My aunt has had an ikea detolf for YEARS and before i did my research i didnt know it could be a hamster cage. About a week ago i went to her house and realized it was an ikea detolf and since i have a hamster i asked if i could have it. She said no.
I would get an ikea detolf for my (hopefully) future hamster, but when I get one, it will be my responsibility and my parents wouldn’t want a huge cage on display as there is only really one place where there’s enough space for it, but I’m getting a large bin cage instead Xx in the future I hope to make a large diy cage and own a hamster ☺️
"Because we're handy-dandy people..." 😂 I haven't ever heard anyone else say "handy-dandy" before, but I love that you said it! It's very true when it comes to hamster people being creative with making cages and enclosures. This video will definitely be helpful for anyone who is thinking about getting a Detolf!
I bought a detolf for my hamster before she passed away and when it arrived my dad said to the delivery man “oh it’ll be my daughters hamster cage” and the man was so confused 🙃😂😂
*Omg, I just noticed that I have had an IKEA detolf* in my *room* this *whole time!* Because my mom got me a collection of antique dolls when I was little, and now that i look at it, its exactly what you showed in this video...woow. I never knew knew
I went to ikea to buy an ikea detolf with my mom (for the hamster ofc) and when the assistant asked as abt what we were looking for my mom said: "oh we are looking for a hamster cage" And the assistant said that they don't sell hamster supplies there and this was soo akward
I had my hamster in a very small cage (less than 100 square inches) so I got her a 469 square inch cage. Still showing signs of stress so I built her the diy 1152 square inch cage. She loved it and spent her last year thriving! Thank you!
Your comment was a year ago so I don’t know if you’ve gotten your hamster yet but please don’t purchase from pet stores. Check around at your local animal shelters and also on Craigslist. Just be careful on Craigslist that you’re not buying from a breeder. A good sign that the person really is just trying to find another home for their animal is if they’re sending the supplies with it. They may charge a rehoming fee (rehoming is NOT selling and don’t trust people who breed animals to sell and use the word “rehome”) to make sure its going to a good home. Many people buy them for their kids and then when the kid gets tired of it they get rid of it. So small animals need adopters just like cats and dogs do!
I like this because i get triggered when hamster owners buy a two or three story cage and im like sis hamsters like to run, its what they do in the wild, not climb or fly. Basically the longer the habitat, the better for hamsters

I've had the same detolf for probably 3 years now.... the only thing that I wish I'd known about it before I bought it, was that it was recommended to use aquarium sealant around the edges where the glass meets up. The plastic 'sleeves' that the glass panels fit into did not hold up at all, and I ended up having to put duct tape there instead to prevent bedding from falling through the cracks left behind. Since they're so affordable, I've contemplating just getting a new one to start over with.
Thank you!! I'm a second time hamster owner, my first hamster I got when I was ten, her name was TaterTot, she was a Robo Dwarf and I know this is awful but I did starve it to death by accident, I over estimated the amount of food they burrow. It's been quite some time since then and after much more research and aging later I've gotten my second hamster, his name is Quigiles and he is a long haired Syrian hamster. I've had him for a bit and have noticed he is showing stress/boredom behaviors so I've been researching larger cage types as plastic storage bins can only get so big and this seems perfect! I'm going to Ikea to pick up the Detolf tomorrow and my step-father is coming over on Sunday to help me set up the cage and make a custom lid for it, I've also got new toys and things so he'll have plenty of enrichment. I've been trying my best to give this guy a better life and learn from my past mistakes, I'll get him a large enclosure and when I get my third hamster in a few years hopefully I'll make sure to give them a larger enclosure to start out with so they don't have to upgrade and go through the stress of a cage change like Quigiles. I'm far from being the best pet owner but I'm working on it and trying and learning new ways to give the fur balls a better life. Your channel has helped tremendously and I'm extremely grateful for that. Thank you :]
This was so helpful! I upgraded my hamsters cage to the detolf and now she is so happy! She was in to small of a cage before. Now she has a amazing life. Thank you so much!
I have the Detolf and my previous Hammy and new edition love it, so much room to run around. Whoever thought of the Detolf as a hamster cage is a genius❤️ 😁
my friend uses a detolf for her hammy, and her hammy started chewing at the wood ends so she just put a bit of glass over it and it’s now working great x
At first I bought a small cage because there were no bigger ones. Thanks to your videos I've learned that hamsters need to have a bigger cage in order to have a better life. Also thank you for the recommendation to buy Ikea detolf; because of you my hamster Miša is much happier. Sending many greetings and hugs from Croatia!
They definitely can be a great purchase! Another thing I forgot to mention is that if you ever don't want to use it anymore you then have a nice glass cabinet!
I have the detoft. I had to order it online being we do not have a IKEA nearby so it was a bit more than 59.99 with shipping but it was so worth it. I used a metal wire closet shelf as my lid.
Thank you for the advice! My hamster is now living in a TERRIBLE critter trail and I’m very excited to purchase this as it is a very good cage and very affordable
Hi Victoria! Ilysm you’re my favorite hamster TH-camr and my friends find it weird that I like to watch TH-cam videos on hamsters. I find hamster videos information and interesting. I used to have a small pet store cage, then a 10 gallon tank. I currently have a bin cage with 660 sq inches of floor space. Thank you so much, my first hamster died last month after 3 months, I’m getting a long haired Syrian soon!

I wish I had the space in my room but is have to put it in my carpeted basement. It's not cold but she'd be so far away from me :/ I'd also have to get a kallax or something for it so I'd be quite pricey for me personally. I have bin cages too! Maybe we can both get one in the future haha
Got to say a big thanks for this video, changed my life... I adopted a male Russian dwarf hamster , I got him two plastic cages with 3 levels and connected them with tubes and I left him a few days to settle, started getting him out and handling him and he was such a sweet boy, I then started having problems with him, I can only describe how he was as really bad cage aggression, he was fine once out of his cage but he was totally a different story when he was in his cage, so I went out and bought him a new cage....it was the Savic Hamster Heaven Syrian hamster cage, it was a little bit cheaper the the first two cages he had connected together. This seemed to do the trick, he was a lot calmer and stopped lunging at me while I was spot cleaning...... about 6 days into his new cage the aggression slowly started to show again, so I went away at a wits end, didn’t really know what to do... didn’t want to rehome him that was out of the question, I came across this video and it made me look more into getting my own detolf, it was cheaper then the 1st setup he had and was cheaper then the current cage he was in. So I ordered him a detolf and omg he is now a completely different hamster, since moving him into the detolf I left him to settle for a couple of days, but still going in spot cleaning and staying up late to check on him that the cage move hadn’t stressed him out to much, and now he is brilliant, theirs been no signs of his aggression since and when I’m spot cleaning him or cleaning him out he come out running round my hands for attention, no biting no lunging, I just wish I would have come across this video a lot sooner, he’s also managed to loose a bit of weight witch is brilliant as he was abit over weight when I got him.
This is crazy I was just looking into a detolf for my hamster I was trying to find out if it was good or bad thank you this helps so much and great channel
Since I came across this channel I have realised how small my cage is and thanks for this now my hamster is probably going from less than 400 sq inches to this love this Chanel (new sub)
My hamster got out a little while ago and I used WikiHow tips to find her. We made a really stereotypical trap with a garbage bin, ramp to get to it, blanket over the top and we put veggies and treats on top of it. She was missing for two days before we put the trap up and we caught her within 5 hours😂😂
I got a mouse in august (I’ve only ever had hamsters before) and I upgraded her bin cage twice, but I’m going to get one of these for her. I think she’ll love it
Phenomenal video, Victoria! I do not own an IKEA Detolf but I might use it in the future!! I use the Small Pet Terrarium Kerry for my adorable Robo Hamster, Coco. Thanks for making helpful videos like this, your videos give so much helpful advice.
I got an ikea detolf on facebook market place for only £20. And the lid on the first cage i have is exactly the same why i made mine, so easy to take off and one!!
I have been watching your videos about hamsters and has been helping me with my relationship with my Hamster (Zackery) that's my Hamsters name tho he is a dwarf hamster
I have the detolf didn’t realise how big it would be and it hardly fitted in the car but I love seeing bear have all the space only issue Iv found is I can’t hang toys for her in their like I could on a barred cage but she has plenty of enrichment so it’s not a issue just have toys she can’t use anymore lol
My dwarf hated it actually. It was pretty disappointing since we used so much time and money on it. She was a rescue, so she went from a tiny barred cage to a samla bin, and then went from the bin to the ikea detolf. She would constantly bite the lid, and she was very stressed. Now she lives in a cage that’s 1400 square inches, because that’s the biggest cage I can provide her with currently. She would have loved to get more space, but sadly that’s not possible for me. The detolf is now a playpen. 🤗
dwarf hamsters will grow attachment to their environment and if they are moved to a new cage or subtararium they will become stressed out because they want to live in their previous environment. i noticed the same behaiviour when my dwarf hamster was moved to a different cage and i could immideately tell she wanted her previous environment back
@@ghettogoblin4187 This was three years ago, and she later moved into a 3450square inch enclosure. She finally settled, and lived there for the last year of her life. She showed very obvious stress related behaviors, and stopped when she had enough space.
i asked my dad if he knew what this was and he said no- then i said it can be converted to a hamster enclosure- then he said no- then i said it was only $60 and he was like- where would we put it..? *edit- my hamster bean passed away last night...the people that i got him fromnsaid he was 3 months old but when we took him to the vet the doctor said he was at least a year...he died from a brain tumor...i found him rapidly breathing and on his side..and the worst part...i only had him for 6 days 💔*
This makes such a great cage! During this time with a pandemic I might order this to get prepared to get my first hamster. Been doing lots of research! Your channel is so helpful!! Lucky my sister has had about 3 hamsters so she can give me some advice!
I actually have a wooden Terrarium for my Hamster which has a Floorspace of over 2300 sqr inches / 1,5sqr meters and 12"/30cm of bedding hight throughout but... it of course requires way more customization as a detolf because thos terrariums are not made for animals that chew on wood since they could easily chew through it. So I put Tiles on the inside and thus made it chew and moister proof :D It wasmore expensive then a detolf but I like its looks alot!
0:34 Victoria Rachel : "So why whould you get an ikea detolf when you just glow and get a glass aquarium" Me : Because I can't glow and get a glass aquarium
your videos helped me give my hamster the life she needs 💜💜 i’m getting her a detolf asap ‘ i was considering it before i saw this video & now it’s confirmed

Omg my hamster went missing 3 days ago and we found him by using ur tips and he bit through the ceiling of my downstairs neighbours!
lol
Oh no! Glad you've found him!
Omg! I would actually freak out
My hamster got out a little while ago and I used WikiHow tips to find her. We made a really stereotypical trap with a garbage bin, ramp to get to it, blanket over the top and we put veggies and treats on top of it. She was missing for two days before we put the trap up and we caught her within 5 hours😂😂
Great video Victoria! I love that you’re posting more often😊 my hamster says thanks
Is this a new routine of Saturday’s and WEDNESDAYS if so I CANT WAIT!!!
Ciela Ermilio SAME
I’m just trying it out eventually I’m gonna burn out lol😅
Victoria Raechel lol! Love this!!!! Awesome video!! I own a detolf and honestly my favorite thing I’ve bought for my hamster!!
I got a mouse in august (I’ve only ever had hamsters before) and I upgraded her bin cage twice, but I’m going to get one of these for her. I think she’ll love it
If they're female make sure they have friends as they're very social animals :)
I'm lucky that when i moved into my apartment the last owners left their ikea detolf there.
Phenomenal video, Victoria! I do not own an IKEA Detolf but I might use it in the future!! I use the Small Pet Terrarium Kerry for my adorable Robo Hamster, Coco.
Thanks for making helpful videos like this, your videos give so much helpful advice.
Hold on...this isn’t a Saturday 🤔🤔
:)
I’ve been uploading on Wednesday’s as well
Victoria Raechel omg I didn’t even realise 🤣! You really have been spoiling us tori!!
@HamTips true🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I just got one so so so big for my hamster. Great idea you are a very good small TH-camr. Watching this with my guinea pig.
Thank you!
Not first but early
Remember me 🐹😂😘
Luv you Tori 💙🐭🐹
I got an ikea detolf on facebook market place for only £20. And the lid on the first cage i have is exactly the same why i made mine, so easy to take off and one!!
That's great!
HELP! How do I convince my parents to let me buy this? I'm buying it with my own money, but they think that it will be hard to clean.
Tell them it’s a lot easier to clean as because of the size you only need to spot clean every 1/2 weeks
@@Spl1ntr3d Thanks, but I already got a different cage!
EARLY! BTW YOU HELPED ME PREPARE FOR MY HAMMY! THXXXXXXXXXXX
I have been watching your videos about hamsters and has been helping me with my relationship with my Hamster (Zackery) that's my Hamsters name tho he is a dwarf hamster
Thank you! I'm glad my videos could help!
@@VictoriaRaechel
Your welcome😊
I have the detolf didn’t realise how big it would be and it hardly fitted in the car but I love seeing bear have all the space only issue Iv found is I can’t hang toys for her in their like I could on a barred cage but she has plenty of enrichment so it’s not a issue just have toys she can’t use anymore lol
Ooh if you have a mesh lid you can hang stuff on there! As well as the bars not he inside can be used for hanging some things!
Omg I love you your my fav you tuber........
Ever!!!!!!
SAME!!!!
aw thank you!
I’m early wow. I love your videos girly 🐹❤️
Thank you!
OMG I CLICKED OB THIS FASTER THAN I HAVE EVER CLICKED ON ANYTHING I HAVE EVER CLICKED ON!(I DIDN'T EVEN READ THE TITLE)
SAME EXACT THING I DID!!!
...relax....it’s just a cage lol
@@simran9663 LOL
I'm gettting TWO detolfs from IKEA for my hamsters! You taught me all my hamster care! :D
MAN I LOVE DIY'S
Anyone agree?😏
I actually used the glass door that came with the IKEA Detolf to make a lid and it works perfect. It has a mettle hook to lift it
I’m not sure that provides enough ventilation.
I got mine a month ago sadly the car was too small to directly get it from ikea so I spent 200$ in total due to shipping but I don’t regret it!
Okay Sav Wow! How kuch did the detolf cost itself? Mine was 59.
haha shook i was looking into buying this just now but wasnt sure then i got the notification for this video!
I hope it helps!
I have the ikea detolf for my two hammies they love it and it’s so affordable! (they are in separate cages)
i asked my dad if he knew what this was and he said no- then i said it can be converted to a hamster enclosure- then he said no- then i said it was only $60 and he was like- where would we put it..?
*edit- my hamster bean passed away last night...the people that i got him fromnsaid he was 3 months old but when we took him to the vet the doctor said he was at least a year...he died from a brain tumor...i found him rapidly breathing and on his side..and the worst part...i only had him for 6 days 💔*
R.I.P Vanilla Bean 💔🥺🐹🙏🏻
This makes such a great cage! During this time with a pandemic I might order this to get prepared to get my first hamster. Been doing lots of research! Your channel is so helpful!! Lucky my sister has had about 3 hamsters so she can give me some advice!
damn you're stunning❤
not thirsty just speaking facts
Thank you!
Um ok that sounds wrong but she said thank you

@@BENYEET I'm sorry if I made u feel bad
I actually have a wooden Terrarium for my Hamster which has a Floorspace of over 2300 sqr inches / 1,5sqr meters and 12"/30cm of bedding hight throughout but... it of course requires way more customization as a detolf because thos terrariums are not made for animals that chew on wood since they could easily chew through it. So I put Tiles on the inside and thus made it chew and moister proof :D It wasmore expensive then a detolf but I like its looks alot!
Im so early yay im so happy
I'm getting the ikea detolf for my birthday I can't wait!!
0:34 Victoria Rachel : "So why whould you get an ikea detolf when you just glow and get a glass aquarium"
Me : Because I can't glow and get a glass aquarium
I thing she said “go out” but really fast
the way getting both the detolf and cabinet way cheaper (on my side) than a metro cage. wow. nice!
Hai I am the first comment!
your videos helped me give my hamster the life she needs 💜💜 i’m getting her a detolf asap ‘ i was considering it before i saw this video & now it’s confirmed
Glad I could help!
I just got mine, I am really excited to set it up. Thanks for the information.
Easy to assemble, good strong materials, feels good, looks good.
