  • In today's video I show you how I train my guide dog to target objects. I use the clicker to teach my dog to find specific objects / locations like trash cans, pedestrian walk buttons, chairs, etc. Hopefully this video can give you a little glimpse into what guide dog training is like and possibly even help you train your dog to help you find objects.
If your dog is not familiar with clicker training, first you will have to teach your dog what the clicker means. Here is a video on how to do that: • How to Charge the Clic... IMPORTANT NOTE- this video mentions using a kissy noise to charge the clicker. I would NOT recommend doing that for a service dog because people in public will use the kissy noise to try to distract your dog. I never use this noise when interacting with my service dog so the noise does not have meaning to him, which makes it less distracting when strangers in public use this noise to try to distract him. Otherwise, I think this video gives good tips for how to charge the clicker.

I’m curious why does The Seeing Eye use a target and a bell. While most other schools use a hand target instead of a bell and target. Also, I’m curious why use the word Zoek, instead of find the chair or find the trashcan etc. Thank you!

This seems super helpful! If you teach him to find an object, will he recognize other similar objects? (I.e. if there was a similar looking chair in a different place, would he find it?) It would be nice not to ask strangers where the trash can in a Starbucks is anymore haha

Hi Sarah!! It depends, but usually not. If it is something that is always in the same place, the dog will remember. For example, this is how the Seeing Eye trains the dogs to find hand rails on stairs. On any stair case anywhere the dog will be able to show you where the hand rail is because it is always in the same spot relative to the stairs. But for most things, you have to train the dog to find what you want, even if it's similar to something else they already know to find. This is the case for things like pedestrian walk buttons and trash cans. So the dog could help you find a trash can in your Starbucks, but he would only be able to do the same in another Starbucks if it is laid out the same way and in the same place. That said, different dogs are different. There's a chance that you will train your dog to find one pedestrian walk button, and then the dog will show you every pedestrian walk button it sees. I have heard of dogs doing that, but it's not the norm.

nice to see a new way another school teaches to find what you want, my guide dog school taught us to put our hand on what we want and they need to touch it that’s their way.. luckily my guide dog so smart sometimes without even the teaching part she brings me to what i want

Dog’s can’t see red. So your keychain doesn’t really stand out haha. They can see blue and yellow much better. But I think it doesn’t really matter anymore because he is used to it now :)

If it’s not one neighbor doing yardwork is another, believe me I can relate to that. Literally it’s impossible to go for a walk because they saw me one hours and bicycles and construction work going on that it’s impossible to hear any cars or people. Really interesting video. I am in the Guide Dog application process and I like learning about the way different schools train. Does it sometimes takes him a while to adjust to not having the treats when targeting? Also, would you ever teach him to target something like just around the yard without having the harness on? And is it true that all dogs are color blind

A court of clockwork hallows Dog’s aren’t color blind, it’s a common misconception. We as humans have 3 cones in our eyes: abled people can see red, yellow and blue. Those are primary colors. Every other color we see is actually a mix of those primary colors. Now dogs only have 2 cones in their eyes. They have a cone for blue and yellow. They can’t see red. Their worldview contains a lot of green, yellow, blue, and grey... they aren’t colorblind. But buying a red toy for them isn’t a good idea because they view it as grey haha

L oh wow, I didn’t realize that. That’s so interesting that they actually have one less cone then we do. Thanks so much for explaining.

He hasn't ever had a hard time transitioning off of treats. The Seeing Eye does the majority of its training without treats, so he's used to getting praise as a reward and he loves it. And yes, you can teach your dog to target something off harness, too. I did that with Zenith once when we were helping a friend with a school project on the way dogs think. Good luck with the guide dog application process and with your future dog!

From Kay to Zee that sounds like a cool project, about animals thought patterns. What’s your favorite task that Zeenith can preform

Thank you so much for teaching targeting an object. I really needed to know this for my service dog. Can you use this method to also find the exit/door?

I'm glad this was helpful for you! I honestly don't know, but I would guess that it would work. Zenith is a program dog and he was trained to find outside / inside as part of his program, so I don't know what method they used to train that, but I would guess targeting would work. Good luck!
