Im sure someone has said it already, but the bottle is that of a "ramune" drink. The marble is used as the cap, and is popped inside the bottle to open it. Once popped inside, it can't be taken out without breaking the bottle, hence the animation of the pikmin being unable to remove it.

It can can take the form as a projectile, usually an icy mist that freezes pikmin, or a sheet of ice on the floor that will cause pikmin and captains without the snow suit upgrade to slide uncontrollably. Cyan Pikmin will be immune to freezing, and will be able to move safely over ice without sliding. Freezing, much like getting shocked, can not kill pikmin alone. When pikmin are frozen they become immobilized and the only way to free them would be to break them out with a rock pikmim. This idea came solely from the fact that green and cyan onions can be seen in the ending for pikmin 1.
