- Today, the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation held a hearing to receive testimony on the US Airways Flight 1549 Accident. On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 ditched into the Hudson River at approximately 3:30 pm following a double-engine failure while in route to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. There were 150 passengers onboard and five flight crew. All 155 people onboard survived.
Thank you for your courage and honesty Captain Sullenberger. You have my deepest respect and admiration.
We need more Sully for this whole world.

Sully has it all--is well trained, articulate, intelligent, courageous, compassionate, dedicated, yet humble. In short, darn near perfect. We won't see his equal in the airline industry if what he says about the economics of the profession plays out as he said it would. The next water landing won't have the same result.

I understand your point. Well taken. That said, you're still missing the point. He wasn't asking for pity. He wasn't complaining about his work. His point is that we MUST continue to keep pilots well trained and paid proportionally for their work and training. If we don't invest in training and smart pilots, ATC personnell, we risk everyone's safety.
And today's Transportation Sec is A DISGRACE compared to this man!
as a fellow airline employee, I couldn't agree more. We have had to endure extrmely hardtimes for 8 years similar to those that others have been experiencing recently. And it is so true: we have acted as human ATMs for airline executives that provide 3-5 years of failing service, and leave with multimillion dollar pensions that are funded by our own enormous loss of pension benefits, and a 40-45% salary cut in 2002 that has never been reinstated.
A man of conviction and honour. Cant say enough for all involved. Salute to you all.
The only comment that I can make to Capt. Sullenberger's testimony it this;
When we work with Managements, manufacturers, government agencies and politicians, we ultimately cannot let desk jockies tell those of us with experience how to fly airplanes. There are a lot of desk drivers that make policy and procedures that just don't work in the real world. As Capt. Sully said the single most important piece of safety equipment in aviation is the pilot, and thinking human being.
jockeys. The problem is that some mfg. now make the aircraft in such a way that the computer does the flying. Is supposed to. It's not like the old days when my father flew the line and men flew their own airplanes without the aid of computers.
Whoever disliked this is a bully there is no reason to dislike a video displaying a perfect hero

Airlines were failing like crazy in the 00's. Pensions were one way companies tried to stay afloat, and sometimes they went anyway. Pilots are still trying to get their pensions back, from my 10 seconds I spent to Google this.

Like Sully, my pension was terminated. My pension distribution is now in the hands of PBGC. My new pension distribution was reduced by 81%. That’s NOT what what I signed up for. That’s NOT what I was promised by my employer.

Also the importance of union representation cannot be overstated. Some organization must be overseeing airline safety besides management and the FAA, which consist of a revolving door of airline executives that value business
above safety, and are constantly being lobbied by big business interests.

Boy, it's a good thing this Jason Bell character wasn't on the team that investigated the crash. He seems to have "all" the facts. If he had been, Sully would have been thrown behind bars.

In my view if Sully had some 500 hour cadet, with no real experience as a co-pilot things wouldve been a lot worse
He kind of did, that is why Sully took control of the aircraft. Jeff Skiles was an experienced pilot, but had literally just gotten out of training on that aircraft. That series of trips was his first ever flying that type. So, in the scenario you described, with a fresh cadet in the right seat the outcome would likely be the same. This is because of Sully's excellent CRM (Crew Resource Management). Sully knew that he had far more experience flying that aircraft, but he also knew Jeff was way more familiar with the emergency checklists as he had just gotten out of training. Having 500 hour cadets flying alongside 20,000+ hour Captains is the only way to produce the next generation of 20,000 hour Captains.
Edit: I should make it clear, that was in no way a slight towards Jeff Skiles. Jeff probably could have done exactly what Sully did with a cadet in his seat too...he actually has more total flying hours than Sully. Just in that situation, where one flies while the other runs checklists, Jeff was the best choice to run the checklists.
What we don't see is, at the end of his speech, Kayne West burst up to the microphone and said 'yeah, but Beyonce had the best video of all time!".

I enjoyed working for United Airlines as a mechanic but management started gutting our pension and pay after 9/11 and filing for bankruptcy. Captain Sullenberger and I have something in common. We've been raped by the airline management.

US Senator John L. Mica asked Chesley Sullenberger in a Feb. 2009 US House Aviation Subcommittee hearing, the first Congressional hearing on the AWE1549 flight, if he knew about any past or current operational problems with the CFM-56-5B engines on his A320. Sullenberger replied "No."
The engines were listed in two Emergency Airworthiness Directives, the first published in 2007, for in-flight stall events due to deterioration of the high pressure compressor stages and the #2 engine on his N106US tub that landed in the Hudson, stalled over Newark, New Jersey 48 hours before the splashdown, flown by a different crew. Irregardless of any accurate maintenance log entry, Sullenberger was 100% aware the engines were defective. .
"splashdown" is properly referred to as "ditching" and there is no such word as "irregardless". Use "regardless". Inflight stall events were not the cause of the incident, it was BIRD INGESTION you nimwit.

The engines on Sullenberger and Skile's A320 had two Emergency Airworthiness Directives published against after an alarming series of in-flight compressor stall events and hydromechanical malfunction reported by operators that culminated in a double in-flight stall by an Air France out of Tunisia.
The compressor stall cause was diagnosed and identified as irreparable inherent mechanical defect contained to specific high pressure compressor stages. The engines were unpredictable, stall-prone lemons; not from the manufacturer's doing, but the FAA ordering a post-production redesign to survive a one-off 6lb waterfowl ingestion. The forced reverse engineering begat two offshoot fundamental deficiencies that resulted in stator damage and deformation. All software fixes failed and the last option was an N1% limit of 88. So the flight crews of all Airbus fitted with these engines observed a directed max. 88% N1 on the takeoff roll.
The #2 engine on Sullenberger and Skiles A320, compressor stalled 48 hours prior while flown by a different crew.
The airline, in compliance with the EADs, was supposed to swap out the defective turbojet unit and replace with new or mechanically sound. It defied and cheaped out by replacing one temperature sensor. Sent the aircraft back to LGA without incident. 90 seconds airborne into the very next cycle in clear skies to 3500', now operated by Sullenberger and Skiles, the #2 re-stalled.
Sullenberger knew about the EADs, previous stall and new sensor replacement, all logged, therefore lied through his teeth.
Jason Bell You're missing the point. It doesn't really matter if the engines were defective. They were working just fine until they hit birds. They may as well have been perfectly functioning brand new engines that had never had a single issue ever on any plane or on any flight, and those birds still would have taken them out.
Appreciate your civil response. When an 8lb-10lb goose is ingested through the fan blades of a turbofan engine spinning ~3500rpm the bird is blendered and its blood, the primary organic component, is slammed against the inside of the nacelles around the outside circumference of the blades, leaving an unmistakable blood ring that, so strongly adhering, no inrush of river water at 135-140kts will rinse clear.
The engines, after craned ashore, still attached to the aircraft, were spotless as all photos reveal. As was the entire aircraft. There was not one dent or scrape visible after N106US came to a halt on the Hudson to corroborate the bird strike story.
Sullenberger claimed that geese filled the windshield "top, down, left, right." causing him to duck down. Some of these, in compliance with the laws of physics, would have to hit the windshield. If any geese are right in front of an aircraft windshield moving 175-180kts, some would never avert impact, There was no blood on the windshield.
The Smithsonian published photos of CFM employees examining one of the engine fan blades, calling one of the employee's ziplock bag containing a yellow 3M Post-It note pad bird remains. The extent of deception appears to have no limits.
Collisions between aircraft and birds, inaccurately called bird strike, occur when neither participant has any reasonable opportunity to see and avoid, and why the majority occur at takeoff and short final.
Skiles and Sullenberger had 4nm to identify and deal with a huge flock of geese, if the story is true, that were constantly at their ~12'o'clock and neither lifted a finger or made any recorded verbal remark until, allegedly, the last possible moment.
The #2 engine experienced a HPC stall two days before, The unit, in defiance of two EADs, was never repaired or replaced. If stalls once, it'll stall again and again. If the other engine is in the same predicament, it too will stall. The engines didn't need any birds to lose thrust.
The primary point of all this is that Sullenberger knew the #2 had stalled 2 days before and about the two EADs published against, making his response to Sen. Mica absolutely and knowingly FOS. .
Oh jesus I just had to google "flight 1549 conspiracy". The internet never ceases to amaze me. There are people that think it was supposed to be some kind of catastrophic event but the captain "foiled" the plan by landing in the water. I've seen it all. Shouldn't conspiracy theorists stick to things like Apollo, 9/11 and Flat Earth? :P

BUT, I came to this vid because the title says he is testifying about flight 1549. I was expecting to hear the details on the incident. Whilst yes, he is doing a testimony at the hearing of the incident, this video is click-bait in the sense that the uploader of this video has led me to believe he will be discussing the incident. He is not discussing the incident, he is discussing all the things that are wrong with the air-line industry and nothing is said about the incident, except Cpt Sully selflessly praising his co-workers. 😍
Like I said before, he is a hero and I have the utmost respect for him and his crew, but this vid is deceiving and the uploader should be ashamed. Re-title the video so as not to mis-lead people as to what they are clicking on to watch.

I was told by a pilot for a famous Australian Airline starting with 'Q' that the management's fuel policy on long haul flights is cut so fine that in many instances the plane does not have enough fuel to 'go around'...meaning they have to land 1st time, or the plane cannot go around and complete a proper approach to land safely....meanwhile the CEO gets millions on $$ in bonuses even when the company loses money! Capitalism.

That pilot was lying to you or being disingenuous. We have plenty of fuel for our destination , unforeseen holds, alternate airports, etc.
What were they testifying about? What did he do? He saved their lives.
During this period of time Captain Sully was under investigation by the aviation accidents investigation crew. They believed that Cpt. Sully could have made a successful landing on the runway of Teterboro (New Jersey runway across the Hudson river), or Runway that was stationed 7 miles into NewYork City. They also stated that the left Engine that was labeled destroyed during the duel-engine failure, was actually in working condition, but regardless of all accusations against Cpt. Sully's performance, it was later found out through test simulation test that Cpt. Sully made the best decision and BOTH engines were in fact DESTROYED. He and his crew went on to go down in history for their bravery and valor with medals to prove that.

his comments would be better if there were not a string of videos on air crash investigations that come down to pilot error as the main cause.. Pilots sitting happily chatting and eating dinner as the autopilot flies the plane, pilots who cant seem to make a visual landing in good weather but need the ILS system etc.
blame those (like Scarebus) who think computer should fly and override the aircraft. The pilot has to fly now according to the manual which says let the computer do it. But thank God for people like Sully who still know how to fly!
