I was in 6th grade when this happened. I read David Smith's book too. He talked about how Susan was messed up, but he never thought something like this would happen. This is the tragedy that got me interested in true crime. I heard she has also slept with a prison guard and he lost his job for it. I wish she would never get out. Ever!
Yes. She needs mental health help & surveillance to keep her from reoffending EVEN in a prison. What a sad case. She clearly needed help as a teenager when she was groomed and molested, perhaps getting her that help would’ve ceased this reality’s existence. All we can do is speculate though. RIP 🖤

Hey Chris. Now this was one of the strangest stories I've ever heard in half the time. I of course heard about this on the news back when it happened. Thank you for spending some time with me my friend! That hot tub/ boss’s son thing was new to us too. Just like you we always come into these stories thinking we knew what happened and then lo and behold something crazy comes along and reminds us there’s so much more to learn. 😱
Amazing that after all these years - and _lots_ of media coverage - there are so many new facts about this well known notorious case (even here in the UK) in this video that I just hadn’t heard of before. Kudos, True Crime Recaps!
I still don't understand how this calculating women did not get death penalty! Those poor kids and glad to hear the kids father was able to move on. This story is so messed up in so many ways!
Great recap, Chris. I was thirteen when this happened, and it was the first time that fully realized that some parents are monsters. It hurts to think about the fear those babies felt, or the agony they had to endure as they died.
A hater of Susan said something like,"Those poor Babies bodies were getting eaten by the nasty parasites in that water for 9 days! Horrifying and horrific!"
She's the type of murderer I like to call "the punisher". In her insane mind the children got in the way of her relationship with Tom Findlay. So she went ahead and punished them for that. May she never, ever get paroled.
I’m usually good with words and expressing myself but I really am at a loss. As a mother and a grandmother I have difficulty in understanding this type of behaviour. Especially from a mother. There really are no words invented to describe this inhuman beast that is meant to be a integral part of society. Those poor, poor boys. R. I. P. Sweet, little, innocent angels. 💔💔💔
It is a sociopath narcicistic behaviour. Many people are sociopaths, but only very few from them face problems with law. Majority of them are in leading positions...excuse my bad english.
Same. As a mom, I simply cannot even begin to imagine putting ANYONE over my kids. Ever. It's just beyond my comprehension. Those poor, poor, sweet boys. May their memories be a blessing.
I was in college and knew she was lying by her over emotive speech with no tears, as opposed to her ex who was devastated. I am aware of the naked hot tubbing, and the man she !liked saying, "nice women don't do that." She asked the detective for his gun before she confessed. People thought I had no heart, but she was faking.

@@maneckineckbeard1749 Yes, it’s disgusting how she blamed a “black man”, it makes you wonder how many times a “black man” has been blamed for a crime he did not commit. She should never be released, if someone is capable of murdering their own flesh & blood, then no one is safe, what’s going to happen when someone else stands in the way of something she wants? Susan Smith has got no morals or ethics, she had an affair with her own Mothers husband, she had an affair with her boyfriends Father and all while she was married. How many “screws” lost their jobs at the prison? I’m not saying they were innocent by any means, but this woman is ruthless, she’s shown absolutely no remorse and blithely carries on like her sex life is more important than anything else. Not being mean but she’s no looker, she’s just a selfish easy lay.
@@gregoryholstein3033 Haha, I had to laugh a little at your remark that she wasn't "a looker," because when I was in my very early 20s a handful of people told me I looked like Susan Smith, d'oh! 😅😅😅 I agree with everything you said, except for the part about her having an affair with her stepdad. I guess I'm of the opinion that because he began sexually abusing her when she was still an extremely vulnerable child, it means that even when she became an adult the consensual nature of their relationship was sketchy, at best. Otherwise, though, I couldn't agree more that her history of behavior after the murder has only made it more clear that she's an utterly cold, calculating, manipulative person who can't be trusted to not hurt anyone who gets in her way. A very, VERY scary woman, indeed!
@@gregoryholstein3033 Also, as someone who grew up in the "Bible Belt," I can say that innocent black men have been blamed for crimes more times than anyone could count...and that all too often, the penalty for being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time was death by torture & public lynching. There's an amazingly shocking website out there (I can't recall the name right now, unfortunately) created by a graduate student which features photos of every public lynching that the site creator could find. There are dozens & dozens of pictures...many of which were apparently turned into postcards and sold as souvenirs of the murders: it's almost too much to comprehend, but evidently lynchings (even those of children) were huge, festival-like public events all the way into the mid-20th century in some areas of the USA. Sickening. And so shameful. But IMHO it's vital that we don't forget such horrors. Wishing you all the best!
I've always said that they should have posted her sons' autopsy photos on her cell wall...she showed them no mercy....my children are my life...her children were an inconvenience....
So many black men were picked up and questioned, which being carjacked the person won't take the kids. Seemed odd to me right away as she didn't convince me and many others. So sad for those beautiful babies.

Susan Smith telling her babies (14 months and 3 years old) to stay together and stay strong through the tv is a serious WTF and logic fail! Like those babies would do that, even if they were alive!
IIRC, Tommy Pope, Susan's Prosecutor said her telling a 3 year old and a 14 month old to stay strong and take care of each other," was the true catalyst for him thinking she was guilty of their deaths.

This taught me a lesson. Never dismiss one of your videos because I think I know the story. You just never know what may be told. Thanks to you and your beautiful wife.
Law enforcement looks and dissects very carefully when parents of missing children make public statements. One can tell that there are no tears coming from her eyes she does not look like she has been a nervous wreck missing her boys. Her face is smiling even though her words are not. This could either be duping delight or the fact that her speaking and her emotions did not match. Whatever the case it is a red flag a huge red flag!
Realize of course, that when this happened, law enforcement was not as well informed about psychological profiling and studying nonverbal communication. But she certainly didn't look upset and how she sounded makes no difference given the incongruities. I think law enforcement is more tuned into these type of things now. I think they bought into her story, for a little bit too long, at the time.
@@truth4004 There are 800,000 kids reported missing each yr in the US. (Aside from the 50,000 adults reported missed each yr). That's one child every 40 seconds. In 99% of cases, children are returned home safely. I don't know what you're so butthurt about bub!

promiscuity is common in victims of sexual abuse… we also shouldn’t shame women for having daddy issues, we should be directing our attention at the dad’s who are abusing their kids which is what causes, so called, “daddy issues” ( in other terms, common ways that women, and men, who have been abused behave).
@User Unfriendly I don’t think Susan is a queen, and I don’t think no women should go to prison, but I do think the way we talk about abused people needs to change, partly because other abused people hear it and it can leave them feeling even more stigmatized than they already do.
What's disgusting is Susan's mother stayed w/a man well-knowing what he'd done to her daughter and even after she found out he was still doing it. She only kicked him to the curb when it became public. Great parenting! Another thing I've noticed in the language being used in various shows like "Dateline NBC" when it comes to SA and the minimization of SA, referring to men who prey upon underage girls as seducing them and language that's completely inappropriate. Since when did it become acceptable to call the unlawful preying upon minors as seductions? I mean, it only seems to apply to men and teenage girls, they'd never say a grown man seduced a 4 yr old. Should we call a ra*ists seducers while we're at it? There's nothing remotely logical about using ignorant words when it comes to serious offenses.
Hi Chris.👋 I watch you and Amy every week and you always, always inject the humanity into it. I believe, heart and soul, that if a life is tormented as a minor, something going seriously wrong as an adult is on the cards. Loving a child "on condition", alcohol abuse, physical abuse or/and sexual abuse, young minds begin to copy, and when age permits, the cycle resumes. This isn't 100% true for all thankfully, but in just about every back story on the protagonist it is. Thanks guys for the stories you bring to us and, as I said, for your injection of humanity. ❤

I remember this case like it was yesterday. I was a new wife and mother living in New Jersey, and I remember the rage I felt inside when I found out she was the one responsible for those poor little boy's deaths. Truly tragic and heartbreaking case. Although I know she suffered from a rough abusive childhood and some mental health issues, personally I did as well and I could never even think or imagine hurting my children. In fact I protect them overbearingly from any potential abuse. I honestly believe she deserves to spend the rest of her life in jail.
I agree she should never be free. However I do believe she needs mental help. Idk why they didn't sentence her to a mental facility for life instead.
@@rosierose8549 I think the public wanted vengeance and so did the prosecutor. That's just my opinion. I don't believe she rises to the level of needing to be in a mental health facility for the criminally insane, but she undoubtedly has issues that she needs serious therapy and possibly medication for, and I'm sure she's getting at least some of that where she is.
She'll never get parole
@@rosierose8549 while she may have had a traumatic background, it clearly made her into a cluster B personality disordered woman, which would make her beyond rehabilitation. Prison is fine for her. If she had seemed upset about having murdered her children, maybe you could make a case for the psychiatric hospital. Not for the stone cold baby killer. She should definitely never get paroled.
@@therealdeal3672 Agreed.

She should be
I was so young but I can remember the television being glued to news coverage. You knew it was a big deal bc we didn't have the 24 hours news cycle back then. I just found their channel. They're very good at telling these cases. They're concise and set a perfect picture and they provide all the pertinent information. I like them very much.
RIP 🖤

Ty for the breakdown of this case! Horrible human being...those poor boys.
Hey Chris. Now this was one of the strangest stories I've ever heard in half the time. I of course heard about this on the news back when it happened. But the boss, step father, other women's husbands in hot tubs are all new aspects of this that I couldn't have even thought possible. Geez, that was one freaky story my friend. Great job researching and narrating as usual. Thanks !
Thank you for spending some time with me my friend! That hot tub/ boss’s son thing was new to us too. Just like you we always come into these stories thinking we knew what happened and then lo and behold something crazy comes along and reminds us there’s so much more to learn. 😱
makes me sick she blamed a non existent black man for abducting her children.

Agreed?! And don’t you think it’s so fitting that his “next” children were girls and not boys? It was so poetic. 🙏🏻

I can remember her pleas also. They weren't believable and I remember thinking law enforcement doesn't believe her either.

Those beautiful boys deserved better. This is yet another tragic case, of a "mother" choosing a man over her children. And let's blame a "black man" while we're at it 🙄😡. Cold hearted woman.
So true. Honestly, looking back, it's a blessing that more violence and strife didn't come out of her blaming a (fictional) black man.
I agree with everything you said, except for the part about her having an affair with her stepdad.

So many black men were picked up and questioned, which being carjacked the person won't take the kids. Seemed odd to me right away as she didn't convince me and many others. So sad for those beautiful babies.
Another Channel said that a Black Man was unfairly incarcerated as a result of Susan's lie and he stayed in jail for EIGHT days AFTER Susan confessed to killing Michael and Alex! 😱
It was Susan's own brother who apologized on behalf of their family for the racist allegations she made. He didn't have to apologize for what she did but he was heartbroken she'd tried to blame a black man and apologized to the town and the black community.

Susan Smith telling her babies (14 months and 3 years old) to stay together and stay strong through the tv is a serious WTF and logic fail! Like those babies would do that, even if they were alive!

We have some of those traffic lights at night that stay either green or blinking yellow and then turn red when another car is waiting here in Maine.
promiscuity is common in victims of sexual abuse… we also shouldn’t shame women for having daddy issues, we should be directing our attention at the dad’s who are abusing their kids which is what causes, so called, “daddy issues” ( in other terms, common ways that women, and men, who have been abused behave).
@User Unfriendly I don’t think Susan is a queen, and I don’t think no women should go to prison, but I do think the way we talk about abused people needs to change, partly because other abused people hear it and it can leave them feeling even more stigmatized than they already do.
Also lot's of women mistake sex for love.
