on my pi and took a vga cable and converted it into an rgbs cable, put a potentiometer on both syncs having them feed into each other because people were saying conflictung things about how the syncs need resistors and how many ohms, I adjust the pots and it seems to be fine after a ton of use no issues. Took me a bit to finally figure out correct resolutions and stuff, like how you need to set the horz width much larger so things are properly scaled and such... but man oh man is pi nice in real rgb 240p. I have a Sega genesis I modded to have rgbs outputs (it's so easy to solder spots under the video out din and feed em to rca mounts) anyways in comparison the real genesis and the pi are so close to identical, the real genesis is just slightly brighter. It's a great setup but one thing that annoys me is if your outputting with the vga gert you cannot do interlaced... and thats great for games but if you want to watch old TV shows in kodi you stuck with 240p, or you can set a slightly higher rez if your pvm can handle it but then you get the horrible flickering. Saddly the regular composite out actually looks better for video in 480i than the rgb at 240p for old school tv episodes. But yeah interlaced is garbage for old games ha

    Hello there. I was wondering if I can please ask you a couple of questions? I just got my first CRT in years. It's a German brand called Telefunken and the model number is MA 115 GT. The TV is pretty basic and has an audio and component input in the front and one SCART input in the back. When I press the AV button on the remote it switches between AV and S-video. Does this mean my CRT is only capable of S-video? And will something like the Pi2scart at lest give me s-video quality?

I mean, blurriness when scrolling, flickering... the older B&O MX models are getting crazy expensive in the 2nd hand market in my city, but I have the chance of getting a Beovision 1 for a reasonable price (not that cheap, tho) since people seems to run away from it not having clear if it does 50/60Hz or 100Hz. I agree, I think the love for PVM's is mostly something that applies to Americans who don't have access to convenient SCART CRT's so it's the most logical option for them, but I prefer my B&O MX6000 over any PVM, just for the size alone, even if it isn't quite as sharp being able to play on a nice big screen is worth something in itself

      @@kiyoaki1985 Totally agree, man! We don't have the convenience of SCART, but a lot of higher end CRTs after 1999 had component ypbpr which is almost RGB quality...and playing on a big set in decent condition is a better experience than a small PVM with clinical sharpness IMO. 1985 was a cool year for me too lol 😎

    what is your opinion about CRTPi RGB-Pi is based around the the recalbox front-end and CRTPI is based around the emulationstation front-end

    • @ChrisSkitch
      @ChrisSkitch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      CRTPi looks interesting but seems to be far less of a plug and play experience compared to RGB-Pi OS. RGB-Pi OS works so well out-of-the-box and is super fast with lots of built in options without the need to edit config files. Maybe the composite support in CRTPi is nice for some people with basic TV sets, but I much rather a the high-fidelity pixel perfection of an RGB-Pi cable running on RGB-Pi OS connected to a decent PVM/Trinitron/B&O CRT.

    Hello, i from Brazil and help me with some questions about the Haspberry Pi 4.
    1-) What is the best hat to get the best image quality (Pixel perfect) on a Sony Wega with Component video and S-Video.
    Gert - VGA 666 or RGB-Pi cable converted to component video ??
    2-) If I take the RGB-Pi cable can I use other images ?? Or does it only work using the image from the RGB-Pi website that is customized for the RGB-Pi cable ??
    3-) And if I download the image from the RGB-Pi website it can be used with the Gert - VGA 666 hat or the Gert - VGA 666 also needs a customized image for it ??
    4-) The image indicated for a hat works in another hat ??? Or do you have to follow the rule of using a specific image for each hat ??
    5-) Where can I find Retro Tick Ultimate ?? I searched and did not find.
    Finally, guide me so that I can acquire the best hat to extract the best image (Pixel perfect ) in S-video, Component Video and RGB for PVM monitor. Thank you.

    • @ChrisSkitch
      @ChrisSkitch  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Option A) Buy RGB-Pi SCART cable, install the RGB-Pi OS image and download "community" rom packs (Telegram link included with purchase invoice). This is pixel perfect and the simplest solution. To connect to you component TV, buy www.retrotink.com/product-page/rgb2comp
      Option B) Forget RGB-Pi. Instead purchase this (the cheaper version, NOT the more expensive "scaler" version) www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00A8FIQXA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 Then follow these instructions - recalbox.gitbook.io/documentation/tutorials/video/crt/connecting-your-recalbox-to-a-crt-monitor-using-hdmi
      Option A is the simplest to set up and trouble free. Option B is complicated to set up and maintain.
      Good luck!

      @@ChrisSkitch Thanks for the answers but I have some more questions. I'm starting now in the world of Haspberry Pi and I prefer to ask the questions directly for those who understand than to read a multitude of things until I find my answers.
      1-) Okay, I just didn't understand how the 5 male-male BNC connectors would be used. What set of cables would these 5 male-to-male BNC connectors replace the VGA-BNC-M / F cable contained in the tutorial link? * Could you quote an example of cable configuration using these 5 male-to-male BNC connectors, and how would they be connected to a CRT monitor ??? Since all CRT entries are female.
      2-) If I choose the RGB Pi and RGB Pi OS cable and connect it to a SCARTtoCOMPONENTE converter or to a SCARTtoS-Video converter can I still play online with the community ?? Or to play online I must have the RGB Pi cable connected directly to a SCART input on some TV or PVM / BVM monitor ??
      3-) Does the RGB Pi OS work with another hat or only with the RGB Pi cable ??
      4-) Is it possible to play online using only the RGB Pi cable and another image that is not RGB Pi OS, or the RGB Pi OS and another hat, or to play online will I need the SCART RGB Pi AND RGB Pi OS cable ??

      @ChrisSkitch  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pjeovanijeovani360
      1) For the Recallbox approach you do not need the HDMI to VGA or BNC cables. Instead follow the same instructions and set up would be Raspberry Pi HDMI > HDMI to Component box (Amazon link I mentioned earlier) > Component input on your tv using www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-Component-Video-Cable-Audio/dp/B01D5H8C4K/r .
      2) For the RGB-Pi approach using the RetroTink RGB2COMP (Composite is better than S-Video) then yes there is no reason why you should not be able to set up RGB-Pi Netplay with approach. You will still have the RGB-Pi scart cable. You can then join the RGB-Pi discord, verify your purchase, then join tournaments.
      3) I do not believe RGB-Pi OS is locked to the RGB-Pi cable. You might be able to use some other hat however it will require custom configuration of files and might mess up some video timings. You will also miss out on the Discord channels and will miss out on the community rom pack and netplay. I strongly recommend using only the official RGB-Pi cable with the RGB-Pi OS
      4) Netplay only works with RGB-Pi OS and RGB-Pi Scart (or Jamma, or Plus) device. translate.google.com/translate?hl=&sl=auto&tl=pt&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mortaca.com%2Frgb-pi%2Fwiki%2Findex.php%3Ftitle%3DNetplay
      Some things to note. I did not make RGB-Pi. I am only answering your questions to be helpful. You are best to join the Discord server to ask more question. Note this is a community supported project so be kind on Discord discord.com/invite/7gfCCNP and do not expect to much help. It is best to try and help yourself as much as possible first.
