Well bioactive enclosures will have microorganisms that help clean up their poop, and yes I have rodents, which I do clean their enclosures because they are not in bioactive ones. If you overcrowd the enclosure then yes, you will need to clean it every now and then, common sense.

How can you set this whole thing up, and not let us see the hamster running around in there? I watched the whole video anticipating seeing a little hamster exploring its new home. Only to be let down. It’s like watching a really good movie that abruptly stops with out an ending. And Thank you everyone I eventually did get to see it.

I just want to say, I've been studying habitat design and this habitat looks absolutely perfect for an animal like a hamster. I know hamsters in traditional cages often suffer from stress and boredom, but with all the things you put in there for him to play with and explore, I'm sure he'll be really happy. And most of it looks handmade too. I love that amount of commitment for a pet most people wouldn't spend more than $30 on. It really shows that you love them.
I've spent way too much time and money hand building my hamster's living environment. I regret nothing.
Would this enclosure also be suitable for a mouse? I’m considering buying one.

I don't know much about mice, but I think this type of enclosure should be good as long as you have lots of vertical space with lots of things to climb on.
Also, mice live well and happy if they have a partner or two. Unlike hamsters, they are very social animals!
LovelyRenn i heard from multiple websites that mice (if u have a pair of them) wouldn’t really like a space that big, because they’d be kinda stressed. It said their cage should be smaller than this one, about 400 sq inch. Is this true? Haha

I didn't dislike the video, but I see some things why some people can do that... Maybe they have a good reason for this, but they don't type it in comments...
For example - as for myself - I am afraid of the flowers he put there... I think they are poisonous if chewed, I can't imagine putting something like this into hamster habitation, when hamsters are known for chewing everything...

dreamturtle12 I’m pretty sure those are perfectly fine for the hamster to chew on besides most hamsters don’t really like eating flowers nor herbs but they’re a nice touch to naturalistic enclosures. Besides Erin is a lovely person and in her videos you can clearly tell she cares deeply for her animals and does plenty of research before giving them something! So no worries!

Even worse! What if this was possibly...a joke...? Oh no!
Ooh! I never would've thought to make a naturalistic vivarium for a mammal, but it makes perfect sense to do so! Adding a false bottom/drainage layer will help keep humidity stable and keep the substrate from molding. Also, if you add springtails and isopods to the setup, it'll help keep the enclosure clean and help clean up the hamster poop! Live plants are great for keeping ammonia out of the substrate.

I'm currently sitting here right now holding my dying hamster Loki. He's been a wonderful friend to me and the reason I got him was because of your channel. He's been an absolute joy to love and care for and has spent all his life with lots of healthy food and a massive cage and lots of love and affection all thanks to you. I actually did research by watching lots and lots of videos, including yours, for roughly seven months to ensure that whichever hamster I got would have a wonderful life with me. My mom told me early this morning to come home to see Loki one last time. He's held on for as long as he could and every time I look at him he looks so tired. I'm sad that it's time to go but I also know that I gave him the best life he had ever known since I got him from a pet store. I have loved every minute of his adorable adventures and antics. One time he escaped from his cage because of a large toy and after all of two days he decided that it wasn't for him and fell for our bucket trap. I'm glad he came back and I'm glad I'm with him one last time. Thank you Erin for providing all your viewers with lots of knowledge and advice. Love your channel lots.

i once saw a cage that had 50sq inches if floorspace. i was so mad because it was for a Syrian and the bare minimum is 600

oop oop I saw one with only 30 sq inches it’s smaller than my travel cage
I am honestly enamored with this set up! A naturalistic setup that uses soil as the bedding and incorporates plants into it had never occurred to me before. This is giving me so many ideas!!

Did something similar for some rats i adopted many years ago. Used an old 90gallon fish tank, some 1x2 boards, and hardware mesh to make them a nice enclosure.
made the mistake of using some locally sourced spring water, ended up with a few tadpoles in it. they became frogs.
then they became rat snacks.

Am I the only one who's not a hamster but wants to play and live here? Imagining it subconsciously while watching the video? Heck, I don't even have a hamster! Haha This was so relaxing, fun, and valuable to watch. I thought I was watching an ASMR video for a second. As a landscape photographer, this is wonderful. This just showed me another thing that combines my passions. I would love to do this someday when I'm a little bit more able in life. Thanks for the inspiration.

Won’t be that hard to clean if he makes the soil area bio active. Then it would be just a few areas to clean.

Jerry Andersen springtails and isopods actually can take on mites. They also clean up fungus. They clear the waste your hamster or other animal would produce so you need to do minimal cleaning. Even If you need to clear the soil, just dig out a few and keep them on the side to put into the new soil or enclosure as they reproduce quite quickly

my hamster used to love sections of carpet in their cages more so than aspen or dirt. It makes for easier walking. The plants you have is a good idea. My hamsters also used a litter potty. Plus toys work for them too. I love your water bottle and wheel.
