Ppl don't know what real darkness is. It doesnt lie in flesh. All flesh fades away. Eternity is the cusp of true terror. A terror for people for that think they know terror to speak of terror so easily, which they quickly rebuke due to their preconceived notions when they understand absolutely nothing of spiritual matters. If they did they wouldn't say the things they do. Deep down everyone knows the price of Hell wasn't worth the price of this world. No one takes pleasure in true darkness. No one. It wasn't meant for the flesh. All this music lies in pleasure and it's this dark pleasure that Satan makes people think they are cool but they understand nothing. It's quite boring to those who really understand what true darkness is and it's not necessarily the flesh. Yes its complex. This isn't our reality mortals. . Its God's. But you dont believe.... heh.. They can't see with the eye that makes them see....
Glad you put Samael in there. Everyone shit cans them because they are no longer black metal but their first two albums and possibly their 3rd are amazing black metal and very dark!
@@_DeadEnd_ I didn't get that all. I don't even think of them as metal songs; moreso Varg going off on an electric pagan/folk rock tangent. The vocals are interesting because he abandoned the black metal rasp/shrieks for indigenous chants and clean singing.
Varg was really genius in creating music. Just remember how many part changes the “Key to the gate” song. DarkThrone n Burzum were masters in their subject
I must say, being a former swedish black (and death) metal musician myself who found these awesome bands and albums in younger years its actually extra interesting listening on the riffs you pull off when you've really gotten the extra length on the whole recorded setup of you vs you and even reacting to each take! Really nice touch!
What sticks out the most, is that Varg always had more sense for composition than other black metal acts. The way he shapes riffs and puts them into context of a song is exceptional. He crushed everything here except Darkthrone because of the brilliant simplicity of that riff from Transilvanian Hunger. So simple yet so effective. In contrast to Immortal's riff which is just plain basic, uninspired and lacks rhythm.
@@George-cd9ik To answer that, first I have to say that I enjoy complex and intricate music (from prog-metal to jazz and fusion), but not in black metal. Fenriz explained it perfectly in interviews and demonstrated in his songs: the point of black metal ("Norwegian" second wave) was to distance itself from death metal production, imagery and empty technicality. This "limitation" allowed talented people in the scene to explore simple and "primitive" riff structures which ultimately gave us Dunkelheit, Transilvanian Hunger and Bergtrollets Hevn. Dissection is a great band for what it is, but being technically and atmospherically stuck between black and death metal, it excels in none of those. Emperor is fine and certainly infuential, but their music often seemed to rely on overuse of synthesizers to achieve atmosphere and hide mediocre riffs.
@@Odie50000 Mgla never did anything for me. I heard all of that music before, performed by better musicians. There is apparently some hype around their drummer. As a drummer myself, overuse of paradiddle variations on ride cymbal doesn't impress me, which seems to be Darkside's signature move. If you want truly aggresive, merciless yet techically apt drumming, Cryptic Winter's work on "To Embrace the Corpses Bleeding" is unmatched. I could further elaborate on their mediocre riffs, characterless vocal, nonexistant atmosphere and laughable lyrics (all Varg's strong points by the way, from chilling inhuman screams that set him apart from the bunch in the 90's to the enveloping dark atmosphere present in his early albums) but you get the picture. To be clear, I'm a Slav, and I am very proud that a Polish artist can be so highly thought of in black metal circles, but I can't lie and say that I find particular value in Mgla as a band.
That Belus VS Watain comparison is pretty strong. I know we're not allowed to like the later according to the scene police, but they've certainly captured some out of this world atmosphere on some of their pieces.
Varg's riffs are just different on a spiritual level. Sounds pretentious but it's true. Like it's not even metal or something. En Ring Til Aa Herske was missing btw. Good job.
I think it makes sense regarding your "Like it's not even metal or something" comment, since (as far as I understand it) Varg Vikernes wasn't that much into metal at all, but more into "experimental music", techno and ambient stuff. This is actually one of the reasons I liked a lot of the old black metal bands - it seemed like they were experimental musicians and not "just" metal.
@@lelandbobpalmer definitely. Before TH-cam censored his channel he made a couple of videos about his top 10 metal albums and his top non metal albums/music. Very interesting. Fortunately I was able to save the list and here it is: Varg's top 10 Non metal Music that influenced Burzum: 10. Das Ich - Die Propheten 9. Hedningarna - TRÄ 8. Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygène 7. Dead Can Dance - Within the realm of a Dying Sun 6. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake 5. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker 4. Russian Folk Music 3. Old German Marches 2. The Cure - Disintegration (One of the best albums ever made in Varg's opinion) 1. White Label Underground Techno/House music from the early 90's Varg's top 10 Metal Music that influenced Burzum: 10. Deicide - Deicide 9. Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden 8. Slayer - Reign in Blood 7. Destruction - Infernal Overkill 6. Bathory - Blood Fire Death 5. Kreator - Pleasure to Kill 4. Bathory - Twilight of the Gods 3. Bathory - Hammerheart 2. Iron Maiden - Killers 1. Iron Maiden - Somewhere in time (Varg's favorite metal album of all time)
Say what you will about Varg, but you can't deny the fact the man has some talent. Songs like Budstikken, Glemselens Elv, My Journey to the Stars, and Dunkelheit (to name a few) really highlight what he does best (that being both epic and melodic, as well as slow and melancholic). Doesn't hurt that he also let's his notes "breathe" and sound out, as well as throwing in some stuff you'd usually only see on an acoustic guitar. The guy is a creative genius when it comes to music in my opinion. He really does create some timeless classics, I still pop on Filosofem and Burzum/Aske almost daily.
@dazzerstar aye, he may not be the fastest in black metal, the most technical, or the most "kvlt", but he more than makes up for it with stunning writing. But at the end of the day, there really is some magic there that you just can't quite put your finger on.
though i'm not into black metal anymore it was nice to see, cool video, and yes Varg is all about amtosphere, maybe i'm into atmosphere as much as i'm now because i used to love his music
Los riffs de Vikernes me gustan mucho. Los veo mucho más ambientales que los del resto de bandas del género. me transmiten más. Felicidades por el video, muy bien hecho.
That was brilliant, when I first started watching this I was wondering if Dissection was going to come up. Perfect selection, great riffs an unholy duet. Hail from the unfortunate US
Politics aside, varg is an absolute genious when it comes to black metal. Maybe only "freezing moon", " I am the Black Wizards" and "mother north" can beat anything that he has done when it comes to riffs. Great video!
@ŇøHă Ģ. You just can't disagree, Bathory is at least in the top 5 in every single genre he's experimented with, plus the creator of viking metal and one of the main inspirations for black metal.
Varg's music is very simple but its spirit reaches you. It is unique and no band can imitate it. Take " Inn i Slottet Fra Droemmen", for example. Most of the song is a two-tone riff but when it is connected to the lyrics, it creates an atmosphere of traveling at a fast pace, then the riff changes to a more complicated one - reaching the dreamt goal. Simple and deep. Nowadays all those new pretentious BM bands with perfect technique and nice records feel empty inside. I try listening to their music and get no message because there is none. They are posers who lack Varg's spirit. Varg's music is pure poetry.
that's why there is no good burzum cover at all. they can't give the same feeling as Varg. Same as Darkthrone but even there Varg's influence is so much
Some of the riffs on Spell of Destruction are THE most sinister riffs in Black Metal, I literally feel them put me under a black spell whenever I hear them, and have yet to encounter any other riff in BM that has that same effect on me. On that alone, Varg wins for me 😁
Thank u 🙏 u make my day. I was in bergen at the time of the Helvete shop. And Varg Always been unique. All your stuff here is sublime! U chose the best of the best
People can say whatever they want, but Varg's contribution to the beauty of Black Metal is undeniable. He played some of his tunes about two years ago in his ThuleanPerspective channel, unplugged, using his original guitar. Even though his own channel is gone, there are some reuploads that may contain some of those tunes.
Dissection - Storm of the lights bane was always my favourite black metal album; I know it’s not the most traditional black metal album but I’ve always been more of a death metal guy so it appealed to me more 😎💪🏼 what’s your favourite black metal album and why?
Same here. That's a great album, albeit out of my usual taste. I like some darkthrone too. Usually for Iron Monkey, Grief, Asunder, Graves at Sea, Neurosis, Black Magick SS, Noothgrush, Corrupted, etc and many non metal types of music
Probably my favorite as well. I do like some other bands, such as Satyricon and Emperor, as well as some more modern stuff like Dark Fortress, Night Crowned, Wolves In The Throne Room, Saor, and some others. I normally like some outside influence in my black metal, whether it's more melody, death metal, folk, traditional, or ambient.
This was such an entertaining video. I enjoy your enthusiasm when playing guitar. I found myself headbanging multiple times. There were some good band picks in this and they were well played. Fantastic. Mycket trevligt!
Very nice video, thank you! Maybe people who watch this are starting to think Varg more of a composer and musician, than other aspects that He might be outside the music scene. Nice, very nice indeed!
the reason why I grew so fond of Burzum as a kid was that all of the riffs reminded me so much of the old folk songs my grandmother sang as we were hiking the mountains we grew up in on the norwegian west coast. varg is a disgusting man, but his music writing is very unique.
Very true. Children of Bodom adopted a lot of riffs from them. I’m pretty sure a part in where dead angels lie is the same as “lil blood red riding hood” by children of Bodom (the intro)
Just discovered your channel yesterday and I really like it ! I'm not really into guitar, actually more into drum playing, but seeing you playing is really interesting and it helps focusing on guitar which is really interesting and almost makes me want to learn it :D Thanks for your videos !

Varg's early albums are embodies the darkness, cold and fear. Perfect for late-night stroll in the woods.
Wow, 666 likes😈
Or having another 5 kids with your French princess wife
but to me when i listen to filosofem for example i dont picture it at night. i picture it on evening at a forest
Filosofem is perfect for late evening drives in the dead of winter.
perfect for stab your friend
Agreed Brother
Varg Vikernes is slower but BLACKER than others.
Yes that's so true man. It sounds so much more sinister when playing it slow like he does!
For sure. Speed can definitely be a hindrance for this kind of music.
He's actually pretty bright and not black at all. Pretty much the opposite.
That doesnt even mean anything....
Ceremony of Opposites was a great album
Just excellent! Great playing and great exmaples. Thanks for the hard work. "No churches were harmed in the making of this video".
Thanks a lot ! No churches burned 🔥⛪🔥
I liked that you included later Burzum like Belus. Those albums are seriously underrated.
Fallen is one of my fav albums ever
Belus is my favourite Burzum album
@@_DeadEnd_ I didn't get that all. I don't even think of them as metal songs; moreso Varg going off on an electric pagan/folk rock tangent. The vocals are interesting because he abandoned the black metal rasp/shrieks for indigenous chants and clean singing.
Belus is one of the most important albums in my life.
Needed some Umskiptar as well though
darkthrone riff is so powerful man
thylordrexth666 Transylvanian Hunger to me always represented a pinnacle of black metal
At least one is true
Considering how many great riffs Varg created by himself,he easily wins this one imo🤘 Great job with these videos btw!!!
Keep the masses fed and entertain them to keep them in line.
Varg Vikernes
Varg was really genius in creating music. Just remember how many part changes the “Key to the gate” song. DarkThrone n Burzum were masters in their subject
👍 (🇲🇫) mes deux groupes favoris et respectés, les ambiances sont inégalables et indépassables.
This was a great walk through the music of my youth, a really great idea and especially Burzum is my favorite band ☺
How can I not upvote? Great video.
Do Trey Azagthoth vs all of Death Metal next please x
Agreed
Hell yes!!!
Yes!!
Great idea
Wow amazing battle riffs Trey azagthot v/s death metal bands !!!!!!
This is such a cool concept for videos! You absolutely kill it man. Keep going!
Thanks a lot !
John Doe it’s great.
I must say, being a former swedish black (and death) metal musician myself who found these awesome bands and albums in younger years its actually extra interesting listening on the riffs you pull off when you've really gotten the extra length on the whole recorded setup of you vs you and even reacting to each take! Really nice touch!
Burzum has this certain special distinctive sound that just screams pure menace yet blatanyly ordered riffs. Its just so amazing
Nice! That "Jeg faller" 9:55 riffs brings me very nice nostalgic memories...
But Dissection, Emperor?
I couldn't agree more
Perhaps but Mgła smashes anything Varg has done.
I'm going to turn this into a Spotify playlist for my winter walks. Thank you! Awesome selection and you are astonishingly skilled!
That Belus VS Watain comparison is pretty strong. I know we're not allowed to like the later according to the scene police, but they've certainly captured some out of this world atmosphere on some of their pieces.
0:22 Are you kidding me? That Immortal-Poser-Logo while playing their debut album? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? 😀
Thanks for already pointing that out... That was my first thought, too. Crap.
Cool video, but I really wanted 'Varg' to switch to a synthesizer at some point to confuse the other guy.
Fortunately I was able to save the list and here it is:

Yes all good but...
DISSECTION !!!!!!!! 🏴
He uses classical folk music chords
@dazzerstar aye, he may not be the fastest in black metal, the most technical, or the most "kvlt", but he more than makes up for it with stunning writing. But at the end of the day, there really is some magic there that you just can't quite put your finger on.
I totally agree.
Also his screams were very unique, very distinctive from the other bands, even now.
His style is pure shit. Fuck him.
This video was so good, it makes me want to subscribe 23 times in self defense
Underrated comment 😂😂😂
Wielki szacun na dodaniu Mgły do tak doborowego towarzystwa, brawo!
Storm of the lights bane is 1995, the one in 1993 was the somberlain
Idea for your next upload-Jon Nodtveidt vs.Swedens other BM riff lords.
arc.byl.dur no competition. jon was the best and his music was genuine
@@triptychlux Yes. A masterful song writer he was. A legendary musician who unfortunately left us with only 3 studio albums.
But the early version of Where Dead Angels Lie first appeared in 1993.
somberlain is my favourite BM song!
though i'm not into black metal anymore it was nice to see, cool video, and yes Varg is all about amtosphere, maybe i'm into atmosphere as much as i'm now because i used to love his music
To be honest burzum riffs are the gloomiest and most interesting ones
XD
Los riffs de Vikernes me gustan mucho. Los veo mucho más ambientales que los del resto de bandas del género. me transmiten más.
Felicidades por el video, muy bien hecho.
That was brilliant, when I first started watching this I was wondering if Dissection was going to come up. Perfect selection, great riffs an unholy duet. Hail from the unfortunate US
this one i like even before watching!
Same
Lol, same.
Wow, I love how good the quality is. I wish most black metal bands sounded as good as you did in this video. Thank you!
Thanks mate !
great video!♡
btw vargs stuff always made me feel that "cold/dark" mood, which relaxes me a lot.
Thank you for playing Dissection!
Politics aside, varg is an absolute genious when it comes to black metal. Maybe only "freezing moon", " I am the Black Wizards" and "mother north" can beat anything that he has done when it comes to riffs. Great video!
that I am the Black Wizards riff is just stupidly good
This is a heckuva argument for Burzum superiority. The riffs are crazy, I never realized.
I wanted some bathory too but great video either way!
thanks man ! I did some Bathory in my Schuldiner battle !
It's second wave here
Bathory would have won by far
@ŇøHă Ģ. You just can't disagree, Bathory is at least in the top 5 in every single genre he's experimented with, plus the creator of viking metal and one of the main inspirations for black metal.
HAIL QUORTHON ! ! !
The mixing here is so much better than most of the original albums!
Burzum is just unmatched when it comes to that dark, atmospheric and overwhelming feeling
Varg's music is pure poetry.
so true
You know, and I know..
that's why there is no good burzum cover at all. they can't give the same feeling as Varg. Same as Darkthrone but even there Varg's influence is so much
@Inside Barry's Mind I like it.
Hell yeah that was badass! Toss up between Varg and Taake for me, but if I had to choose, I'd go Varg. It was all excellent though.
Some of the riffs on Spell of Destruction are THE most sinister riffs in Black Metal, I literally feel them put me under a black spell whenever I hear them, and have yet to encounter any other riff in BM that has that same effect on me.
On that alone, Varg wins for me 😁
Varg is so underrated riff master. 👌 😎
Yes indeed !
He's sloppy and overrated.
if Varg is underrated then Metallica is fucking underground
I think he is very overated really
overrated because being Church burner and murder, not as guitarist
This mix is sick. I often throw this on in lieu of trying to mangle various albums into a playlist - killer playing bro!

Even though his own channel is gone, there are some reuploads that may contain some of those tunes.
great historical review, great to see how the genre progressed over the years, thx :)
At 5:07 I tought he would kill the other
oh shit
Lol
Nattens Midregal by Ulver , they never get mentioned for some reason
Taake?
I see you are a man of culture aswell.
taake is fucking brutal
for me, Taake is the supremacy of black metal!
Høest is a fantastic frontman
This was such an entertaining video. I enjoy your enthusiasm when playing guitar. I found myself headbanging multiple times. There were some good band picks in this and they were well played. Fantastic. Mycket trevligt!

the reason why I grew so fond of Burzum as a kid was that all of the riffs reminded me so much of the old folk songs my grandmother sang as we were hiking the mountains we grew up in on the norwegian west coast. varg is a disgusting man, but his music writing is very unique.
Honestly i can play Burzum all day with out getting bored.
Thank you so much for this. Was a really great to see how each song defined a period of black metal.

Storm of the Lights Bane´s Riff´s are epic. Hard to beat them.
Very true. Children of Bodom adopted a lot of riffs from them. I’m pretty sure a part in where dead angels lie is the same as “lil blood red riding hood” by children of Bodom (the intro)
Hell yea! One of my alltime fav albums... f'kin ahead of their time... RIP jon
