We often think of the ocean as a quiet, peaceful place, filled with animals that don't make much noise. So when I went diving in the ocean for the first time, I was surprised at how rich the soundscape around me was: you could hear fish nibbling on coral and squid swimming past you. But more than anything, you could almost always hear the hum of a boat engine. It's part of a big problem in the ocean right now. Ship traffic noise has doubled every decade since the 1960s - and it's wreaking havoc on marine life.
This video was made in collaboration with Twenty Thousand Hertz, a podcast that dives deep into all kinds of stories about sound. Everything from "who's the person behind the voice on your phone," to "what do other planets sound like to our ears?"

Now that is true. Coral bleaching is bad Expecialy around Japan and Florida. Its mainly caused by sunblock in the water, also septic spills. Thats poop water from poor maintenance from factories and ships.

They're literally having to scream over the sound of boats to converse with one another. Imagine us having to shout at each other constantly, every single day, just to be heard.
      It's sickening.

Mi We're still finding ways to reduce the noise from ships like the engines or propellers and also finding a way to drill for oil in a less animal populated area.

Meanwhile, an alien diplomat just signs a bill that deems this method okay for humans and people applaud in agreement... Poor poor fish xD

My sister is a researcher on the effects of sound population in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of the UK, and the effects of noise is devastating. The amount of massacres of dolphins and whales is increasing at an alarming rate. Entire groups of dead dolphins are being washed up on Cornish shores as a direct result of human created noise. This is a massive problem we need to address and so I thank you Vox for making a video about this topic

Copy paste from my comment expanding on what I mean when I say this is thanks to capitalism: "People that don't hate capitalism after watching this need to sit down and think about what's actually going on. This is the worst thing ever.
It makes no SENSE to ruin our planet like this when the money needed are IN THE SYSTEM! The problem is that the top 1 or 2% has almost all the money. If they (I'm talking the huge corporates with aaaall the money) didn't take all the money that THEY DONT NEED! That they're just SITTING on, and put it into green alternatives like solar power and electrical cars and ending the meat industry/fuelling more lab created meat. Ending world hunger, and much more, basically fixing all the problems capitalism CREATES. Imagine what a better world we would have.
How are people not seeing this."

This was... incredibly distressing to find out. I felt increasingly more anxious while watching the video, especially with the bit on dolphins. It really sounded like they were screaming but being drowned out by a disinterested, uncaring third party. Thank you to Vox for once again, giving me answers to questions I didn't know I had.

All seismic vessels need 6nm clearance from this tows. As an ex deep sea mariner I can confirm the increase in seismic survey vessels - there are many if them working the deep seas - something unheard of say 40 years back. Lot of traffic on high seas and I realised that I was seeing less and less marine life on ocean surface ( whales / plankton / dolphins) - I am talking middle of atlantic and pacific and Indian oceans.

Deepak Raj, actually, you would need fossil fuels to create the electricity for the boats so they create just as much pollution as petrol engines, and the batteries needed to run them are also worse for the environment than the typical metals and oils needed to run them. The lack of engine vibrations would help with the sound pollution though.

why is this the first time i'm hearing of this, and this video came out 4 years ago. there was so much evidence riddled throughout this video enough to make anybody reflect and yet this is something that most likely hasn't even reached mainstream media in the way this important info should. thanks vox for making me care.

I would never of even thought that this could be an issue. The seismic surveying blew my mind and I can understand easily how that could hurt these mammal populations.

If people are really concerned then stop complaining about how they're ashamed of being humans and do something like reducing the amount of petrol and diesel we use, the amount of CNG, Cfcs , start using renewable sources of energy, etc

I always lay on my back in the water to finally hear nothing but the waters sound. But I never experianced this. It is always so loud underwater... never will be relaxing as we wish it to be.
I am happy for my dad who never uses the motor but always sailes with sailes.

2:36 Sound travels on longitudinal waves and are measured from one corresponding part to the next. However, you guys depict a transverse wave here, and measure it from crest to crest. Sorry, I just has to notice!

What people need to know about the decibel thing is that if something gets 10 decibels louder, let's say from 50dB to 60dB, it gets 10 times louder... That's insane.

Nearly all human activity has a negative impact on nature and its other inhabitant, especially at the scale at which we operate. It's great to see videos that try to raise awareness around this fact
