10:50 The guy from Lorna Shore, Will Ramos, did a reaction and analysis of this song on his channel (The Will Ramos) that I'd highly recommend you check out if you wanna learn how Alex does this stuff. He explained that the technique used in this part is kinda like rolling your Rs, while also doing the growl stuff. Of course, he does a much better job of explaining, but that's the gist of it.

Alex also later stated on Kardavox (I think) that it's a back-of-the-throat 'Russian' R that he's doing, and he relaxes the roll halfway into the growl so it goes 'down'. It's how you get that DIRTY chest guttural. I've been practicing to try and figure it out and gotten it ONCE, but it's VERY difficult if you can't do a roll easily (which I suck at).

Actually, Alex used ONLY reverb on the one-take. You can hear it during his warm-up where he gargles room-temp water. He's on record that the reverb and the delay (on the recording) are just to make the sound a little wider, and the pan they put on his gutturals is so the guitar and drums aren't stepping on his vocals. He's very smart and knows a good bit about how they do stuff.

    • @gamedevbrownbus2871
      @gamedevbrownbus2871 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

If I'm remembering correctly, Alex said it's a 'Russian R', and he does it in the throat, which is the other way you can roll an 'r'. Just relaxes the roll and lets it ride down into his chest for the guttural. I'd say you're 90% right. Just got the position of the roll wrong. Great reaction! Love seeing people's first experience with deathcore lol. While I'm not sure Alex has specifically talked about how he does those gator vocals at 10:50, general consensus of what I've seen and have personally speculated is that he is rolling his tongue similarly to rolling your r's while growling. You're also in luck with you wanting to hear his clean singing since he recently uploaded a vocal cover of Cemetery Gates by Pantera. Also as a deathcore fan I'm obliged to mention that you should check out Will Ramos from Lorna Shore, especially his one take vocal playthroughs that he uploads. Personally I would recommend either the Into The Earth or Of The Abyss playthroughs. Absolutely mind blowing!

That gator growl is his signature growl. There are videos comparing side by side a real gator and Alex Terrible and the only difference is: the human is doing it better lol.
This band sounds that awesome because their precise cohesiveness and most of all, for the instrumental arrangements don't overlap or outshine the vocals and vice versa.
Often the lyrics are in Russian and English in the same song.
If you want to see the Gator Man's one take vocal performance for Viking, there's a video on his channel. You won't be disappointed in the slightest.
One of the most anticipated moments at their concerts, is when Alex growls the breakdowns without a mic. Again, a ton of videos on YT shows that and it's absolutely amazing how that dude can be heard across the venue.
Glad you discovered these Russian chads. If I could recommend any of their songs, I'd say: all of them.
Side note. You'd be amazed by this: he's a self taught death core vocalist. It took him 12+ years to perfect his craft and I could say the intensive gym and boxing training also helped.

I loved this reaction. As a metalhead, it's always super cool to see people outside of the metal scene react and give their takes on the stuff I listen to, and you being an opera singer made it super cool to listen to you trying to figure out how Alex does his insane lows.
I'll also suggest, as many others have, that you check out at least Pain Remains I by Lorna Shore, but the entire Pain Remains trilogy is amazing.
Also, on the topic of "how does he do that" or like, "what's going on in his throat," The Charismatic Voice has a video on her channel putting a camera down the throat of Will Ramos, another big name in the deathcore scene right now. Super cool video to see what's possibly happening with the false folds and stuff during these crazy harsh vocals.

10:47 there isn't much to it, he rolls an R while growling with a certain mouth shape so that the tongue can still reach the roof of the mouth but still have space in the back of the mouth for a beefier resonance

An upload Alex did that would give a pretty solid idea of his raw vocals is the 6yo vid titled "Alex Terrible practices clean vocals". Its just him in his room screaming along to Tony Danza.

Deathcore ballad is "Lorna Shore - Pain Remans I, II, and III". Not to take away from Slaughter, just sayin' "a ballad".

Bro, i appreciate this type of reactions where a professional can breakdown and talk about some stuff he competent in, not just smiling in a cam. Thanks for it, keep it on!
And for Alex's clean (at least not guttural) vocals, you can chek this video: ALEX TERRIBLE - KATYUSHA. Also, you can chek shorts with him recorded on a phone, without any enginering.
btw, you right, russian part of lyrics sounds really clear and understandable for native speakers

A big portion of where the roar sound comes from is mostly mouth positioning amd tounge placement. It usually requires a larger amount of diaphramic pressure the get the texture to the sound.

As others have said, a Deathcore ballad does indeed exist! Lorna Shore's song Pain Remains 1, 2 & 3 is actually one lengthy song that flows into one another. There is a supercut on youtube combining all 3 seamlessly with lyrics. I've listened to it like a 100 times by now and it makes me cry every time, without fail

The guttural rolling sound he does near the beginning of the song is just his normal growl with rolling his tongue. The manipulation of sounds in metal vocals is pretty much the same as regular clean vocals, its shifting the sound around with your throat and mouth (pause). Gutturals usually are lower resonance with a slightly more closed mouth and a curled tongue to really reverberate the sound inside the mouth before it actually escapes the lippies
Love your insight as a clean vocalist and your speaking voice is butter. Keep up the good tings Peter

According to Will Ramos, the alligator growl that Alex does is created by him trilling/rolling the R while growing at the same time

As crazy as it sounds a lot of the sounds you have trouble understanding the mechanics of are created by shaping the mouth and vocal tract, but he has a mastery of understanding of what shape to make his mouth do get these crazy effects that only a handful of people in the world have

  • @nightshade7240

Gutturals are done by the tunnel throat method. You arrange your anatomy so that everything is in position over your throat and then you open your throat. It's different on an internal than an external but you can actually slowly tilt your chin down or up to change the depth of the sound. On an internal you can also staccato your breath to change the resonance. If you look at the angle of Alex head and watch the movement as he performs the "roar" it gives some indications of how he achieves it but everyone has different physiology. How you move your tongue, even subtle shifts of it can create very different sounds, a lot like throat singing in that regard.

Native speaker. I clearly understand everything he says except the weird accent in the word «говорить» that he repeats twice in the end of the beginning of the song. This has more to do with the rhythm I guess. If he didn't stretch that phrase it would be less weird.
Basically every time there's a bit of Russian in their songs - it's just as clear as if he just said those things normally.

The low guttural in the beginning of the song has been termed the “gator growl” it’s a deep guttural while allowing air to make your tongue roll. Like how u roll “R’s” in certain languages.

As for the drums: "double bass" means that you either have two bass drums with one kick each or one drum with two kicks. One for each foot. So every hit this drummer does to the base is done with a move of his left or right foot. Might want to check out one of the ElEsteparioSiberiano drum videos if you're interested in how it works.

went to see them last year, ive been to over 120 metal shows, it was easily in the top 5
the best way I can describe the gutteral to you as a part time for fun vocalist, is that its like making a dog bark. if you breath out like you are trying to fog a window to clean it, add some constriction and distortion with the throat and tongue shapes to alter the pitches between low and mid low

I don't think alex terrible has any clean singing stuff, but if you want to see a good comparison, listen to Will Ramos of Lorna Shore's music, then you can listen to his covers he's done. They have clean singing.
Might want to save this stuff for videos though.
