Sometimes I’ve seen that the piccolo is played by the first chair flutist. I’ve also seen sometimes that the first chair flutist may play the flute and will switch off to the piccolo a second later when told or advised to play
He said the ones you were likely to run across in orchestral sheet music for the clarinet family and he didn't include the Eb Alto Clarinet... Yet he did include the F Basset Horn.
I don't know if anyone has pointed this out in the 8 years since this was posted, but the image you use when describing the concert flute is actually the alto flute. Then you use the same image again for the alto flute. And for those people who don't know, look up the contrabass flute as well!!
Hi everyone! Course creator Thomas Goss here. Thanks for all the cool and very funny comments! :D FYI Saxophone gets its own massive section as part of my Orchestration 104 course on macProVideo. Go check out the free previews.
You know what’s amazing? Switching from Bb soprano clarinet to Bb bass clarinet. The only reason is because I no longer have the melody and I’m background music.
We have to use these candy cane flutes more often in bands and orchestras, they sound so nice. Don’t forget the contra flutes. Why not use them too (like the contra-alto and contrabass)? Maybe put a microphone attachment and they’ll be loud enough to hum some great sounding bass notes. P.S. I call the alto and bass “candy canes” too, but the contra flutes I call “4’s” XD
1:07 "The stardard member is called naturally the flute, though it's often referred to as the C flute to distinguish in from the alto flute in G" *_proceeds to insert a picture of the alto flute_*
What about saxophones? By this point they should be seen as serious orchestral instrument. They can also double other instruments in F like the cor anglais or French horn. Saxophones are extremely versatile. Also brass was more noticeably missing. So many pieces have been written with brass so that was really surprising.
Hi dono! This is a course about the Wind Section. Not about the Brass Section. That is a separate course, due out in a year or two. Also I released a course that includes the saxophones last year.
@@pookie_wookie.bear78 "Also I released a course that includes the saxophones last year." Right? 🙂 unconventionaloven9392 is asking why I didn't put brass in a course titled "Orchestration 102: The Wind Section." So I'm telling them why. I'm not saying saxophones aren't wind instruments. I mention that I also released a course including saxophones. The name of that course is "Orchestration 105: Clarinets, SAXOPHONES, and Bassoons."
macProVideoDotCom The Flute Family has a whole Family of Flutes:th-cam.com/video/_wwm2HvXftU/w-d-xo.html ranging from the Db Piccolo Flute (aka Soprillo) down to the C Octocontrabass (aka Hyperbass) which is made Out of PVC Tubing. Bret Newton uses the names Piccolo (aka Soprillo), Sopranino, Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, Bass, Sub-Bass, Contrabass, Subcontrabass, & Finally Octocontrabass for the whole family of Flutes is due to their range.
Hi! I’m a bassoonist, and that’s an opichleide! It’s sort of bassoon like in nature, you posture it in the same way and, if I recall correctly, all the fingerings are identical. the only real difference is that it uses a brass mouthpiece instead of a double reed like what we’re used to. The reason you don’t see it anymore is because the tuba was invented and baroque instruments like it were thrown to the side to make way to standardize it! very fascinating indeed.
Today i was playing my flute and I noticed I couldn't play over a low c, so I was "inspecting" it and the keys were falling off!!! I had to have my band teacher fix it😂😂
Hi Dil, the entire video course (including the video tutorial on the clarinet family) can be found here: ask.audio/academy?nleloc=course/1927/the-wind-section
Little correction and explanations for the French translations : It's not called a "Grande flûte" but "une flûte traversière". And the piccolo is... le piccolo, most of time. People understand "la petite flûte" but don't really use this name. "La flûte en sol" is also called "la flûte alto".
Actually, I used the names that are written in orchestral scores. I've read hundreds of scores published in France, and I've yet to read the words "une flûte traversière" in the left-hand margin.
Me too, but since it's probably difficult to play, hard to get and (I assume) expensive, it was not covered in this course. This course only covers what's commonly seen in concert music.
5:57 Bass flute actually named Bass by mistake since actually this is Tenor flute if it can be matched with saxophones line of ranges: - sopranissimo sax - piccolo flute - sopranino sax - soprano sax - standard C flute - alto sax - alto flute - tenor sax - bass flute - baritone sax - bass sax - contrabass sax - subcontrabass sax
If you want to be pedantic, the bass flute sounds more in the standard tenor vocal range. So to restructure the family, Bass is now Tenor, Contra-alto is Baritone, Contrabass is Bass, Subcontrabass is Sub-bass, and Double Contrabass is Contrabass.
It's correctly showing the transposed pitches that the flutist reads in their part, James. As I show on the screen during the excerpt, "Sounding down a perfect 4th." The flute player reads a C and plays a sounding G on their instrument.
I play the regular clarinet, which is the A Soprano Clarinet... You thought I was going to say, I play the clarinet, why I am I here? But I’m not, I wanted to see the flutes side of the band which is why I’m watching this right now
All you people are freaking out about the clarinets but I want to know where the contrabass flute is. The thing is amazing and it's huge.
Free Palestine of the doublecontra. There's waaaaaaaaaaaaay more than three of the regular contrabass.
Shannon Lynne no......there's only 3 contra bass flutes
Not used in orchestra playing, mainly just flute choirs, do it wasn’t necessary to include I guess.
The Contrabass Flute isn't a standard member of the Orchestra and most flutists can't play it. Plus why do you need it when we have the Bassoon?
KingMeme no there is only 3 hyper bass flutes in the world there are plenty of contrabass and/or double contrabass flutes in the wild
I'm a violinist but I love wind instruments (clarinets are my favorite) and I have nothing but respect for those who play them and play them well.
Kami Lee i play clarinet and i have serious respect for string players, they looks confusing
Kami Lee awhhhh....😘😘. Back to you, boo. I play clarinet.
Yees clarinet is my favorite too (surprising for a clarinettist)
respect to everybody except that one big ego trumpet...
As a composer beginning to write orchestral music, THIS is what I need! Thanks!
You certainly chose a skilled player to demonstrate the members of the flute family. Bridget did an excellent job. Thanks for an interesting video.
I love how after she’s done playing she just stares at the flute
Sometimes I’ve seen that the piccolo is played by the first chair flutist. I’ve also seen sometimes that the first chair flutist may play the flute and will switch off to the piccolo a second later when told or advised to play
Yup, that person was me when I was in band
The alto and bass flutes are a wonderful experience to perform. I got to play them several times in music school.
I heard a bass flute used in a jazz lab group and I was impressed with how well it fit the rest of the ensemble.
I'm a bass flute player :) I'm currently in beginning band because I switched my instrument from clarinet to bass flute.
I love the sound of the contra bass flute. Sounds so beautiful.

"To distinguish from the alto flute in G"
Then why the heck is there a photo of the alto flute on screen?
The mistake was caught a year ago, Zachary. You gotta read the other comment.
you forgot the octocontrabass clarinet
at least include the important ones
Sunny Black you mean octo Contra-alto clarinet, there is only one octocontrabass clarinet, and it is not yet playable
Possessy sshhhh don't crush my dreams

The photo you used for the "C Flute" @ 1:14 is of an alto flute in G. Just an FYI. Really great demonstration video though! Thank you.
Dale Jezwinski I saw that too! I was like ummm...
Mistakes occasionally happen. I blame society. ;) jk Thanks for catching that, we'll fix it in the next upload.
Dale Jezwinski that is a c flute
SULAGNA NANDI no it isn’t
the keywork looks like an alto flute
He said the ones you were likely to run across in orchestral sheet music for the clarinet family and he didn't include the Eb Alto Clarinet... Yet he did include the F Basset Horn.
Correct - the Eb Alto is primarily used in Wind Band music whereas the F Basset has 'some' history as a middle voice in orchestral/chamber music.
We do not speak of the alto clarinet😂

Our school is tiny so we don't have people to cover both so every once in a while I get to switch and try bass 😂
