Is this the end of Dior? Should we all forget about buying luxury bags? Will you still buy Dior?

  • Hi there, I'm Eileen. I have owned my Lady Dior bag for about 12 years and have been using it on a regular basis. By no means am I a loyal Dior customer, but I had always been impressed with their customer service. In my previous videos, I had repeatedly talked about the fine craftsmanship of this luxury French brand. Well, things have changed it seems. Recently Dior has been exposed for outsourcing their production to firms that mistreated their staffs. For years, Dior had been advertising that their pieces were made by professional artisans, but the reality is quite different. Would you still do shopping at Dior? xx

I feel like Dior is just one house that got caught. Think of what other houses are doing. Cost cutting and increasing profit margin has been becoming increasingly obvious since covid. I haven't bought any luxury in last 2 years and happy to use what I have. If anything, get custom made from artisans. ❤

Dior is so tainted for me now that i am selling my bag. Dior is not even near being elegant when they treat other fellow human beings so disgusting. I dont care if other brands to abuse workers. This is supposed to be a luxury brand and people over pay for every items. For the price Dior is charging, i dont want to even hear speculation of abuse of workers...

I’m a Dior fan, not only of their pieces and the amazing service, but the history of the brand and Monsieur Dior himself. I was lucky to visit the Dior Museum in Paris and his work was breathtaking.
Unfortunately a lot of fashion houses have this issue and having worked in retail for many years I’m quite aware that production costs and what the item sells for are two worlds apart.
Recently I’ve been taking a step back from most luxury shopping and even considering downsizing my handbag collection. It just doesn’t spark joy as if used to…

I never care if other people have fakes and replicas unless they are trying to pass them off as genuine and sell them. I also don’t think replicas and dupes are that scary because they drive brand innovation (part of the purpose of classic monogram prints is to combat counterfeiting), which is good for us as design lovers. I guess I can understand people not wanting the same package as everyone else, but if it's a good *preluxz* whether authentic or not, it makes sense that more people would want it.

If I might be honest, at this point I see all luxury business as one big scam! I think that Dior is not the only luxury brand that is not treating its employees “luxurious” so to speak! All the idea of designer items so unavailable and limited while many are actually having it is simply not attractive nor worth the price anymore!
Personally, I’m glad I have sold majority of my bags and designer items and I’m left with only what I really use and need… and even now I am truly tempted to actually sell even this last few pieces just to be done with all this charade! Lovely video Eileen 👍🏻

Overpriced bags and other items are leaving a bad taste for many reasons. I find them abusive to the workers and financially abusive to the customers. I think many of those so-called luxury brands are going to be facing a reckoning. Customers are finding other brands that are more unique, higher quality, and fairly priced.

Excellent points! $57 is 2.11% of $2700! That’s just a horrible, horrible joke. I can no longer purchase from luxury brands. I’ve never been into bags, but I have 100+ pairs of shoes. No more. I haven’t purchased anything in a few years. I have my clothes made now. I’ve set aside money to have a few more bespoke bags made for me by individuals I can see and speak to. I have enough shoes!
I agree, Dior will survive. There will always be people willing to pay for status and for the “privilege” of feeling special in a luxury shop. There’s no way to get around the fact that the materials and labor are just a small fraction of the cost of the item.

I completely agree. I strongly feel that my dollar is my voice and I try to always use it in ways that I think are helping people.
I have felt that D&G is run by unkind people that I can’t support. And I feel the exact same way as you do, Eileen, about Balenciaga.
This news actually taints the entirety of LVMH for me and even potentially taints Dior’s beauty side (which I had recently been excited about about and found to be of good quality).
I feel that high prices or being stocked in high-end stores can no longer be a shortcut to judging a brand to be a responsible citizen of humanity. Now more research is required to ensure I am purchasing responsibly.
I had recently been eyeing some Dior pieces but my husband thought they were ugly and he has an unerring sense of quality. I wonder if he didn’t really think they were ugly but instead was seeing with his intuition more than his eye.
Take care, everyone, and have a good day. Remember: we’re all in this life together. So help each other as much as you can.

I'm surprised that this is news for anyone. I remember finding out years ago, about the Chinese/ immigrant factory workers in Italy.
I have only one high end bag, an over 20 yrs old vintage, and have no plans on buying anymore. I'll stick to the mid range, low key (no or minimal logos). There's really no quality difference either, anymore. They all outsource the production, or exploit (immigrant) workers in west.
I also already have more bags than I realistically will need for the rest of my life.
Most people in western countries now struggle with paying mortgages/ rent, bills and food, so "Will you still buy Dior" is a first world problem for those out of touch with reality, sorry. Buy a bag for 5K, or pay the rent for a roof over your head for 6 months? Tough one.

I'm not condemning anyone who still keep buying luxury. I don't condemn people who buy from Temu, either. Everyone seems to exploit workers, more or less. Sure, it creates jobs. Workers should just unite, and demand human rights, better working conditions and pay. I'm not a communist lol, but if you're poor, desperate, hungry and alone, you're an easy target. One factory, one country at a time, just stand up.

Well let's just face it. If we are having an abundant life, who cares whether the bag is super expensive or not. They will still buy it. However if someone is living from hand to mouth everyday, even a fake Dior bag will be too costly for them to purchase. So brand or no brand depends on the affluent people. Affluent people will still buy the branded goods because of their financial abundance.

Italy is a first world country. Similarly, to other such countries real Italians have not done manual labor for generations. You only have to spend Christmas time near Italy’s eastern border to see the seemingly never ending convoys of workers going back home to Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and other Balkan countries for the holidays. The myth of luxury products being loving created by experienced artisans has always been nothing more than a myth.

It’s not just luxury, this is across the whole of fashion. I’ve actually unsubbed from some of my favourite TH-camrs because they were showing constant hauls from Temu that they had been gifted. I didn’t want to have cheap goods at the cost of someone’s comfort and safety. Unfortunately many of the exploited workers have nothing if the sweatshops don’t employ them 😪
Over the last two years I have pledged to become far less materialistic. I only buy preloved but I am also gradually selling all my vintage bags etc I don’t use. The world is heading in a direction where things like handbags will be the very least of our desires and concerns!

    Not surprised...
Never had a proper appreciation for the style of Dior. The busy fabric was an acquired taste.
However, when mixed with the metal, hard wear and leather, it looks much better.
The actual production cost is $57.00, WOW!
That is why luxury brands are mad at knock off bags (off-markets).
The off-market bags have the same type workers that are creating their brand at a fraction of the cost.
Keeping what is previously owned, but will check the sales price for future decisions.
In truth, the styles and designs are getting better, or maybe their styles have just interests my mature taste.

unfortunately, luxury brands outsource many things (product production, photo campaigns, brand content etc). and these outsourced companies pay the human resources (employees, freelancers) how much they are willing to, more than often underpaying them so that they get a maximum benefit. usually, there are multiple countries involved so it's difficult to get the local labour law to be applied (foreign production in a given country). these are illegal practices that just go under the radar. if you dare to talk about these injustices as a contractor/employee, you are just terminated. even if you alert the main company, they just turn a blind eye and help you get kicked out. luxury industry lacks empathy for all their workers in house or outsourced.

My brother's girlfriend sews these designer bags in some warehouse in Riverside county,CA. The brand sends patterns. She would make these and when they were approved by the design house after inspection, she would have to destroy the sample bags and the team would start production.she didn't make enough to get medical insurance. Suddenly, the machines used for this purpose were allegedly somehow illegal to use in California so the work was sent an area closer to MEXICO 😂😂😂. I can't imagine what those poor workers are getting paid. Brother's girlfriend job no longer existed. She laughs when she sees people with these bags and wonders if she was the one who made it😂.Do a Deep Dive on LUXURY EYE GLASSES. THAT'S A REAL SCAM😂😂,

Luxury brand will endure as long as people continue to desire stuffs.
Luxury brands do not cater to needs, nobody needs them. They cater to desires. Nobody desires cheap stuffs, the more expensive, the better.
So, luxury brand will price their goods as high as people will pay. The problem is not with the luxury brands, the problem is with the people who buy them.

Excellent point! $57 is 2.11% of $2700. That is extreme exploitation of their customers, and that’s something they can’t deny or pass off onto suppliers. That markup is their business plan!

This is just so disgusting. I'll never buy another item from LVMH because of this. While I'm not surprised, I am very disappointed. You might as well buy a fake, but I wouldn't even do that now and give them free advertising! To charge these prices for products but they are now showing what it is actually costing them as well as how they are treating humans all for a dollar? Pass. I might as well buy a bag at Walmart now.
