Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

    • @liesdamnlies3372

Also the engineering of the aircraft. The Airbus they were flying was programmed to keep the aircraft within the flight envelope where it was just on the verge of stalling, making it easier to maximize their glide and make the landing as gentle as possible (which isn't exactly gentle by any definition but no ditching ever has been). Ultimately the perfect execution of that glide kept the fuselage intact and let the engines be ripped-off more-or-less cleanly as designed.

A passenger said there was no people panicking. Shock? yes but no panicking. They managed to all make it out to the wins and a waiting lifeboat.
One of the flight attendants was badly Injured when they hit the water. A beam from the cargo shot into her leg and she still managed to keep everyone calm and get everyone braced for impact and evacuated, safely.
The pilots knew what they were doing. They couldn't turn around and were losing lift fast. So they couldn't coast to a surrounding airport. They wouldn't make it because once the engines go,so does the electricity. They turned on the ECU and managed to radio back to tower and landed safely in the water.
No water traffic and the Hudson is often patrolled. So they were evacuated safely and taken to the ferry terminals.
The red cross gave them coats and sweaters out of closets because it was the coldest day of that year.
      They're heroes.

Sully's water landing is an incredible example of survival thinking. The speed with which Sully and Skiles adapted their mindsets in response to the changed circumstance (normal take-off to emergency engines failure ) is astonishing.
In survival conditions, this is known as "re-writing the [mental] map." The faster you do it, the faster you start making life saving decisions. Yes, airline pilots are highly trained to do so. Still, this is a note-worthy response.

Reading the CVR transcript showed just how amazing Capt. Sullenberger and 1st Officer Skiles were at thinking outside the box. From the time the birds were spotted to the water landing, only 3 minutes, 23 seconds had elapsed. The Quick Response Handbook (QRH) they have next to their seats only assumed losing both engines would happen at cruise altitude (most likely to fuel starvation) and so the QRH checklist for "both engines out" was long and detailed. By the time 1st Officer Skiles would have completed the re-light checklist, the plane would have already impacted terrain or water. So they improvised with positive results.

Legend has it, the original pilot flying that plane, was Chuck Norris. When the plane struck the birds, and it lost thrust in both engines, Chuck panicked. His head dripping sweat, his breathing intensified, he had no idea what to do. When all of a sudden, a hand touched his shoulder, and he heard someone say "Step aside son, I'll take it from here" Chuck looked up, and there stood Chesley Sullenberger. Chuck was so embarrassed, that it's been kept secret the entire time.

I love that he's totally embracing the fame. He still has the "humble hero" thing going on, but also isn't guilt-ridden about cashing in on it. Good speaking voice, too. Good for talks shows and junkets.

OK, it's just possible that good fortune smiled on the crew and the plane landed uncharacteristically well on the water that morning BUT Capt. Sullenberger is still an incredible man and he and his co-pilot achieved the IMPOSSIBLE. That's the very definition of a superhero!

In WWII, there was an effort to develop water landing protocols.
They gave up, as it was simply impossible to predict what would happen.
That, and the planes tendency to break up on hitting the water..

+Truvak T he meant the stall prevention system, the glide path of the a320 had showed clear evidence of system kicking in, preventing itself from stalling. Of course, with out the Capitan, it will still be impossible

    • @truvak
      @truvak 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

now on the other side, if a less experienced or less capable or a different captain without balls of steel had try this (even with all the advancements of the A320), he might be dead now, so it was a pro driver being able to save his life (and many more) because his car has a pro level handling.
