Dude this video is kind of nuts. It's so interesting to watch your transition from buying into the sort-of circus-y atmosphere in Dandong and having a fun time to meeting actual North Korean women and how it sobered you up and put into context how twisted the atmosphere on that side of the river is when compared to the reality of what's happening in NK. You can really see the impact it's having on you by the end of the video. Very strange juxtaposition, thanks for getting out there and making this video.
Good post. We all know NK is there and a reasonable chunk of whats going on, but it's kinda abstract... on a new item or magazine article. To go in person to see it with your own eyes and realise that it's also a tourist attraction is kinda bizarre.
this is also a place where you cannot fully and freely discuss the things that going on in there , it's not like in the west when you have protests ,debates and news shows when something bad orcontroversial happens . the west is far from perfect but at least you have the freedom to express it in the west

It's a scam. Chinese makes drugs in their lab bc they have the chemicals. China ships to Mexico to distribute the drugs and cook it into powder/rock form. America protects the cartels as it enters the border. Everyone gets paid It's quite obvious bc Mexico does not have the resources or intelligence

I’ve been to China countless times. The people are lovely and helpful. I’ve stayed in towns that we were the only westerners and the people were fascinated by us. Google translate has opened up so much dialogue. Luckily, I’ve always been accompanied by Chinese friends who helped me navigate through the vast airports and train stations. The reason the taxis are different colors is because they travel to different zones..at least that’s what I’ve been told.

I've literally only learnt that they are fake from the comments, it's funny but really weird for a first time viewer. It's my first time seeing a travel vlogger make up the sub titles :D. Luckily I was scouring the comments for the subs at around 7:40 expecting people to talk about them.
i find it really weird and strange that he makes up the subtitles. you wouldn’t know upon first watch if they’re real or not. but he makes these random strangers seem bad, as if they call him names and stuff. it’s really not cool at all.
Chinese indeed only speak Chinese. But look, how about US citizens, do they even learn any other language? Even your neighbour's language(Spanish)you don't learn. Generalising of course, same as you did.
It is mandatory for American schools to teach a second language, & Spanish is the language that is taught to American students. Also, he wasn’t speaking negatively about China not teaching second languages, he said it was admirable they put their own language first among others. Which he is 100% correct on.
@twentysecondcenturywoman It wasn't my intention to attack him in any way. neither i am defending China. Just making a point. Most countries have a second language at public schools but the question is do students learn anything? For me my time we had French and English. I couldn't learn French as well as I learned English. Every country puts their own language first naturally since they are born. For instance, its not because i learned English that i am less Portuguese or patriot. I kind of get it, China and USA are huge countries, so there is less necessity of learning other languages but they should put some effort because the world is getting smaller and neither English or Mandarin are the only massive speaking languages.
@@Eddietheteddiewhereas in Canada every student has to take 4 years of French even if they’re not close to Quebec (the only province where the majority speak French). The more videos on China I watch, the more I start liking it. It’s kinda the character development you’re going through in the video where you’re joking about China at the start and gradually starting to see what China and its people are really like. So many nice people in this video that go way beyond what someone (admittedly) in the West would do for a Chinese person. I’m talking about the guy that made sure you got through the gates at the train station; the woman who walked you all the way to your room in that other hotel; the guy who walked you to those two restaurants. Really sincere people. Also, that guy who said it was his first time talking to a foreigner is amazing. His level of English is super solid. Anyway, fun video. The subs were funny as hell. I was born in America, 58 years ago. I've been to 32 mainland states. I went to Jamaica in the early 90s when it was actually somewhat safe yet never felt safe. Why? Because I had built a rapport with the bus driver on that 2 hour ride to the resort. Upon exiting the bus, he grabbed me by the shirt collar, pulled me close and spoke softly these words..."Do not leave the resort after dark. Do not venture into town looking to party and dance at the clubs. Stay way from all dat mahn. I'm saying this to you because you treated me with respect and honesty. I'm leaving it up to you as to tell all the odder whyite people on dis here bus." 😮
I was in Jamaica several times in the 90's doing humanitarian/philanthropist work and stayed in Montego Bay. I never traveled alone or at night, because of this, I felt kind of safe, but I could never get used to all the vendors and street people trying to sell you stuff everywhere you went.

eh, depends on the city and business, the great thing about Capitalism is the market is variable for different sects and businesses, and usually it takes more money than normal to get better quality stuff, but the quality is usually unparalelled at that point than most countries
@@sora2534 The market isn't variable because of high costs. The market becomes variable and liquid when people stop overcharging. Which explains why capitalist countries who don't operate by capitalist values like free market, continuously raise prices and make it impossible for people to start businesses because the cost is so high. Which is why in one of those countries you can go from one side of the country to the other and all of the exact same businesses will be the main purveyors of goods and services at opposite ends of that country or opposite ends of that globe. And when the majority of people are employees, they're working for a 10% return on what they put in and very few of those people will become business owners, mostly due to artificially high costs and regulations
Chinese people take pictures of the most ridiculous things, sign posts, bins, bicycles, dead bushes, I saw a group of about 10 Chinese pick a cat up and take it in turns to to have their picture taken with it, and the most disturbing one that I’ve seen a lot is of them taking photos of very young children including my son who was about 4 or 5 at the time, a group of Chinese swarmed around him taking pictures putting their arms around him and trying to pick him up. They did this right on the grass of my home until I and neighbours confronted them and called police and they were made to delete all the photos. No one is saying they're communist based on their economics. When people say China is communist, they're literally talking the "COMMUNIST Party of China" where the government does adhere to core communist values such as the "state owning the means of production" which is very evident with state owned enterprises that extends into all aspects of infrastructure such as petrol, power, transportation, roads, telecommunications, media, etc... and even with corporations they have ultimate control and siphon money from them. Then you have other communist practices such as complete control over government and suppression of opposing parties as that's seen as separating from the collective as well as suppression of individualistic identity with censorship and surveillance on top of free media being banned in threat of death, all those jokes online of Journalists disappearing didn't just come from nothing. An authoritarian group being used to overthrow the government is a key point of transition in Karl Marx's writing which is exactly what the CCP did in 1949. You can argue this is not true communism because the people don't hold power, however the CCP has checked off enough boxes for them to be a communist part and rarely does implementation and labeling match the exact purpose behind an ideology.

1:12:30 They understand the differences you’re mentioning. As far as I know they’re allowed to be on the coast, China doesn’t harbor NK citizens as refugees so there really isn’t a big motivation to swim across as they’d be immediately sent back to horrible punishments that will extend to their families.
It actually depends on relationship between these two countrie. It has always been changing. Most refugees settle down and live in Chinese Korean ethnic minority communities near NK. People usually just turn a blind eye. Very few will be captured and sent back as a gesture.

As a visitor, China is a nice country with friendly people who are super helpful and it is safe. However, some things can be a hassle, like paying for stuff with apps if you aren't a local. @@JunPaul-s8p Your comment is very interesting. I did not know that the term "Do as the Roman's do" 入乡随俗 is known to the Chinese. Very cool to see it used. Thank you. As for phones and apps, westerners are slowly adopting phone based payment methods, but do not like the idea of not having physical cash. Additionally, we are much more reluctant to have our government issue state identification that is tied to apps. Americans saw what Canada did to its truckers during the pandemic, cutting off their bank accounts because they were protesting, and was disgusted. Online shopping is very common in America, but phones/apps being the only way to make storefront purchases are not. Debit cards and cash are king.
@@JunPaul-s8p I don't think the issue is using a phone to pay. We can all do that with the Apple/Android wallet and our bank accounts in most countries. The problem is that we can't use them in China. We end up having to use Alipay as we can clear the verification process, even then it often takes a few attempts. This is further frustrated by Alipay not always working while in China, this may be due to us using temporary eSims/connection issues, our banks having a problem with it randomly, or the version of Alipay we use just being flaky. It is deeply unsettling to be in another country without the ability to pay for anything, like food/drink, accommodation, or transport and not being able to use cash as a safety net.

Hi, this is the first time I’ve watched your video, and I really admire your courage to step into a country that we’ve been taught to "fear" since we were young (especially since you don’t speak Chinese). I also appreciate your empathy towards North Koreans and your politeness to the people you meet along the way. However, I have to say that I feel really uncomfortable with the yellow “fake subtitles.” I was shocked when I first saw them because these innocent Chinese people were saying things completely unrelated to your subtitles, yet you used extremely aggressive language as a form of “humor.” Some of these people might have simply been trying to understand you or asking if you needed help… Looking at the comments, it’s clear that many viewers didn’t even realize the subtitles were fake. None of the Chinese people in the video showed any hostility towards you, yet your “humor” seemed to arbitrarily paint these normal and friendly individuals in a hateful light. That made me feel really uncomfortable. I understand that this is your way of expressing yourself, and perhaps there’s even an element of self-deprecating humor (since you use a lot of swearing). But at the very least, you need to clearly indicate in the subtitles that the content is fictional and not an actual translation. These innocent people don’t deserve to be misunderstood or misrepresented by you or your audience.
Awesome video, would love to see you travel to Chongqing a mega city that is built on a mountain side with confusing varied levels for all the buildings.

The sea was calm, the air was fresh, and there were seabirds, dragonflies, and jellyfish that accompanied our ship during the journey. It was a memorable travel experience, and to this day I still consider ferry to be the best mode of travel, better than cars, planes, and trains. Would love to relive that experience someday.

I kind of get it, China and USA are huge countries, so there is less necessity of learning other languages but they should put some effort because the world is getting smaller and neither English or Mandarin are the only massive speaking languages.
in states bordering mexico, bilingual businesses, roadsigns and people are incredibly common.
@@Eddietheteddiewhereas in Canada every student has to take 4 years of French even if they’re not close to Quebec (the only province where the majority speak French).

@@sora2534 Not China, because everything in Capitalism countries are made in China, whether they are labelled so or not.

I realy LOVE your "translation" of the korean/chinese comments you received from the people hahahaha....very funny. it was very exciting to watch. Thanks for that. I will send that video to few friends and i just subscribed as you mentioned your Japan trips (while on the Korean Ferry). As i love Japan, i will check your other videos. All the best from Germany. nothing says communism like purchasing an overpriced pin on the street from an independent vendor.
This is why I cringe at Americans when they call china a communist country
很假的一个别针,他能从朝鲜弄过来真货我就把别针吃了,这就是个从义乌五毛钱买的小商品
@@omarsabir1210 you're a cringe lord
@@omarsabir1210a yes, there's no communist party ruling in China
You can eat at North Korean restaurants in Beijing. I've eaten at them and the food is good. Many North Korean dishes will look similar to Japanese food, especially hand-rolled sushi. I've been to China more than 60 times. There's absolutely nothing to fear, but don't do anything stupid like bringing weed or illegal drugs into the country. China is a very safe country to visit.
I go to China for their opium houses..I don’t care about bringing weed it just sucks cause I feel sick whenever I have to go back home..when I’m home I have a few days of China fever and I daydream about my next trip back 😢
When an American is boggled over another country not having a second language. My dude. What language can I read on your airports?
So true. Small USA brain cant comprehend

tbh most of the airports in the US have multiple languages available, but generally English and Spanish by default
Spanish is everywhere with French occasionally
I'm paying attention to all the subtitles, and I love it when he adds some random bullshit that the people aren’t saying. Then, 20 minutes later, I wonder if they really said that.😂😂😂

He is honest, talks unscripted and very funny and don’t forget, he mentioned himself as a small brainer 🤣 he is funny as f… and represents the “typical middle class tourist”. I saw him the first time and be curious about his other content. Be kind and friendly guys and the world is a better place for all! ❤️
weil er die Kultur nicht kennen lernen will. Er will nur content. Deswegen. Typisch amerikanisch eben.

As a traveler at heart that’s stuck in a dead end job with no opportunity to travel in sight, I’m feeling lucky to live vicariously through this video and totally relate to the culture shock of a new foreign country. You’ve got a new subscriber!

So I have a question.... if FB and all of those other apps you mentioned, are banned.... if someone in China were to use a VPN, could they access fb and etc, like you did? And if they could... and they got caught, would they get in trouble?
My dad fought in the Korean war.... he never talked about it.

Yes, get VPN before going to China. Some eSIM act like a VPN as well.

China and America doesn't hate each other. When the aliens invade, it's these two countries fighting together to defeat them. See, even a random middle aged Chinese man's favourite Hollywood movie is Forrest Gump.
The US government has become as much propaganda as any third world nation, and I think the bottom line is, both governments hate each other, none of the people do.
Except that those shit hole countries ARE both the aliens
Awesome job on the translations!! I had to rewind it at one point. Hysterical.

I thought the captions that people were saying in Chinese were real at first. Lmfao. I love your sense of humor. Really entertaining and I think it's really cool to see other countries like this and especially off the beaten path. I have to add when you spoke about the armed guards and the assumed poverty in North Korea it reminded me of my family in Northern Ireland growing up with armed British troops patrolling the streets they grew up and went to school on. It’s not the same I understand that but it was very sad and traumatized many of my family and relatives having had to experience that for so many years during the troubles.
You were quite empathetic to the young women and I appreciate that 👍💕

As a visitor, China is a nice country with friendly people who are super helpful and it is safe. However, some things can be a hassle, like paying for stuff with apps if you aren't a local. If the Chinese government simplified the tourist experience, with China's long and interesting history and variety of landscapes and cuisines, they'd attract huge numbers of tourists. From a soft power perspective, I'm surprised they haven't tried harder.
Great tech, but repressive government. 👎@@JunPaul-s8p
@@JunPaul-s8p agreed. i live in brazil and even we got our own apps and stuff to pay digitally. similarly to china, brazil has been slowly but surely been transioning into using more digital currency through PIX (basically AliPay) so im sure that it can be annoying for some tourists, but its super good for locals.

It blows my mind that even working class ordinary Chinese folk like the taxi driver can speak some English. I doubt there are many native British taxi drivers who can speak a single word of Chinese.

@@bryangibson2788 Sort of, I agree. But... I worked abroad most of my life and had to learn local languages as did many of my colleagues, yet there are lots of people who just can not grasp it even when they are surrounded by foreign speakers every day. Many are embarrassed to even try speaking a foreign language, so I appreciate it when I see other foreign people have a crack at English and succeed, however small that success is.

Hi, this is the first time I’ve watched your video, and I really admire your courage to step into a country that we’ve been taught to "fear" since we were young (especially since you don’t speak Chinese). I also appreciate your empathy towards North Koreans and your politeness to the people you meet along the way.
However, I have to say that I feel really uncomfortable with the yellow “fake subtitles.” I was shocked when I first saw them because these innocent Chinese people were saying things completely unrelated to your subtitles, yet you used extremely aggressive language as a form of “humor.” Some of these people might have simply been trying to understand you or asking if you needed help…
Looking at the comments, it’s clear that many viewers didn’t even realize the subtitles were fake.
这些人都非常的善良,一直在主动的帮助他,真的是很善良很善良的人。但是他却将别人的善意翻译成了这种话。真的很讨厌。
Absolutely. I'm glad I read the comments or I would've gotten the complete wrong impression of this video. It's not at all obvious that they're fake.

I was on an old ferry similar to the one you took from Tianjin China to Incheon Korea back in Aug 2004, and it took more than 24 hrs to arrive at the port of Incheon.
