Illuminating the Ocean with Sound

WHOI's new research vessel Neil Armstrong is equipped with an EK80 broadband acoustic echo sounder. It uses a wide range of sound frequencies to give scientists the ability to identify and distinguish among different types of marine life in the depths.

An Amazing piece of machinery, however I am always a little doubtfull on impact of sound waves in an environment where sound seems to be one of the major communication channels as well as orientation for animals...

How interesting! If I may ask, what range of frequencies is usually used? Are any frequencies avoided or perhaps some are absolutely necessary?

usually between 38 - 200 Hz depending on the target species
