I had an ischemic stroke, actually a TIA, about 5 years ago. I don't smoke, drink alcohol, or take any prescription drugs, or street drugs when I had mine.
Health wise at the time I did cardio exercise regularly every week. I was 25 lbs overweight and very A type personally. I also ate pretty good, by I ate fried foods, meats, etc.. Rarly ate vegetables and ate some fruit. I didn't realize I had consistent high blood pressure which I had since I was 20 years old. I was 53 when I had my TIA. The doctors did all the needed testing. Cat scans, MRI, ultrasound of my heart, numerous blood tests, etc... Good thing was my heart was in great condition, no blocked arteries anywhere , no dangerous plaque anywhere. They put me on 5 different types of medications including an aspirin a day. They also had a physical therapist check me out. Thank God, no damage.
Today 5 years later, I'm 25 lbs less, stress level very low, no more type A. I went completely plant based diet after it happened. I drink only water, raw garlic and honey water, hibiscus tea, and apple cider vinegar literally every day for 5 years now. I continue high intensity cardio exercise 5 days a week. As far as being on 5 medications, I'm now down to 1, 5mg daily of lisinipril and an aspirin a day. Planning on being off lisinipril in the next 6 months.
I also have a home BP monitor and check my BP twice a day, doing it since I had the TIA. Prior to my TIA, my blood pressure when checked was always anywhere from 170/90 to as high as 180/95.
About 3 months after my TIA my BP started averaging 140/85 , then as more time passed and the change in my diet, etc.. began to kick in, my BP even went down more, to 130/80 and for the last almost 5 years now my BP daily average is on the high side 119/78 , and on the low end 104/65 consistently. The consistent average lands around 112/70. You don't have to let high BP be a constant threat in your life. You have the ability without being on prescription medication , even If it runs in your family. Lifestyle changes can solve the problem, but you have to be disciplined and committed to it. And even If you're on meds, the meds will not work If you don't change your lifestyle habits. You can't keep eating the garbage, and continue to ignore getting some cardio exercise, smoke, drink alcohol etc.. and expect things to change. And my total cholesterol is 180. The doctor said my triglycerides were amazingly lower than he though they would be. All this without statins for reducing cholesterol. They started me on statins when It happened, but I was allergic to them. I got it down by diet and exercise alone. Strict plant based medditeran diet minus any meats , dairy, or poultry. I eat huge salads, 2 cups oatmeal w/ frozen fruit, honey and raisins every single day. Never felt better.

Well done, thanks for sharing! My 79 y/o brother is in the ICU right now following a TIA yesterday. My first step toward better health will be to eat salmon every week and probably limit beef to 1/week. Otherwise, I eat a huge tricolor salad with ACV daily and a fruit smoothie w/kefir every morning, along with daily exercise.

I am a 71 yr. old woman who walks all over my community. I am older than most of the other people I pass. My blood pressure is good, sometimes a little on the low side. My weight is good and so is my blood work, except for cholesterol, which is: LDL 107, HDL is 78, Triglyceride is102. I had a brief TIA in March of this year. On the scan with contrast, a 6mm aneurysm was discovered, which was an SHA. There was also a tiny one of 2mm. My cholesterol is high, a few numbers over normal. I wore the Holter monitor for 2 weeks and the results were good. At times my heart rate increased sometimes for over 30 seconds several times, but those times were when I was walking 5 miles in 85-90 degree heat.
I am on Rosouvastatin 20mg and 81mg aspirin. I took Clopedigrel for 21 days.

All this information is worthless when doctors dismiss us and send sick patients home.

    • @bradstephan7886
      @bradstephan7886 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It's also worthless when patients rely 100% on the healthcare system with no effort toward self-efficacy, i.e., sticking to a healthy diet and exercise regimen.

@@bradstephan7886 Babyboomers was the generation with horrendous diets and mental health issues. Most young folks have excellent diets and exercise, even though being a teenager or child is criminalized.
You go to a U.S. hospital and they literally serve you junk food. You attend a US public school and they literally serve you junk food.
it’s called a broken healthcare system and extremely poor leadership (it’s even worse in red states).
But I am literally talking about young, healthy adults not receiving medical treatment that freaking diet and exercise cannot fix. it happens genetically and most of the time work related (due to unsafe and/or toxic work environments)

      I was sent home.
The intern had myself & the elderly lady in the next bed hooked up to EEG machines.
We were astonished when he took out both paper reading & then switched them so she got mine & I got hers.
As a consequence she was admitted ( she had a panic attack & stated so) & I who had the stroke was given 2 mild pain killers. I was told I had migraine & was sent home by this intern.
Because it was Sunday their was no operator on duty for the CT scan to be done anyway.
I don't go to hospital now with my TIAs because they ignore me untill change of shift then say I don't know what wrong with you. I get handed 2 mild pain killers because it's hospital policy & then they send me home!
They do the same thing when I am at the hospital after have a TIA.

I have always eaten a diet with lots of vegetables, olive oil, herbs, spices, pulses & a small amount of meat & seafood.
      It wasn't poor diet.
My diet was not the cause of my strokes!!
      Domestic violence was!!!
Being kicked in the head & having my head stomped on by my now ex-husband, I would say, caused my strokes even though no medical professional will acknowledge that cause!

I was sent home the next day with no stroke diagnosis. My follow up was cancelled ( not by me). It took 3 weeks before a Dr who saw me on an urgent basis scheduled me for an MRI. It took 6 months to finally see a neurologist to explain what happened. Now I have hemianopia in both eyes and cannot drive or work. I have no faith in the healthcare system. It has been one thing after another the entire 6 months since this happened.

I disagree regarding statins. I was prescribed a statin without having a lipids profile performed. Two weeks after I discontinued the statin due to rhabdomyolysis, my total cholesterol was only 146 and the HDL:LDL ratio was high. It also caused a large increase in my blood glucose level. Statins should NOT be prescribed without knowing they're necessary!

I suffered a TIA three years almost to the date as a result of side effect ofa medication I was taking at the time to help with nerves and depression. I now suffer from memory lost, moments where were I lose my grip, I cannot concentrate for short or long periods of time, there are gaps in my memoires, I suffer mood swings and I lost most of my compassion and empathy.
It sucks and it doesn't help the depression or anxiety I already had. I have been completely socially isolated because I don't feel comfortable around people. I also don't have the drive to do anything.
I wish I had better care at the hospital I was at and the first 24/72 hours are critical but because I was only 30 years old I feel I didn't get the proper care I needed to prevent most of what I am going through today.
