The contrabass clarinet is most effective when submerged in a wind choir. Same with the rare contrabass saxophone. Because saxophones have an expanding conical bore (rather than the clarinets' cylindrical bore), the bass and contrabass saxophones are impractical - way too large. Even the baritone saxophone is a big, ugly, clumsy thing. The baritone saxophone has an unpleasant, raspy sound. However, the best players - including Harry Carney, Cecil Payne, Pepper Adams, Gerry Mulligan and Joe Temperley - made it sound musical. Pepper Adams is my favorite.

This is the video that inspired me to buy a bass clarinet around winter 2013-2014. Now I'm (kinda) hoping to buy a contrabass clarinet. The issue, though, is if I buy the contra, why keep the bass clarinet? Also, there are a surprising number of clarinets ranging in between Bb Bass and Bb soprano. Sorry to anyone who plays the alto clar, basset, and whatever else is in that range, but why even make so many in that range? Composers cannot convince me that "timbre" is the excuse.
How do you stay in the exact same spot to the millimeter with all the clarinet changes? That's more impressive than even the flourishes on your instruments.
Cyrille Mercadier Basset is basically extended range Soprano, & the F Basset horn is the F Alto Clarinet. They're working on the first Playable Bb (C & A too) Octocontrabass Clarinet (Subcontrabass Clarinet basically) which is the worlds largest Clarinet.
The basset horn is not an F alto clarinet. As clarinets go lower, the bore is made progressively wider. The Eb alto clarinet fits in with that pattern; in particular, its bore is wider than that of the common Bb clarinet. The basset horn is a totally different idea. They took the common Bb clarinet, made it longer, and moved the keywork down. To make it playable, they use a curved neck. Also, it goes down to a low (written) C (concert F at the bottom of the bass clef), so it is an F instrument. It is as if the common clarinet went down to (written) G an octave below its low G. It has the same bore as the common clarinet and does not have the wide-bore throatiness of the alto clarinet. The thing is a bit of a freak, and it is a nuisance that Mozart wrote for it, because they cost a fortune and are not needed much.
Actually the Bass Clarinet is the True Tenor so it's an Extended Tenor aka Bassotenor. The Octocontratenor is actually another name for the Contrabass I think so maybe they're not rare anymore. We'll have to make a whole new Octocontrabass Clarinet.
