    A lathe is on the way? That will certainly open up the doors for what you can make easily. However, a word of warning: Be VERY careful about what you are doing with it. Lathes are known for causing some incredibly nasty injuries. Second: I advise using HSS tools when you are first learning, Carbide tip tools are not cheap, and will happily break, especially when you are learning. HSS will certainly be more tolerant of a learner. Also, they are cheaper, and you can grind them to do what you need to.
    In regards to the creaking of the robot, is a large amount of it from the plastic conduit over the leg cables creaking when moving?

    • @dr.castor1392
      @dr.castor1392 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well if he ever really need carbide for machining chromed shaft or other hardened steels, he can always just buy brazed tip tools.
      They are the cheapest carbide tools you can buy and if you have a proper tool grinder with diamond wheels, they get as sharp as any HSS tools!
      But he will really need a Machinery's Handbook before he does anything with his lathe.

    • @liamtwentyman7275
      @liamtwentyman7275 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dr.castor1392 Yes, very true. But certainly the handbook, and a good dose of TH-cam videos on lathe work should help.

    When the dog looks left and right at 2:24 you can see the threaded rod at the top of each leg bending. Even with the printet support it seems a little weak.

    • @jamesbruton
      @jamesbruton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's not the rod bending - the whole hip part it's mounted on is pivoting around the big yellow bearings/pivot points on its ends.

      @Tater_Lord 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @timstoev5607
      @timstoev5607 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I watch all the videos, and I checked the code base, however given its current shape, both as file structure, and code structure, any contributions are non-trivial to an extent that probably requires separate branch and much more testing on his end. This is why I posted the question above, and provided he answers positively the discussion of the topic will be moved over a different media.
      Now, how you assumed that your involvement in a direct question to the engineer behind the project is relevant is a mystery to me. Care to elaborate?

    • @jamesbruton
      @jamesbruton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The entire project is pretty much 'code samples' at the moment. The microcontroller platform and setup is subject to change completely as the ODrive firmware ads more features such as CANbus etc. My aim for now is to get it working the best I can the way it's set up now and then decide what the next stage based on the future requirements.
      You can definitely fork it, but I probably don't have time to test a completely different setup right now.

    • @timstoev5607
      @timstoev5607 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      what I actually want to try out is some ideas about dynamic stability and general control. Your last iteration on the mechanics is definitely solid enough so provided you add the pressure sensors and a couple ICU's I think I can start. I understand that what you are focusing on now is the POC phase, but I think it is nearly finished- CAN can be a nice addition, but depending on the way the stability/movement control systems are designed it may not be that efficient.
      I will probably try out some mockups on PC- I think I can emulate the mechanics accurately enough to start playing with the control circuit. At some point down the line however I will need data from the sensors to see if the model will actually work.

Not to take anything away from James, but the BD bots are far superior, not just in hardware but software as well. Go watch the latest videos of Spotmini and Atlas. If this impresses you, that will blow your mind.

      Electronimus The problem is it's not obviously ludicrous. If they were closely matched, I think most people would find it interesting to see a couple of robots fight, but the BD bots would mop the floor with this one, which wouldn't be as interesting. Open Dog wouldn't even "get a punch in". Now seeing a couple of BD Spotminis fight 'to the death' could be interesting to watch.

      He says that input inc released files and everything. yet, there arent any files on the website. (only some of the unofficial old files on facebook i think) in their FAQ they say that the files arent done. this makes me confused, im working on a fullscale nr5 right now and any "input" would be really helpful

    your gonna need to install nvidia AI GPU to get that to work better and a laser scanning system to create a virtual enviro for the dog to navigate through

    Just went looking for the Johnny 5 files first stop the the input Inc website only to find they aren't releasing the files atm and any files you do find are either counterfeits or old broken models that take a long time to fix a little warning next time would have been nice made add a pinned comment so people can see that's what's going on?

      Hi Ben, apologies for any confusion, so inputinc are still developing the final files and will release them when they are complete, there did release some of the earlier files which this one is based on, if they haven't got them on their Facebook page then you can find them on the 'i want to Customize my Johnny 5 Toy Robot' Facebook page, you'll find the cad files in the files section, feel free to give me a shout if you have trouble finding them
