    As a woman who also does not fit well into standardized sizes despite having a “desirable body type”, I have a bit of a vendetta against off the rack since starting my clothes making journey. Thank you for this video, a wealth of information and maybe one day I’ll have a bra that actually fits. 💞🥺

    To your question why people with bigger size breasts avoid foam and opt for unlined often: I am a 40D (though according to the chart I might actually be a 40I lol). I avoid foam cups sometimes because while they do support and can be comfortable, they make my breasts really stand /stick out, like a shelf haha. So when I do not want them on display, I wear unlined which gives a more subtle silhouette. An unlined bra can also help fit into some of my tighter tops and avoid button gaping.

      See, I didn't even think of that!! That makes sense, that someone with my size wouldn't even worry about that...

      I agree with the more natural form statement, it is much more flattering. I also find I fill out an unpadded cup much better and avoid the whole "shelf boob" look, I could wear the exact same size bra from the same company, but the padded one will gape at the top while the unpadded one hugs my body better.

      I was very fortunate to get fitted once at a bra shop where the woman working there really knew what she was doing. I always struggled with foam bras because one of my breasts is a whole size smaller than the other and the gap on the one side was always incredibly noticeable. She recommended that I stop wearing foam bras and instead wear lace ones. I took her advice and never looked back. I have also found lace bras to do as you said here: my size is a US 32DDD (UK 32E) which isn't really THAT big, but is large enough that foam bras can definitely make them look absurd. As a side note, I can really quickly tell if the fitter at a retail store knows what they are doing when I tell them my size. I have often been given a certain LOOK when I tell them my size. I've had girls smirk at me, roll their eyes, or tell me I must be mistaken. I've had people 'suggest' other sizes as an alternative and they have never fit. Before I was measured I mistakenly thought I was a 34DD as that is the smallest band size most stores offer and the largest cup size I could find. When I go to stores that don't stock my size that is often the size I am directed to wear.
      EDIT: I am interested in making a foam bra with your instructions on how to draft one. I just think I would have to make two different cups, taking into account the size difference between my breasts.

      And to tack on from someone who is a US 42G, foam is hot! I have lived in the Midwest and the South of the US and I had more issues with sweating and overheating while wearing a foam bra. Also had to wash them so much more due to that so spending minimum $50 USD I wouldn't even get a full 6 months out of them before they were completely ruined.

    Wow, this was so validating! I haven't used a wired bra since I got pregnant ten years ago…when I stopped wearing them during pregnancy and breastfeeding it was impossible to go back! I don't have much fullness, but need a pretty wide underwire. Which seems like a size that doesn't exist. Good to know I'm not the only one missing my size. But I’m not sure if I’m ready to make my own though. Maybe I’m doomed to sports bras for the rest of my life. 😅

  • @Ninjozata
    @Ninjozata 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Re foam and larger sizes. I think its because foam isnt as forgiving, and the more mammory tissue youre workong with the more variation as well.
    For example, having an 'omega' shaped breast, where the tissue is more voluminous than the root, but the root itself is more narror than i widest diameter of the tissue. Very common in some more fantastical styles of augmentstion (ie cakes on a plate type clevage)
    So having a stretchy cup allowes for a more shape varistions to be covered by the same cup pattern

    I have had the exact same issue - as have many others - where according to standardised sizing, I am a 75B, whereas in reality that very rarely fits. A differently cut 70C usually fits me much better, and results in a close comfortable fit, not to speak of how much more flattering.

      also on the topic of terrible fit, when i was growing i didn't have the resources to get a new bra, so i quickly outgrew my 1 crappy bra that i'd had for 4 years, and the wire started to scar my side because of how deeply it was poking my skin. it was also made of terrible material and gave me eczema breakouts all the time :/ i stopped wearing bras after that, but now i want to make my own sets. i actually found you from your reddit post about briefs and am enjoying your content so much!

    I'm a size 80 O. Smaller chest than what people usually have considering the volume of my breasts. I live in Sweden and here the it's very hard to even get my cup size, let alone my my chest size. I have also come to the conclusion that I simply have to make my own, but no wires (since they don't make them in my size)

  • @irinasams1381

    I'm a size 85E. I used to avoid foam-filled bras because I associated them with push-up bras. I tried one during my teenage years, and I felt like my boobs looked two sizes bigger. For many years, I avoided them until one day, a lady at the lingerie store literally forced me to try on a foam bra. To my surprise, it didn’t make my boobs look bigger, and it was actually more comfortable than regular fabric bras. Ever since then, I've been wearing foam bras, and they make my boobs look smaller and more lifted. Now, I can't wait to try designing my own! I wonder if, with the added lift, the choice of shape matters. I guess the only way to find out is to try! thank you for the tutorial, do you think you will later upload the full version of the bra construction process ?

    For me it is not really a choice... I am a 70H and I am just happy to find a bra in my size in a store. Above a D cup most bras dont have foam anymore. Atleast in my country. Now that I started sewing them myself, most do have foam because I prefer it. Thanks for the video!

    • @katerivanovana
      @katerivanovana  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      An underwire Bra construction is pretty complicated there are so many different steps and almost every step affects the fit in a way. I wasn't able to put all of it into a pdf (I tried at first haha). I recommend using some of the existing patterns that are on the internet. If there would be many people interested, I might do a separate video on how to construct a bra pattern.

    hi, i dont understand how you make a bra out of 100% silk when silk doesnt stretch? Can you elaborate please? thanks

    • @katerivanovana
      @katerivanovana  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So the foam and the reinforcement are not made out of silk. Everything that needs to have a bit of a stretch is cut on bias. (That's explained in the 1.1.1 video). The band pieces are also a bit longer than they have to be, so that the elastics are eventually the ones that hold everything in place.

    • @politereminder6284
      @politereminder6284 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bras don't have to be stretchy BTW. Just supportive. Most older styles are made with non stretchy fabrics like linen and silk
