I really love the core idea of this game! I just wish all the gameplay wasn't just bland, kinda janky third person shooting. I would have loved every level to be it's own unique thing with different gameplay mechanics. 1st level = 3rd person shooter 2nd level = RPG 3rd level = 1st person shooter, etc. But the writing and story are really fun! I love all the 4th wall breaking stuff. Is Blood Bath and Beyond better than this? Let me know!
Return of Matt Hazard gets better, the writing saves it along with different set pieces and crap, heck one of the later levels is just Wolfenstein 3d in all but name, it's definitely worth playing more Matt Mcmuscles, just for the writing alone.
Playing any more? I know it’s probably super tedious to get through. But I feel like it’s gonna progress to Halloween Havoc 95 bollocks and I enjoyed every second of this horribly dumb garbage
I really wanted to enjoy this game. As it’s an interesting concept. And it has some funny moments. It’s just too janky for it’s own good though. And there’s a massive difficulty spike towards the end. The final boss was an absolute chore.
I think you should do a full LP of this. the game does get more interesting as you fight bosses from other genres Yeah it be nice if this game was like remastered and polished up and wish this game was ported to pc too.
The best part of this game is when you fight "Altos Tratus" (altostratus = a cloud) who holds a giant sword and talks with JRPG-style text-boxes that Matt has to press A to advance. The trophy is called "Your Turn" too. but yea even though it can be pretty funny at times and i like the idea of videogame characters being aware of each other Wreck-it-Ralph style, it doesn't play very well, just room, cover, shoot, move, room, cover, shoot, repeat. also not only is that Will Arnet, the antagonist is voiced by Neil Patrick Harris
As far as I know, Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard is actually the first game featuring Matt Hazard. It was more of a parody of action-adventure tropes and other gaming tropes at the time. Not super great but I found it to be enjoyable if you were in the mindset of poking fun on the game industry along with the devs, most likely.
I’m guessing the “The Return” in the title despite no other Matt Hazard games existing is deliberate then, to fit the whole poking fun of stuff tone, corrext?
It’s the return because the premise is that the character was big in 80s and 90s and has returned. But like others said, it’s poking fun at Duke Nukem.
Fastest click on a TH-cam video in a long while, Eat Lead is one of my favorite forgotten games. :> The gameplay unfortunately never shakes very far from the same generic third-person shooter formula and the humor is hit-or-miss, but the premise alone keeps it interesting the whole way through and there's some major comedic gems along the way.
So, X-Play covered this game for awhile, and loved the concept, and I was getting into the humor and hype, but then reviews came in, they still loved how funny and meta it was, but hated everything else (the review is still up too). They spoof EVERYTHING, and it works, most of time (Halo, Duke Nukem, Mass Effect, Wolfenstien, JRPG's, Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, Mario and old school games galore), but woof, that Gears gameplay was new then, but still looked played out. Also, besides this, Vicious Circle did a EDF game, and then a bunch DreamWorks/Ben 10/Pac-Mqn/Adventure Time cartoon tie-in shovelware games, was bought by Little Orbit (APB Reloaded) until it's closure in 2016. What a way to go out.
I really liked this game when I played it, I was laughing all the way through. But yeah, the gameplay wasn't the best. Anyway, I'll love that more games like this were made nowadays, medium budget games with original ideas.
I was interested in this game when I first saw it on store shelves and managed to play it to the end. I remember everything from space marines to troopers with water guns to sniper sections to a kraken to zombies that didn't die unless you shot them in the head (and later, slain enemies would turn into zombies) and other stuff. It was neat, but you have to have a tempered will if you're going to beat it. It doesn't have enough variety throughout its playtime to hold your attention. Maybe if it made its sections shorter?
I remember this game. Yeah, it wasn't the best gameplay-wise, but it had good ideas and I liked the meta humour and references behind it. I think that if someone tried again with an idea like this and did a few things differently I think it could be real good. No, I definitely wouldn't have paid full-price for this game, but when I got it I paid ten bucks for it and I'd say it's definitely a deal for that.
I remember hearing about this on GameTrailers Invisible Walls podcast way back in the day, it was mediocre as heck but I loved the idea of playing as a has-been video game action character. One of my first platinum trophies too, great memories
I dont finish games that much. But I finished Matt Hazard. Even though the gameplay was very difficult for me. This is worth some kind of "Speed Play" on the story and lore.
Ah, yes. Vicious Cycle. They made my favorite PSP game, Dead Head Fred. I'd say you should play it, Matt, even if it's just on your off time. Fred's played by John C McGinley (Dr. Cox from Scrubs) and it's just fucking hilarious. The combat is a little jank, but the game is so worth it. I truly wish they'd do a remastered port of it or something. It was a gem. Too bad there's not an easy way to record PSP games unless you emulate them.
It's a shame... this game could have been a great cult classic if the writing was a bit sharper and the gameplay was... y'know... fun. It's like they blew the whole budget on the cast and forgot that they had to actually make a game until the last minute. The Deadpool game did a much better job at poking fun at the medium while still being enjoyable. (although even that game wasn't all that amazing. Still, I liked playing it. Can't say the same about Eat Lead)
Funny how this game's premise mainly makes fun of Duke Nukem Forever not coming out and then Duke actually comes out two years later and it's arguably a worse game.
I think this is one of the few games I actually 100% for achievements. The gameplay is super janky but, the comedy made it worth atleast one play through. The FF7 parody boss fight and flat sprite Wolfenstein soldiers were hilarious.
Rented it once at a Hollywood Video. All I remember about it is that I either sucked at the Kraken boss fight or the fight itself can eat so much shit because of how bad it was
I absolutely agree that Far Cry Blood Dragon's jokey tutorial went on too long. I was annoyed with the game after only the 20 minute mark just going like "Can I enjoy the game yet? Or are you gonna force this aesthetic and hokey humor every 2 seconds?" It ended up being a good game, but man, that opening was silly.
The end levels are bonkers. With enemies from all of Matt's previous games showing up. Some levels drag and some sections are ganky but the plot is enough to keep you going. And the absolute carnage the last levels have going for it. As much as some people hate this game I like it. I mean it is from a small developer so I can forgive the game for not being the best but the humour and and story are on point.
There's some pretty funny stuff later on. One boss fight is a JRPG character who has to pick his attacks from a menu, and there's also a Wolfenstein parody where the enemies are all 2D sprites. But yeah I remember being SUPER into the premise and then being disappointed at how basic the actual gameplay was.
so the company that made this game also made one of my favorite all time games, called puzzle quest. it was a mashup of a match 3 game and an rpgm it was my all time favorite game as a kid, and i still have fond memories today
The gameplay is kinda samey, each level usually has a gimmick. But it's all about the meta banter and references. Like master chef. And NPH as the main villain makes it worth the play. If not on the channel for yourself.
I was just listening to How Did This get Played today and was thinking of this game but couldn't remember the name. The fact that this popped up on my feed is freakin me out.
I remember that game. The premise was funny but got old really fast, the bland gameplay didn't help much either. No More Heroes kinda has a similar concept executed better imo.
It's not the best game but it's fun in its own janky parody way. You really didn't get to the best levels with Master Chef and the JRPG boss. Hope ya try more of the game, it does get a bit better. Can't expect too much it's a budget game but fun for what it is.
What a great premise for a game. The writing and acting really sells it. Too bad the gameplay is so unwieldy and tedious, it seems. Casting Will Arnett works so well for this kind of meta story, it's like if they made a Bojack game. He fits those roles of roles perfectly for whatever reason. It only works because it's backed up by good writing though. Worst thing ever is a badly written meta story.
why do I hear about this game only now?! This is so awesome! Love the meta humor here and there and the whole idea of a game sprite is a total ReBoot thing, but yeah....I could tell that it plays like sh...
Man, can you imagine buying a game thinking you're gonna play as this well-known character that you've grown to love over years, only to have them suddenly be killed off and replaced by some bland, awful hackjob? That'd be *awful.* That game would never have a shot at GOTY, *that's* for sure.
I really love the core idea of this game! I just wish all the gameplay wasn't just bland, kinda janky third person shooting. I would have loved every level to be it's own unique thing with different gameplay mechanics.
1st level = 3rd person shooter
2nd level = RPG
3rd level = 1st person shooter, etc.
But the writing and story are really fun! I love all the 4th wall breaking stuff. Is Blood Bath and Beyond better than this? Let me know!
Blood Bath and Beyond IS better than this, but only marginally. I'd give it like a 7, if this was a 5.
Return of Matt Hazard gets better, the writing saves it along with different set pieces and crap, heck one of the later levels is just Wolfenstein 3d in all but name, it's definitely worth playing more Matt Mcmuscles, just for the writing alone.

Matt Hazard going "An ellipsis?" cracked me up in that scene. The comedy really clicked with me.
Matt's really the only one who's choice of video game can consistently match every game I've rented from Blockbuster, ever.
Truth.
Damn this comment hit me differently
I rented this from blockbuster lmfao

Actually look up matt in hazard land, its a side scroller like original duke.
Master Chef, is all I need to say lol
The Last Action Hero: The Game.
Yes
"See, this is what duke nukem forever should have been" This is the realist thing I've heard Matt say in some time.
Me (matt) : watching Matt mcmuscles Play Eat lead return of Matt hazard
Me (also Matt) looking at your (Matt) comment to Matt McMuscles who is playing the return of Matt Hazard
2:37 predicted Splatoon

"non violent supersoak based third person shooter"
WAIT, was this before of after Splatoon? lol
Before
I really liked this game when I played it, I was laughing all the way through. But yeah, the gameplay wasn't the best. Anyway, I'll love that more games like this were made nowadays, medium budget games with original ideas.
This game is certainly an experience I'll give it that.
I was interested in this game when I first saw it on store shelves and managed to play it to the end. The GT section I remember ^^
Invisible wall was my Saturday candy for a very long period.
@@G.Freeman92
Agree. maybe not the game, which one is willing to pay $ 70 for.
But it is still one of those games that you remember back as very fun.
I dont finish games that much. But I finished Matt Hazard. Even though the gameplay was very difficult for me.

It does get kinda interesting mid-late game I think when you gotta shot 2D Wolfenstein soldiers and then the beta testers from what I remember.
It's a shame... this game could have been a great cult classic if the writing was a bit sharper and the gameplay was... y'know... fun. It's like they blew the whole budget on the cast and forgot that they had to actually make a game until the last minute. That fourth wall breaking intro was the best opening to a game iv seen since late title cards
holy shit someone remembered eat lead
This was actually my second ever Platinum trophy.
They should revive this like they did with Deadly Premonition recently.
It's a bit of a janky game, but the whole idea and writing/cast makes it fun to discover.
They should make like an animated series out of this.
Funny how this game's premise mainly makes fun of Duke Nukem Forever not coming out and then Duke actually comes out two years later and it's arguably a worse game.
I saw this in a Blockbuster when I was younger.
I think this is one of the few games I actually 100% for achievements. The gameplay is super janky but, the comedy made it worth atleast one play through. The FF7 parody boss fight and flat sprite Wolfenstein soldiers were hilarious.

The return of Matt Harzard
Me: Who?
theres definitely a boss later thats one of the funniest moments of "genre-bashing" in a game like this
1:38 I'm really digging the Bionic Commando tileset
there's a 2d Matt Hazard contra style game (hd rendered not pixelated) that i remember actually being very fun i think it was on the 360 arcade
The end levels are bonkers. With enemies from all of Matt's previous games showing up.
Some levels drag and some sections are ganky but the plot is enough to keep you going. And the absolute carnage the last levels have going for it. As much as some people hate this game I like it. FULL PLAYTHROUGH!

But yeah I remember being SUPER into the premise and then being disappointed at how basic the actual gameplay was.
Is that Will Arnett?
Yes. It's always Will Arnett.
I've never heard of this either 🤣
11:50 Time to Split!!!
I love it when you drop Homestar Runner references in your commentary
Is that Will Arnet??
so the company that made this game also made one of my favorite all time games, called puzzle quest. it was a mashup of a match 3 game and an rpgm it was my all time favorite game as a kid, and i still have fond memories today
Yeah I also rage quitted at that point and never touched it again 😂
"Why do you have blue blood?"
They must be undercover cops.
The gameplay is kinda samey, each level usually has a gimmick. But it's all about the meta banter and references. Like master chef. And NPH as the main villain makes it worth the play. If not on the channel for yourself.
For more forgotten Xbox 360 "gems," there's always Blacksite: Area 51, Call of Juarez, the Army of Two series, Fracture, etc.
"dont you hate it when the game does an annoying thing?" says the game as it does the annoying thing
i enjoyed this game back in the day, was fun and didn't take itself to seriously. It has a pretty cool soundtrack
Vicious Cycle also worked on Robotech battlecry for the xbox/ps2/GC.
3rd person water gun shooter? Mans tried to invent splatoon XD
I was just listening to How Did This get Played today and was thinking of this game but couldn't remember the name. The fact that this popped up on my feed is freakin me out.
I keep getting mafia city ads
Dood, i couldn't stomach the first 10 mins of this game. You are braver than most
"Let me know your only fans account" LOL , sucio boys!!!
I COMPLETELY forgot about this game.
“Golden Axe Beast Rider”for the next 360 game?
This game is hazardous to my health
I never heard of this game but its seems to hold itself together more than that duke nukem game
This game was a great example of a parody game done wrong, if you mock and rip off great games atleast try to be as close to those games as possible
The Intro is Lit :D
It’s a very meta game. I enjoyed it.
So this has Lego Batman's Will Arnett and an Arnold impressionist that's better than what we got in MK11??
I remember I got this game for less than 5 bucks at GAMES in 2009 in the bargain bin
It's a spoof of the duke nukem franchise.
I wasn;t expecting the onlyfans account joke.
2:40 this game came out in 2009 and yet this "Soak 'Em" game looks like a jab at Splatoon which was revealed in 2014...
Seems like specifically the PS3 version of Blood Bath and Beyond has been delisted in Europe, no clue why
Matt Hazard would have a rough time these days.
I remember that game. The premise was funny but got old really fast, the bland gameplay didn't help much either. No More Heroes kinda has a similar concept executed better imo.
Matt is voiced by Neil Patrick Harris. Also stopped playing during the wizard level. Became frustrating how quickly he would get killed.
Incorrect. Matt Hazard is voiced by Will Arnett. Neil Patrick Harris voices Wallace "Wally" Wellesly.
Oh man this reminds me of NoobToob so much. I remember Tobin loved this game even though he admitted the gameplay sucked.
i do hope they remake it one day..
even if its dead :(
i really wish matt had gotten to the jrpg bossfight
This was a fun time
I loved this game. . . except when I had to play it.
Was that a Splatoon reference in an Xbox 360 game?
This game is all the right kind of stupid, I love it xD I need to play this someday xD
Yo I bought this game day one when it came out and I agree the controls are jank as hell but it's a fun game if you can ignore some of it's faults
it's like if gex was a human character in a shooter lol
Matt McMuscles
2:46 Homelander?!
so why was the menu theme just Stone Cold's theme?
I noped out at the exact same point in the game, really wanted to see more of it but that f’ing wizard...
Vicious Cycle did Dead Head Fred for PSP
Eat Lead was pretty fun
It's not the best game but it's fun in its own janky parody way.
You really didn't get to the best levels with Master Chef and the JRPG boss.
Hope ya try more of the game, it does get a bit better.
Can't expect too much it's a budget game but fun for what it is.
I remember this back in the day first game I pass
2:43 Plague?!
my brane hurtz.
What a great premise for a game. The writing and acting really sells it. Too bad the gameplay is so unwieldy and tedious, it seems. Did this game just do a Wha happen on itself for the intro???
is the russian general the same guy who voices marcus in borderlands?
are there any other games you guys know of with a similar parody theme?
Man, can you imagine buying a game thinking you're gonna play as this well-known character that you've grown to love over years, only to have them suddenly be killed off and replaced by some bland, awful hackjob?
That'd be *awful.*
That game would never have a shot at GOTY, *that's* for sure.
The blood is blue because the game is rated Teen. I had this game but my brother lost it. Grab it cheap at GameStop before they go out of business.
Don’t call yourself Matthew. You hate that.
You should play Binary Domain!
Vicious cycle i think made dead head fred for psp which i loved you should check it out
