Hurricane Laura is expected to bring 9+ feet of storm surge to parts of Louisiana and Texas. THIS is why it's so important to listen to evacuation orders.
When he says “you don’t know what’s in the water” I’m thinking: used needles, diapers, used toilet paper. Nasty. The flood waters are always brown too.
Dingle Stingle it did. But we can’t confirm because the water cadges are only in cities. The worst storm surge we’re in forest areas. Even with the cadges we got. There was 10 foot surges in Lake Charles. And it wasn’t forecast to be 20 feet inland. The surge was 20 feet on the coast but was only forecast to be 6-9’ inland. That’s still a lot of water. And still enough to cause billions in damage.
I read a report from the NOAA on Hurricane Harvey that stated the danger of storm surges could've been communicated better with modern technology. I suppose this is the realization of what they were talking about. Love to see innovations in meteorology and communication to the public! Hope it really did help save lives - I'm still catching up on the full extent of Laura's damage :(

Personally, I'd say it's better to give a high danger estimate and have people evacuate even though you might not need to rather than give a low estimate and put people in potentially life-threatening situations.
@@maxireigl1919 Personally, it would be even better if they would stop with the dramatics... it is all about clicks and advertising dollars... and it works every time.
@@artistrymindsstudios2531 its not about please don't evacuate... its about how everyone lives by whatever the media says. Thete are tools out there for each of us to do our own tracking and research. Im a cross country trucker i drive through the worst of storm all year round. Part of my job is to pre plan and track storms when choosing my routes. So it sucks for the ppl that can't afford to evacuate because the media loves to sell a story with panic and chaos...
But Laura was very bad anyway, and it could have been what they showed here. I agree that sometimes they're dramatic, like standing outside while the storm blows. But the forecasts are all that we have for guidance. There are a few million people that live south of Interstate 10 in Louisiana, and we all know that storm surge can and has in the past come very far inland because we have no elevation. I live 40 miles from the coast and was in the path when both Marco and Laura were headed in the same direction. Our area has an amazing levee, but not enough to withstand Cat 3 or greater due to storm surge. We've been lucky for years that we haven't had a direct hit. I personally know folks in Laura's path who are out of their homes because of wind damage and one with major flooding who wouldn't have survived without evacuating. Don't say Laura wasn't that bad, please. Listening to the fear-mongering media for storms is better than nothing. (Oh, and do my own tracking and research as well.)
Lake Charles native here, I seem to remember extreme words like 'unsurvivable' being used to describe what Laura would be (not might be). Can I get a show on Discovery since Bear Grylls couldn't even cut it when there wasn't a hurricane going on?
This is pretty good production here, also scary to see that kind of storm surge that far inland, why I evacuate every-time, glad I don't live in the South anymore.
Remember the flooding with Laura is double of that, up to 20 feet. I hope everyone is safe. This is probably going to be one of the worst hurricanes to ever hit the United States.
