I love the orange/red ones. They all came out so beautifully so it's hard to choose. Shapewise I like the plain round buttons. I do wonder if they could be made opaque rather than see through.
You can make molds yourself using 100% silicone. You could take buttons from existing clothing to use to make molds, then sew your button back onto the clothing it came from. I search thrift stores looking for things that would make good molds. Also, cheap, shiny eye shadow can be in place of the glitter like you have.
Yep, I though of silicone, but since it is very pricey and resin was already new to me - I wanted to stick to simpler button project. But yes, silicone is on my "to do" list in the future! :) You can also carve your own molds, that are 100% unique! Oh the possibilities :)
I have almost all of the same molds! Sold on Etsy, I use polymer clay as I can make buttons both for sewing and scrapbooking, when I make buttons for sewing I can just sculpt and raise the back to create reinforcements for the thread.
You should also factor in the uniqueness, as every set made will be slightly different . They can also be custom made to suit an outfit. Genius idea. Thanks
You are so lucky I don't live near you, I'd be buzzing around being so curious and fascinated! You do great and you are super nice and a naturally good teacher.
Interesting fact about resin is that heat is what makes it cure. The bigger the project, the more heat it creates, the faster it cures. Smaller projects will take longer to fully cure because they don’t produce as much heat. That’s why the buttons took a few days to fully cure :)
As always, I appreciate it when you describe your process, your goals, and what worked and what didn't. You remain curious, and it is compelling. I've been listening to Brene Brown about leadership and resilience, and through your thoughtfully creative approach, you have been teaching me the same lessons. I know that you dream of participating on project runway, but you might also think about the life lessons that you (and your followers) share. You could do a mean Ted Talk about a life that appreciates thoughtful creativity.
I agree. Alisa, I think you are pure genius- emotionally intelligent beyond your years. To speak as well as you do with English as your third language is impressive. I’ve watched you develop as a you-tuber and build your brand over the years- just by looking at your older work versus now…you are killing it!
I am thinking about the unique & gorgeous buttons, you could add metals etcetera. It depends on the project. Metallic flakes, mica, pearls... options Imagine when you add the resin paints. Lol. These are similar to working with epoxy work
wow, I really like this craft!! I am frugal and hate the prices for buttons in the stores. I always wanted to make button bracelets for my grandkids but it seemed too hogh a cost. Now they are older and I think that they may enjoy doing this with me !
Oh my goodness. That was so fun. You can really go crazy with this. I did make buttons with fimo clay. They were ok I hand shapped them. Thank you for showing us your experiment
Thank you for this experience. I have all the things to make my own buttons, I just haven't prioritised it just yet. This is wonderful to know how they turned out.
You are awesome. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video. I think it would be cool to factor your time in at minimum wage to figure the cost of the buttons. Just because it's creative doesn't mean it's worthless. I wonder if little flowers and leaves would work in the resin. Or little photo prints. I totally want to do the next set of experiments. Too many projects. Too few free days. Love the cute kid clothes you made.
One thing that affects how your resin looks is the type of mold. If the surface of the mold is shiny, your buttons will be shiny. But if the mold is matte, your buttons will be, too. The buttons with the alcohol ink came out so beautifully!
Good insights! I was surprised by the softening up in the dryer: Resin is known for being fairly heat resistant, it's even used on countertops and billed as fairly heat resistant which is one reason that they are sometimes considered better than quartz. Really didn't think anything would happen to it in the dryer! I've used it for surfaces before and learned a couple of tricks for bubbles: a hard tap brings them to the surface and rubbing alcohol in a spray or even a heat gun can be used to pop them; the resin just resettles after that. Thanks for the info.
Yes, I was surprised as well. I thought of the same - that it is used for countertops and such, where exposure to heat is inevitable. They did not deform or melt, but I could definitely bend them, not a ton, but you could tell they were flexible.
My first experience with resin was in the form of a resin bracelet that had dried flowers in it. I actually wouldn't have thought resin would be heat resistant because that bracelet got very bendy once it reached body temperature.
My pleasure! Yes, I was very surprised when I did all the numbers, but... that of course taking the average and thinking that we do nearly 100 sets of buttons, in reality probably won't make as many, so cost will be different due to that, but on a bright side - you can use the molds for a variety of materials and resin can be used for far many projects beyond just buttons :)
This was fun. Thank you for showing us durability as well as process. Have you seen Stitches by Julia’s videos on making/decorating buttons with clay and paint? So much fun. I think you would like that process too.
Oh for sure will take a look! I took ceramic class way back when, the worked with polymer clay in my 20s and then worked in a pottery studio - clay and variations of it are so fun! Tha k you for your suggestions!
I liked them all! now u can do so many things with buttons. Of Course you can use them as decoration, or replacing old/cuter buttons on clothes. But now you have buttons, how about using them as Buttons; work on those button holes! I can do it, so can you, xox
Can you make the buttons opaque? I liked them all. I really like the crochet button, but would prefer it opaque. Your grey sweater is so cute. The macaron t-shirt for your daughter is also very sweet. Loved the heart buttons on it. Great video.
Thanks for doing this. I had talked myself out of it but I’ll have to look into it again. Large buttons that look unique are hard to find. I love the idea of making them! Yours came out beautiful!
This is so neat! My 8 yr old GGdaughter wants one of your dotted sweaters. Will be trying to get it done this next week. You inspire me to try new things
I am planning to make my own (resin) buttons mostly bc I can't find a large variety of buttons in my area. I am making my own silicone molds though. What a great video! I hadn't considered alcohol dyes
Thank you so much I was really really looking forward to seeing how these buttons turned out, and I’m really really pleased that they all faired so well and I think those buttons are really really cute and adorable too. Please stay safe and well too. xxx Mags
I loved this. I have used resin to make some pattern weights, and enjoyed it. The buttons make me want to give it a try. I like the colors and just being able to experiment with the different colors and molds. Thank you for taking time to share this. ❤Diann
This was WAY FUN!!! Thank you so much. Wonder if you could get a really black black, red red, navy navy, etc. Those shades come in so many different hues.
Thanks, these are all so pretty. We seem to have a button shortage here, so my son did some searching for the Epoxy, I was surprised that it is available in a boat repair place. It wasn't in the hobby places. I might try to do this, it would be a fun project.
Oh, so interesting, Annie! Yes, they use resin in a lot of industries, so not surprising that your son found some in boat repair place. If you try - would be so fun to see what you come up with!
This is great! I have a set of vintage buttons from the 60s that are a particular orange/red colour that I can't seem to find in the shops. I think I'll just try and make my own. Also I remember that you can add printed pictures to resin, so might give that a go. You are so clever. Thank you.
Wow, I shall be trying this :) Fasteners are a definate thing going forward. A local store to me makes buttons using a ring & yarn (traditionally known as dorset buttons) alot of work involved.
I've used resins a lot for earrings now I think I will use, its called Modeling Material it air drys. But I don't know if I can wash them? I loved this video.
You will have to experiment and read upon modeling clay and if it is porous (regular clay is). I have worked with Fimo before, which is polymer clay, and you bake it! So so many possibilities :)
I loved this and did not know there was such a thing as a button mold. I want to try it out. One question did you mix and pour outside, and how bad was the odor?
Tammy, hello there! About your question - I poured inside in a well ventilated area, + the molds are so tiny, I do however have a respirator (as I mention in the video - use PPE) but the smell for this particular resin was minimal... I am not sure how about other resin out there, cause there is UV resin, there is stone resin - so many types...
Oh Lisa these buttons are so lovely! Thank you for this video, fantastic to see it being done. I now have another potential new hobby. Does the resin smell? I have asthma and would perhaps be limited in how long I could work on them. I think it is doable. Thank you Lisa. My favourite are the turquoise buttons.
I believe there is a smell, and I have watched videos of people who make resin crafts professionally wear a respirator and only our resin in a well ventilated space or outside. I came across a video that was titled something like "Resin is Killing Me" made by a woman who dove into the hobby but learned to do it from stylized videos. Those videos did not discuss safety precautions. Anyway, she poured indoors without mask or ventilation and ended up becoming allergic to the resin and having all kinds of side effects.
I wonder why people don't do additional research, read safety data sheets for products they use and don't wear PPE? I say in this video - to do additional research and protect yourself before you do anything new. Even before I operate a new sewing machine - I read the manual, or is it only me?
Elisa where did you get the glitter dots for the cardigan? I loved this video. I toyed with the epoxy buttons only because I made a garment and for 3 months was on the hunt for buttons to set this garment off. Never found the ready made buttons but learned all about epoxy and buttons then made my own. I was very pleased. This was so valuable in many many ways. Love your videos.
Hello there - yes, that's how I feel about buttons too, it is great to make custom buttons that really fit that handmade garment. For the glitter dots - head to the video where I upcycle this cardigan, it is in the infobox of this video and you will see the whole process for it and how the glitter dots came about :)
I love the video, great job putting it together! The buttons came out very pretty, but something to think about is the environmental impact of making them. Unfortunately at the very least the glitter is not good for the environment, so I would still consider reusing old buttons and finding a way to decorate those and personalize them instead of creating new buttons. Regardless, your videos are a delight to watch and very inspiring.
Not for me. The upfront investment is too high to save 50 cents. I looked around the internet and could not find molds for specific size and style buttons (1/2" rimmed and 3/8" two hole) I need for a particular project. After all, the idea is making what you need.
Did you factor in the time (labor) spent to make the buttons? Time is $ afterall. It’s strange but women seem to value their time less than men. (Aaahhh all these factors.) Great job on the buttons :)
Which color buttons are your fav? I think I love the purple one :)
I love the orange/red ones. They all came out so beautifully so it's hard to choose. Shapewise I like the plain round buttons.
I do wonder if they could be made opaque rather than see through.
They can! There is an opaque resin pigment that can be bought! So many possibilities :)
I love the apple green! But I just like that color. I thought many were very interesting and appealing.
I love them all x beautiful x
Me too but I love purple, close second is (both) blues and that interesting red-orange.

With the flowers, they’d be great with a 2 tone design - layer a thin coat of one color followed by a coordinate color.
Great idea!
Polymer clay is fun, too!
what a lovely assortment of buttons. nice to be able to make what style and colour you want for you own makes.
I love making my own buttons. I started making mine when they got so expensive.

I've made buttons with Fimo to :)
I may try recycling plastic no2 and make buttons. I'll make the moulds from air hardening clay.
I love vintage buttons
I love this idea. I need another hobby. Haha
Thank you for this experience. I have all the things to make my own buttons, I just haven't prioritised it just yet. This is wonderful to know how they turned out.
Happy Friday, I’m ready for the premiere
Hope you enjoyed it!

Indeed
I really liked the buttons that you didn’t like!
Me too. Made me question my taste lol
Noooo..... I think it is just to each their own :) that's what makes this world so fun, we are all very different!
This is an amazing idea. Low cost buttons are hard to find in my country.
I once made buttons for a cardigan out of Fimo. They were successful.
Wow...I'm super impressed, would definitely give this a try. Yes the purple one is my favourite, thanks for sharing!

I really like that orange magenta mix. An odd colour but I love it. Love all the colours and the glitter.
Thanks so much 😊right? It was unexpected, and the gold glitter gave it warmth, but I like it too :)
Your buttons work out so cheap compared to shop buttons! I need to have a go at this!!!
