  • Here is a video about flat rides. I compare 3 different cymbals: a Paiste 1970's thin 20" 602 flat ride, a Paiste traditional 20" flat ride and a Dream Dark Matter flat ride.
    The hihats are 1950's K Zildjian and the drums are 1982 Gretsch Centennial.
    The stereo microphone is an AKG C24.

    beautiful musicianship and a wonderful kit. I always appreciate a balanced drum kit that's been thoughtfully and carefully put together over time. Interesting to hear how the rivets offset some of the quick decay the paiste flat rides are known for. Glass!

    The rivets sound really nice with brushes. Helpful, thorough video, thanks!
    Is it true that the inventor of the flat ride cymbal won the No-bell prize in Music?
    I'll show myself out now. ;)

      @@rickdior Love Paiste Flat Rides...Had 602, Traditional and 2002 (Black Label)...IMO, the 2002 is best ride I ever played, and I played Flats from Bos/Agop/Mehmet. After all, Paiste 'invented/ the flat.
      Love your videos, Rick. Thank You!

    These cymbals sound fantastic, and you play them so well! Nobody really talks about how to play a flat ride, so I really appreciate you making this video. I have one flat ride, a Zildjian K Custom Flat Top Ride. It's similar to a 602 Medium Flatride, the one Jack DeJohnette used to play in the 1970s and early 1980s. Do you have any heavier flatrides? Paul Wertico played the 2002 Flatride, Sound Creation Dark Flatride and the Signature Flatride, which were all on the heavier side of medium. Paul also had a 602 Thin Flatride with two rivets. I think the contrast of lighter and heavier flatrides can work well together, particularly if you're in the rare situation where you can play ECM-style jazz.

      Paul Wertico plays Dream Cymbals now. He's actually playing that 22 flat earth ride as his main ride.

    Hi Rick, great playing, I was wondering where you get the rivets, what type of rivets do you use, also how far in from the edges do you place rivets in general on a cymbal?

    • @Mat-ll4gu
      @Mat-ll4gu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, a whole video from Rick about choosing and mounting rivets would be great!

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have a large bag of rivets I got from Zildjian many years ago...nothing special, just regular cymbal rivets. I also have some brass rivets I got from Paiste but those are generally too soft and light to use in all but the thinnest of cymbals.
      As far as where on the cymbal to put them my general rule is anywhere between 1 and 3" from the edge depending on the thickness of the cymbal. If its a swish I put them closer to the edge since the cymbal turns up.

    Hey Rick, have you put together any listening playlist of artists on Spotify? When you reference certain grooves/places I often recognise the patterns - but I often don't have a depth of musical context to really understand the language and overall feel in context as my listening is limited in those areas
