I love how Sokka chose the meteor to use as his sword. Because to him, it represents a moment in his life when he had felt useless, but instead of running or ignoring how he felt, he picks that moment as inspiration to never feel that way again. That meteor started his journey to becoming a swordsmaster in the first place, so it was the perfect choice. Also, IT'S A FUCKING SPACE SWORD.

    Interesting facts about Piandao.
He’s based on Sifu Kisu, the martial arts coordinator for the show who provided the styles for the bending arts.
He trained Zuko in swordplay when he was younger.
Piandao deserted the fire nation army. In response they sent 100 soldiers to capture him and none returned. Afterwards, they never bothered him again.

"I will never, ever turn my back on people who need me!" This was a pivotal moment for me watching as a kid. I was so inspired by Katara's refusal to give in to the apathy of the world. The town doesn't not matter. It's in serious trouble, and not caring is going against everything she believes in, every fiber of her being. She doesn't care how she's viewed for it, she just gets things moving thanklessly. She's "the boring one" for many for this, because doing good is the expected thing to do, except it's not really, the world constantly gives you shit for having empathy. Katara is amazing.

Some of them even worse off than this one. At least THIS one is in the fire nation. The best way to help the entire WORLD is to lay low, and defeat the fire lord, not run around causing a scene in every village because they are a wee bit hungry.

Book 3, Episode 3: It wouldn't have been Katara's mom. Kya, Katara's mom, is dead. The alternate name for this episode was "Katara and Aang Become Eco-Terrorists." Also, this episode is another great example of how Aang and Sokka only share one brain cell when you put them together
Book 3, Episode 4: The armor was a studio mandate strictly so they could make a canon "Armored Aang" toy. The creators responded figuratively with “if you want armor we’ll give you armor” and gave us this masterpiece. Sokka probably learned the sword quickly because he is canonically proficient in every type of water tribe weapon. I love that even though the Fire Nation is heavily based on Japan, the sword Sokka makes is _not_ a katana. Also, Piandao is voiced by Robert Patrick, the T-1000. I love the detail that Piandao is still teaching Sokka even in their fight. And you can see the white lotus on the hilt of Sokka's sword. And the splat at the end that Toph bends the meteor piece into was at the time, Nickelodeon's logo.

I hc Tai Lee being a descendent and later maybe even having air bending unlocked!! Air bending is all about freedom! The nomads that managed to survive could have hidden amon other nations and the next generations would have grown up not learning about their culture, not connecting to their element, living in constant fear, always oppressed so in time the descendants forgot who they were and their bending locked. But now that the war is over people can live freely and little by little the air bending would have been able to return. It would still be the damage to the world, the temples ruined, the culture forgotten, the people are not that big in numbers. But at least it would be a natural way for airbenders to return!! Instead of 'well the spirit world did it cause i guess it just does it for the balance even though it doesnt have anything to do with the world of mortals and they have their own rules and morals but fuck it we need airbenders'.

A common theory on the internet is that Bushi, the presumed real name of the character ("he's crazy" kinda tells it) actually HAD brothers, either called Dock and Shoe, or called differently. Unfortunately, the war has taken both their lives, and Bushi can't really understand that they've died and as such copes with their deaths by becoming them. It's truly a tragic tale that I could 100% see being true and I personally count it as canon for the series.

I think Korra is worth the watch. There are some hiccups primarily due to Nickelodeon behind the scenes. The show grew with the original audience, so it includes more mature themes throughout the series.
Some things to keep in mind going into it:
    - It was only meant to be one season
    - There were a lot of obstacles behind the scenes
    - It is NOT a sequel to Atla. It is a new show that is set in the same universe. If you go into it comparing the two, you will be disappointed.

Toph can bend the meteorite material with ease because it's still mostly earth/rock, just with a high iron content. the material used for Sokka's sword on the other hand has been purified, so it's likely gonna behave like any other steel. Toph could still deform it like she can with any other metal that has some impurities in it, but remember that all she's bending is the impurities, not the metal itself. the metal just bends with it, and that limits what can be done.

Sokka needed this, both to see how much his friends need and want him, but also to feel like he can contribute. He was not aware of his own worth. Iroh getting jacked is amazing and makes me hyped every time. Since you asked, at first I prefer ATLA to Korra. Not to say Korra is bad in any way. But as I watched both multiple times I come to decide that I should not compare them. They both have their own strengths and both are exceptional series. I hope you guys react to Korra after this!

Korra really is a great show. There were some hiccups in production that really messed with it, but overall it's great. It's just a very different show than AtLA. It's not easy to compare them, just two different shows set in the same universe.

I'd say Book 1, 3, and 4 of Korra are absolutely amazing, and I like her character arc more than Aang's, but overall ATLA was a better series.
Books 1-3 of ATLA were all good, with only a few below average episodes (Ex: "The Great Divide"), but Korra suffered from not knowing how many episodes & seasons they were gonna be given to tell the story.
    Personally, I'd say ATLA: Book 3 > LOK: Book 3 > ATLA: Book 2 = LOK: Book 4 > LOK: Book 1 > ATLA: Book 1 > LOK: Book 2

Love your reactions as always-even quieter, less plot-heavy episodes like The Painted Lady and Sokka's Master do an amazing job with character and worldbuilding and adding to the story rather than just being filler, ATLA is an amazing series when it comes to using downtime/breather episodes. As for Legend of Korra, its a likewise incredible series that is highly underrated. It's admittedly a bit wobblier in some parts in ways that Avatar wasn't (lots of executive meddling, sigh) but I enjoy it just as much as Avatar even if I do prefer the original series. Hope you guys cover Korra as well :)

I late to the comments but I wanted to say that I never knew the VA of Iro had passed away between books 2 and 3. The show did a decent job of giving him as little speaking roles as possible while still making him seem interesting and beloved. We could tell Iro should have been used more and more was probably planned for him than what we got in this book and beyond… his death took a lot away from this show and ultimately Iro is the reason the show is better than just a good show.
I’ll never forget Iro’s tale of Basing Se… it was what instantly made Avatar awesome. I wasn’t sold on Naruto until the vs matches of the Chuunin exams.
I wasn’t sold on One Piece until Arlong. I wasn’t sold on Bleach until… until… lol. Still ain’t sold on that.
Anyway. Iro is a seller. And when his VA died, you could tell the show reduced his character but still tried to make him awesome.

When it comes to Korra, most people seem to prefer ATLA, but don't let anyone talk you out of watching Korra. Whether or not it's "as good" as ATLA is irrelevant, as it's a whole different show that's just set in the same universe. Personally I felt like Korra had lower lows than ATLA but also higher highs - much of both is due to its more mature tone, as well as the production hell Nickelodeon put it through - and while ATLA tells a very satisfying story, it's does so in generally safe, predictable ways, whereas Korra isn't afraid of getting its hands dirty with messy subjects like politics, morality, religion, and difficult character arcs. Also there are some fight scenes in Korra that will absolutely drop every jaw in the room and SHOULD NOT be missed!

Regarding ATLA to TLOK I like both personally and while neither show is perfect (no show is) both are still really enjoyable for what they are, and there are actually some people who prefer TLOK over ATLA. That said, while ATLA had the benefit of 3 seasons to fully tell its story TLOK wasn't so lucky as they thought they'd only get 1 season initially, then they got a S2 and it was the same thing. It wasn't until S3 that they knew they'd get more than one season, and then in S4 they were forced to either make a recap episode or layoff half the staff (they obviously chose the former & it's still pretty good but still). On top of that TLOK kept getting its airings shuffled around, often to late night or early morning timeslots until eventually it got moved entirely online.
Overall both are good shows in their own rights, it's just that TLOK had the unfortunate fate of being Screwed by the Network at almost every turn, which coupled with not as good writing in some parts makes it a more divisive series than ATLA is.

I think the issue with Korra is that it's much less consistent than ATLA. When it's at it's best I'd argue it's better than ATLA but at it's worst its pretty bad. Korra also suffers from studio meddling in a way that ATLA never did... you can tell the show writers wanted to do something new and interesting but the studio execs kept tripping them up ("just give us ATLA but they're teenagers!") and it isn't until season 3 that the writers got their way and the show reached its full potential.
I think that's why you get people who both like and dislike the show... I'm a Korra fan but I can easily see why some people aren't.

Korra is great, it's just that ATLA is very great. Honestly, Korra has better villain's and they focus more on the deeper emotional plots that ATLA only hints at (due to being a new show on a kid's network and having to worry about getting cancelled for being too dark). One of the big hits to Korra though, is that for both season 1 and season 2, they did not know that they were getting another season, so they were forced to write them both in a faster manner and allow them to be closed stories.

The people of the town had to work to get the river clean, even though Katara helped them they couldn't just keep counting on some spirit to fix everything for them. That's why the Painted Lady only appeared at the end because the pollution of the river hurt her as much as it did the town and the environment.

In the legend of Korra, the absolute worst thing you will encounter is the love triangle, which includes the actions of a particular individual in it, if you can get past that, it's pretty good otherwise, there's a few plotholes here and there and convenient solutions but each season was thought to be the last so they always had to find a way to wrap it up by the end of a season.

  • @BelfryHex

In Regards to rankings: Personally, I rank Avatar as one of the top American cartoons ever made (this and Gravity Falls), or possibly best animated series ever made(including anime, just imagine the pacing here vs. One Piece, which I also love).
Korra on the otherhand - is mediocre and very forgettable, which maybe my opinion is jaded because it's supposed to be within the Avatar Universe, but it retcons a few things and ruins a some things from Avatar and dulls the simple wisdom and beauty that was Avatar. The main writers (The Ehasz's) did not move on to Korra for creative differences with DiMartino and Konietzko. So *without* spoilers: The world/setting is more bland and mundane, there are just TOO many characters and they become forgettable, and finally: love triangles. love triangles. love triangles.
The animation is arguably better, and some people argue that it's "more for adults" but I think it's just less geared for kids and people of all ages and far more focused to a more edy and very specific teenage demographic. The show's okay, but compared to Avatar, where you would self reflect on life lessons from Iroh or thinking of the greater good of being a better person, you will be focusing on plot holes of why characters didn't take certain actions, or why characters are regressing (in a new star wars kind of way), or why they didn't make decisions or why certain characters are selfish, edgy, and/or complex.

And we already knew that she is willing to jeopardize the mission as well as put people's lives at risk in the nane of helping said people (Remember Haru?).
But I do appreciate it from a world building point of view. It's interesting to see how the war also negatively affects people in the Fire Nation.

Korra is a good series, but not NEARLY as good as the original. Korra suffered heavily from studio interference. They kept changing how many seasons they would allow them and the pacing suffers heavily from that. It does have some VERY high highs, though.
