I mean wow so much to chose from but the forerunner for me has to be how a Mum, who has established attached bonds to her little boys, can think ANYTHING top trumps this, especially the remote chance some bloke might make her his life partner. Great re telling of this horrific Diane Downs type case, you pack in a lot of detail! Much love from the U.K

I remember this crime. When she confessed the world was outraged. I cannot imagine what went through the kids minds. When they realized Mom was not there. It takes time for water to enter the car and even longer for them to drown. Terrible way for the kids to die. She should never be paroled.

At the time. I thought it was unreasonable for her to ask the pretend kidnapper to bring them back to her. Of course a real kidnapper would avoid the area. I thought she should have said something to the effect of keep the car but drop the kids on the doorstep of a church or firehall or public building where they could be found. At the time, I honestly thought the children were alive and the kidnapper was just trying to find a way to release them without endangering himself.

From hindsight, it's easy to be the expert. If we think to be in her shoes, she might be looked down on and abused while growing up in the southern culture. Then she had two kids and had no hope to have a good life in the future. She couldn't give the kids to the father because everyone would judge her. Maybe, she went to the pastor and was told that she should love her children. What could she have done to change her life?

Truly tragic and heartbreaking case. Although I know she suffered from a rough abusive childhood and some mental health issues, personally I did as well and I could never even think or imagine hurting my children. @@maneckineckbeard1749 Yes, it’s disgusting how she blamed a “black man”, it makes you wonder how many times a “black man” has been blamed for a crime he did not commit. She should never be released, if someone is capable of murdering their own flesh & blood, then no one is safe, what’s going to happen when someone else stands in the way of something she wants? Susan Smith has got no morals or ethics, she had an affair with her own Mothers husband, she had an affair with her boyfriends Father and all while she was married. How many “screws” lost their jobs at the prison? I’m not saying they were innocent by any means, but this woman is ruthless, she’s shown absolutely no remorse and blithely carries on like her sex life is more important than anything else. Not being mean but she’s no looker, she’s just a selfish easy lay.

I agree with everything you said, except for the part about her having an affair with her stepdad. I guess I'm of the opinion that because he began sexually abusing her when she was still an extremely vulnerable child, it means that even when she became an adult the consensual nature of their relationship was sketchy, at best. Otherwise, though, I couldn't agree more that her history of behavior after the murder has only made it more clear that she's an utterly cold, calculating, manipulative person who can't be trusted to not hurt anyone who gets in her way. A very, VERY scary woman, indeed!

@@gregoryholstein3033 Also, as someone who grew up in the "Bible Belt," I can say that innocent black men have been blamed for crimes more times than anyone could count...and that all too often, the penalty for being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time was death by torture & public lynching. There's an amazingly shocking website out there (I can't recall the name right now, unfortunately) created by a graduate student which features photos of every public lynching that the site creator could find. There are dozens & dozens of pictures...many of which were apparently turned into postcards and sold as souvenirs of the murders: it's almost too much to comprehend, but evidently lynchings (even those of children) were huge, festival-like public events all the way into the mid-20th century in some areas of the USA.
Sickening. And so shameful. But IMHO it's vital that we don't forget such horrors.

One can tell that there are no tears coming from her eyes she does not look like she has been a nervous wreck missing her boys. Her face is smiling even though her words are not. Another thing I've noticed in the language being used in various shows like "Dateline NBC" when it comes to SA and the minimization of SA, referring to men who prey upon underage girls as seducing them and language that's completely inappropriate.
Since when did it become acceptable to call the unlawful preying upon minors as seductions? I mean, it only seems to apply to men and teenage girls, they'd never say a grown man seduced a 4 yr old. Should we call a ra*ists seducers while we're at it? There's nothing remotely logical about using ignorant words when it comes to serious offenses.

I believe, heart and soul, that if a life is tormented as a minor, something going seriously wrong as an adult is on the cards. Loving a child "on condition", alcohol abuse, physical abuse or/and sexual abuse, young minds begin to copy, and when age permits, the cycle resumes. This isn't 100% true for all thankfully, but in just about every back story on the protagonist it is. Thanks guys for the stories you bring to us and, as I said, for your injection of humanity. ❤

She had a lovely family...I guess the grass wasn't green enough for her! Poor boys. Crazy about the accidental deaths after the fact at the boat ramp...glad they ripped it out. Thanks Chris, Sending love to you and Amy! Fantastic as always!❤

Was pregnant with my third child when this happened. I didn’t believe her and could tell she was lying. She couldn’t cry or meet anyone’s eyes. Creepy woman.

I remember this case.... very tragic....I never believed her.... and I find it very disturbing that a murderer can have photos of there victims.. that is wrong on every level

That smirk on her face in the first photo makes me so angry.

She looked guilty right away. As soon as it was on the news, my family said ‘she did it’

I remember that story. I never believed her. Her tears were non existent, yet she was pretending to cry.

I remember someone saying his Mother accurately predicted the Babies were at the bottom of a lake like a WEEK before Susan confessed. 😱

I remember this! They were killed the day after I had my oldest child and I really didn’t want her to be guilty! What kind of mom would do that, then keep picture of them in prison to look at all the time!!
Great job covering Chris! Keep it up!
