Wall-flow diesel particulate filters usually remove 85% or more of the soot, and under certain conditions can attain soot removal efficiencies approaching 100%. Some filters are single-use, intended for disposal and replacement once full of accumulated ash. Others are designed to burn off the accumulated particulate either passively through the use of a catalyst or by active means such as a fuel burner which heats the filter to soot combustion temperatures. This is accomplished by engine programming to run (when the filter is full) in a manner that elevates exhaust temperature, in conjunction with an extra fuel injector in the exhaust stream that injects fuel to react with a catalyst element to burn off accumulated soot in the DPF filter,[3] or through other methods. This is known as filter regeneration. Cleaning is also required as part of periodic maintenance, and it must be done carefully to avoid damaging the filter. Failure of fuel injectors or turbochargers resulting in contamination of the filter with raw diesel or engine oil can also necessitate cleaning.[4] The regeneration process occurs at road speeds higher than can generally be attained on city streets; vehicles driven exclusively at low speeds in urban traffic can require periodic trips at higher speeds to clean out the DPF.[5] If the driver ignores the warning light and waits too long to operate the vehicle above 60 km/h (40 mph), the DPF may not regenerate properly, and continued operation past that point may spoil the DPF completely so it must be replaced.[6] Some newer diesel engines, namely those installed in combination vehicles, can also perform what is called a Parked Regeneration, where the engine increases RPM to around 1400 while parked, to increase the temperature of the exhaust.
Diesel engines produce a variety of particles during combustion of the fuel/air mix due to incomplete combustion. The composition of the particles varies widely dependent upon engine type, age, and the emissions specification that the engine was designed to meet. Two-stroke diesel engines produce more particulate per unit of power than do four-strokediesel engines, as they burn the fuel-air mix less completely.[7]
Diesel particulate matter resulting from the incomplete combustion of diesel fuel produces soot(black carbon) particles. These particles include tiny nanoparticles-smaller than a one micrometre (one micron). Soot and other particles from diesel engines worsen the particulate matter pollution in the air and are harmful to health.[8]
New particulate filters can capture from 30% to greater than 95% of the harmful soot.[9] With an optimal diesel particulate filter (DPF), soot emissions may be decreased to 0.001 g/km or less.[10]
The quality of the fuel also influences the formation of these particles. For example, a high sulfur content diesel produces more particles. Lower sulfur fuel produces fewer particles, and allows use of particulate filters. The injection pressure of diesel also influences the formation of fine particles

I didn’t think the PDF’s are so expensive any more. I challenged a Peugeot main dealer about this. £1200 fitted for a Partner HDI. I said nope, I’ll go elsewhere, get one and fit myself. Dealer then say they can supply me a ‘spurious’ one. Ahh you mean a pattern part that’s half the price and comes out the same factory. Yes please! £220 later, four bolts and a play on the laptop later, it’s fixed. £1200 my ar@e!
Great video this one. I’m sure at a main dealer that would have been a DPF and a pipe mind.

My Renault Kangoo 2 (2019 1,5 L diesel K9K) had the same issue. One day the engine went into full error - I guess the soot had reached a high level and on a hot day, the temp reached 700 C in the DPF as I was stupid enough to let the car drive at 900 RPM (took the gear out to cruise 200m) coming into a crossroad - that probably caused lack of gas movement in the DPF (keep the gear in so you have at least 1500 RPM pushing the gases - so that the DPF won`t overheat while you drive the car) that was already too full of soot and the temperature sensor maxed out - gave an error - also an error with the DPF dif. pressure sensor (which may have been there for awhile - me unaware of it - the engine light was on - but it is so general that it can be an ABS fault also - if you don`t have a Fault Code scanner - you have no clue). I changed one of the two pipes and the sensor (DPF differential pressure) was fine (I had bought a new sensor also but did not install it in hopes that it was not necessary - I used contact cleaner on the sensor opening after removing the tube). I used the opening of the pipe (while installing a new) to put in DPF cleaning liquid from a bottle of aerosol - went driving it for 20 min at 3000 RPM - it cleaned the pipes - the exhaust gasses from behind the car came out like 4x more powerfully after the drive (it is like soap - gets the accumulated carbon out - which normally cannot be burnt, only soot turns to CO2 and gets out of the DPF). Then a mechanic with a diagnostic computer cleared the error - and it started to regen itself as in order while normal driving. Then I got a diagnostic computer myself and saw clearly how it starts the Combustion mode and how the level of soot in the DFP goes down as does the differential pressure while I drove 90 kph on a highway. No eco mode button on, and it was visible that while normally the car takes 4,5 L/100km, then during regen or i.e. combustion mode - it took 7 L/100 km about 8 minutes (start looking at your fuel consumption - it is the only indicator that the Regeneration is happening). I kept driving on the highway till the fuel consumption dropped to 4,5 L/100kgm again, as I did not want to ruin the regen. It took me 13 hours to change the tube, with 2 flashlights with magnets, tools secured with lanyard, so they do not drop behind the engine, a mirror on a stick, and only one hand barely reaching down there (no freaking room for even pliers !!, used my fingers to get the metal squeeze rings open and self-made hook around a finger - made from a wire), before that I had taken open the window wiper cover metal, it sucked - the worst and hardest job I have done in my life, but it worked. So 1. Get your own fault scanner - so you can see what the fault code it is. 2. Use the scanner to clear the fault code after the fix. So it will start to regen again by itself. (If you don`t clear the sensor fault code, the regen does not work - official Renault manual tells so also. The ECU keeps on thinking that the sensor is not fixed even if you have fixed it physically or its tube.) 3. Use the scanner to confirm that the regen is happening (and the car is not a ticking time bomb - accumulating soot until 100% and goes into error). I use Delphi 2021 (10b) program (and a physical scanner piece - the Delphi program`s drivers manage it) on a laptop - works excellent from Aliexpress and shows live data and with a push of a button records the parameters you choose during a car drive - displays them later in a graph. A freaking miracle. Stop being a victim of mechanics who are not transparent about their business. Get yourself a scanner.

For ALL DPF's is the need to empty a small can/bottle of ANTI crystalising fluid to every time you fill the AD-BLUE tank. This agent IS to stop the ADD-BLUE from making crystals that can & DO block the exhaust/BLUE sensor & cause some very expensive repair bills. For a few £ you can avoid these HUGE bills.
If you dont believe me, then just spill a few drops of AD-BLUE & watch how it crystalises.

Just had this on my 1.6 tdci cmax. Hose had split and put the car into limp mode. Sorted the hose but it wouldn’t come out of limp mode. Apparently it needs to have the values reset on the ECU cos it remembers the old values where’s it got sent into limp mode. Also the hoses are £££. It’s a high temp hose. Replaced it with a high temp fuel line.

⚠️To be fair though, some garages would simply replace the DPF sensor.
Some come with the pipes so in this case the fault would be ignorantly cured because they would have concluded the sensor had gone bad & not realised the actual cause !!!

Hello, thanks for the video. I have Fiat Bravo 2008 1.6 multijet diesel. The car keeps regenerating way too often even after EGR repair and unstable idle repair (which was from the Throttle body electronics). When I scan the DPF I can see that sometimes it is about 31-38% but also very often there is a log which always states 64% and 107k km exactly. Can it be a fault in some DPF sensor or something stuck in the software? The car has power and good fuel consumption. Thanks!

    Hello Sir…
Could a DPF (2017 Jag F-Pace Diesel 2.0 US Spec) leak exhaust into the cabin?
If the filter inside the DPF canister breaks apart, would it sound like set of Headers?
Can one buy the actual filter and replace it inside the canister, or must one buy a complete DPF whole?
My F-Pace had exhaust in the cabin. While driving somewhat hard, the quietness instantly changed to the sound of Headers. I looked at the DPF plumbing while the car was lifted and all the pipes are solid. So, I’m thinking that the the filter inside the DPF exploded.
    Your thoughts, PLEASE.
    Thank you. Mr DJ

Lol it seemed all to familiar, the hoses, the sensor. And it was my model of Mondeo! Hoses were changed by the previous owner to thicker more resistant ones, no wonder why, probably destroyed by the heat/soot like in this case. Very very poor design on Ford's part. But DPF overloaded came on my dash. Hoses robust and ok. One hose seemed to not be fully plugged in, so first thought it was this. But the error came again. Then I saw on OBD diagnostic that my pressure sensor is showing basically constant 104kPa. That's atmospheric pressure! So I unplugged both hoses and still the same pressure. Wires measured ok. Hmm tried to blow with my mouth to one end of the sensor and the pressure in diag changed. So it seems the electric connection or SW if fine. Probably just faulty sensor. So I changed it and boom, 0-5kPa ! Problem solved ! Most likely blocked by soot or simply failed.

Hello, I have a Ford S-Max 2010, 2 l engine. 6 months ago, the message "engine Malfunctions" appeared. I took the car to a mechanic and changed the DPF, then injection unit particle filter regeneration, then exhaust gas temperature sensor, then exhaust pressure sensor.
After all this it kept giving me an error and I took the car to the Ford representative where they changed it Turbocharger Boost Control Valve, turbo pressure solenoid valve and Turbo Converter Solenoid Vacuum Valve.
After all this, he did a DPF regeneration for me, but the car still gives me an error. The people at the Ford representative advised me to set it on fire.
Can you give me some advice? what can I do to them?
I also bought a tester and put it on the car and it gives me the code P 244C-00 "Exhaust temperature to low for particular filter regeneration.

The car saw me an alert of a car and a key. The pc of the mechanic saws problem 1901 sensor dpf.
The turbo of the car doesn't work.
    The problems maybe are?
    And the solution maybe what?
    Give an advice
    Thank you

Here's a question lads.. I found a totally torn dpf pressure sensor hose (one at front of dpf not rear one).. Would this stop a static regeneration from taking place!? Ford s max with P246C P2463 and P2463-C codes.... Soot accumulation etc.. Limp mode. Can't Static regen. Presume it's this torn/useless hose?

Some food for though here. I am having repeated dpf warning light issues with my 2011 CRV despite it mainly doing long motorway journeys. The first cleaning lasted 25k miles and then it went again and Honda ?Reset? it and I got 200 miles and nearly home! I had it cleaned again and then 2000 miles. I have had 2 failures after long motorway runs in cold weather and often when I lift off the power from quite a high throttle setting. I shall check pipes and the switch now. I love the car in every respect otherwise but this is getting on my tits now. 🥺

Its also showing there is 0g of soot in dpf
Eml is on but the dfp light isn't just wonder what this problem could be

Wear is the dpf hose located? Ive had the problem for a year now, constant alarm going, it used to clear after every long drive but as of last week the dpf warning sign has stayed on. I did think it might be something more to do with a pressure sensor etc as it's been happening for so long with no actual driving problems.

I mate you can get caught very easy with that Because then you would only look for problems with certain mileage and you might forget and miss problems it's best as to always check it regardless of the mileage
