What If the Sahara Desert Was Covered With Solar Panels?

  • In a world exhausted of fossil fuels, solar panels can provide a sustainable solution to our energy problems. But they also come with a couple of issues: for one, solar farms are massive, and they have to be set up somewhere that gets a lot of sunlight.
    Now, if only we had a large mass of unused land that gets guaranteed sunlight everyday… Could we cover an entire desert in solar panels? Would that be enough to power the entire world? What kind of problems could we run into?

      @@LycanSpyder12 special panels can be designed to withstand the temperature and the weather in general.
      It's not a matter of how. It's totally doable. Solar energy has been a thing for a long time, with a significant amount of money invested into the project, it could have been done even 20 years ago.
      It's all about political conflicts that make it impossible.
      Africa has plenty of resources to become a significant power in the world but their political crisis prevent that from happening.

      I thought the same. Seems like Europe and America aren’t done sucking up every good thing Africa has to offer while the majority of people in the continent continue to live in poverty and deprivation. Please, if such a method for generating electricity were to succeed, African countries should be the ones benefiting and not Europe. I did some research concerning this, and all concerns were about how to get the electricity generated across the Mediterranean to European countries that already have steady power supply. It’s quite sad especially when considering the fact that most, if not all countries just below the region in Subsaharan Africa have millions of people living in homes that have no access to electricity.

    @keithcraig506 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1299

    Wow, so many negative comments, most of which center around sand storms and the like.
    The simple fact that we are (theoretically) covering the Sahara with solar panels would already reduce the impact and frequency of sand storms because the panels themselves would disrupt wind flow. Adding baffle fences around the perimeter and at key locations within the solar farm would further reduce, if not eliminate, the impact of sand storms.
    Sand storms are created by a strong wind traveling across the desert. This requires mile upon mile upon mile of empty space that allows the wind to pick up sand as it goes. If you disrupt that wind before it has a chance to pick up all that sand, there is no possibility of a sand storm.

    • @xanthuumnihyr5319

      To produce that much silicium, maybe we could drain all sahara's sand.
      This video makes no sense, we don't have resources to produce that big of a solar farm and it would be extremely polluting to make.
      Not to mention as a massive black and light absorbing surface, it could actually warm earth or interfere in climate
      Not to mention, solar panel lifespan is rather short, especially in that kind of rough situation.
      Not to mention solar panels efficiency decrease as the temperature goes up so putting them into desert isn't a great idea.

    The Sahara has sand that provides nutrients for The Amazon rainforest
    Sand storms

  • @FLORATOSOTHON
    @FLORATOSOTHON 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    That was a German idea, I think. One of the technical problems would be sand, that will require constant cleaning of the solar panels from sand. The solar panels loose efficiency drastically if they are not clean, so a robotic compressed air system will be needed (in the absence of water in the area) to clean them constantly, thus raising the cost of the electricity produced. An other problem is the one mentioned, regarding grid loses due to the distances involved. The mentioned climate change will be an other problem. If it starts raining in the Sahara, then the desert will not be a desert for much longer so there will be clouds, meaning good bye uninterrupted sunshine. Finally, some of the comments say that wind turbines might be better. That is not correct since the sand will create serious durability problems to the fins. Imagine those huge fiberglass covered fins to be under constant sandblasting, they will definitely not last the expected 25 years of a wind turbines expected life span. In other parts of the world, wind turbines are prone to fin damage from hale as well, so the cost of electricity rises by the service requirements and much reduced life spans.

    • @FLORATOSOTHON
      @FLORATOSOTHON 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@webbtz3591 Mr. t rex in your time the CO2 content in the atmosphere was double from the one today and Antarctica was covered by rain forests. 60000 years ago, ice covered areas reached as far south as the Danube. 11000 years ago, Sahara was a rain forest. Now in our time, even if you could take advantage of the low wages, that never have the tendency to stay low once a place is developed, transporting electricity over vast distances is a bad idea because you may loose over 30% of your production in grid or conversion loses from AC to DC and back to AC, since DC is transported better over vast regions. On top of all that, in order to counter fluctuations in electric production by the so called renewable energy sources you must have 2.5 times more installed capacity than the one you actually need so that you will avoid blackouts. So automatically your production cost increases by 250% because of installation costs. Then you must create power storage installations so that you can store excess energy produced and stabilize your grid. The best way to do this is through Pump Storage Hydroelectric plants but these also add to the overall cost. The idea of using batteries is ridiculously expensive and batteries need to be replaced, usually after 1000 charge - discharge cycles.
      A possible short circuit in one of these Lithium batteries would also result in a huge bomb like explosion. If you have ever seen a high power transformer exploding, after a short circuit, it's a terrifying experience.
      With today's technology, the best way to replace fossil fuels in electricity production would be to go nuclear. However you can still use fossil fuels, by not burning them directly but by using a gasification process first, followed by CO2 capture treatment afterwards. These are mature technologies that could be implemented in a very short time, provided the proper investments could be made.

Or there is more of a potential for the destruction if our entire source of power in worldly conflicts. And people on the other side of the world would not be able to afford to have to have power travel all the way to them. Plus, again, longer distances that power has to travel, the less reliable it is. There's that saying, Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

    A video like this really does everyone a disservice by over simplifying how power is generated, transmitted and used. Part big part of the problem we currently face isn’t just how we produce electricity but the fact that it is produced so far from where it is used. One of the most important benefits of solar power is that it can be produced where it is used, almost eliminating the 60% loss that takes place through transmission. Turning the Sahara into a giant solar farm would be wasteful and almost impossible to maintain compared to producing solar power where it’s used.

    If you're talking about building a solar plant in just 1.2% of the sahara desert then only one country is concerned. Algeria or Morocco control a huge chunk of that desert and they're stable enough to make it so they can build it !

    Its actually a terrible idea. I used to be a solar panel cleaner and you would be surprised at the rate they become dirty and how much that dirt inhibits its energy efficiency. I worked primarily in Welsh mountains and arable flat lands on England and that was bad enough. Putting solar panels in a desert full of sand would require so much work to keep them clean and fully efficient. Also, cleaning them in a place so excluded from civilisation and water sources(clean de-ionised water) would require so much back and forth the costs would be insane not to mention the inefficiency of travel, especially in vehicles that traverse desert landscapes. It's just a bad bad idea.
