      Amen. I enjoyed this suspenseful and engrossing film more than most sorry excuses for thrillers of recent times. It pulls you in and spins a web of mystery that's deeply intriguing. No violence, no jump scares, no blood. Gobs of atmosphere and suspense. So eerie. And what a fun tribute to science fiction; it felt like a love letter to Rod Serling and Ray Bradbury and H.G. Wells ... including the radio station's call letters, WOTW.

    I don't feel like you explained anything, just described the movie
    Anyways this is what I think happened:
    As the old lady said the aliens distracts us from knowing the truth hence the basketball game happening at the same time.
    Both Fay and the guy (can't remember his name) were chosen from the start to go to the ship and everything that happened was controlled by the aliens to make this happen.
    The lines said by the old lady is meant to test if people are being controlled which is why she was saying it when they walked in, to test them.
    The couple in the car was being controlled to carry both Fay and the guy to the alien ship which is why the "spell" was broken when the guy played the tape of the old lady saying the lines I mentioned.

    I actually think I have a really cool theory if anyone wants to listen :)
    In the end we see Fay and Everett holding each other but we don’t see Maddy (the baby), and afterwards we see many ashes on top of the recorder where they were standing. My theory, and hear me out, is that they just wanted the Maddy and incinerated Fay and Everett. The old woman’s kid heard the alien words and walked out to get taken by the “people in the sky”. Maddy was ALSO a kid who had a single mother and was probably very isolated from her tiny town. And the old woman said that was the target. But Maddy wouldn’t have been able to walk out to a spot where they could take her in. So the aliens orchestrated the all of the things that Fay and Everett did to take her in! The babysitter had seen the UFO hover near her house and called Fay to tell her. Fay then took Maddy with Everett and rode with the other couple who told them to get in, to the exact place with they wanted. You can later see that the couple is affected, and “possessed” by the alien words but not Fay and Everett. The “people in the sky” could only take in people who were “possessed” by them, so they wouldn’t want Fay and Everett. So why would they go through this whole process just so Fay and Everett could be burned to ashes? They wanted MADDY!
    (And if Maddy was in the middle of their embrace she could of been taken after... idk no ones gonna see this comment)

      But if they were vaporized wouldn't the recorder at the end by damage or vaporized as well.. your theory tho is quite good cause thinking about it all of it actually falls into place and at the end the baby was gone and they were still there cause they couldnt hug each other that tightly with a baby in between them.. but hey could be the writers error who knows very nice movie tho.

    This movie isn't asking too much in interpretation, but I think it has wonderful story-telling and dialogue; Everett and Fay were simply awesome. The portrayals of their characters and their times had a richly detailed veracity to accompany an unabashedly fantastical space alien abduction storyline. Fay on the switchboard - smoothly and properly connecting the front and rear patch cords, responding to supervision lights, hitting the switches to apply ring tone and connect parties through, without making a point of it, just a young 50's operator working her muscle memory... but at the same time capturing small-town operator culture and still playing her part in a sci-fi story. I loved it. Great acting. I can only imagine the actress, Sarah McCormack, thinking "they didn't really ever make phone calls like this, did they? It's nuts!" the whole time. The movie is worth it just for the dialogue and flow. Don't worry about the ending; just enjoy the show.

    I liked the part where Fay was describing gadgets that would happen in the future as small talk. I by pure chance watched it the night it came out, not knowing anything about it and expecting nothing more than basic nightly entertainment, and boy i really enjoyed it, I thought it was a pretty neat flick. The next day i looked it up out of curiosity and found out not only that it was the director's first movie, but that his budget was so low that it wouldn't even cover one day of shooting for any of Disney's crap fest. This of course placed it on a completely different level, which demonstrates an unusual level of talent and ingenuity. Not only he succeeded into making a pretty common story feel fresh and captivating, but he did so with severe limitations, which in turn happened to be the driving force behind it, since the tricks and "hacks" used (hacks in a good way) pretty much make the movie.
    This proves that good writing and directing are all it takes to make a good product, so while Disney throws hundreds of millions at shit like Artemis Foul, shit that nobody will remember in 5 years if not for how bad it is, actual creatives make great shit for the price of one day in The Mandalorian studios. Epic.

      fire is more often a sign of civilization; civilizations can be both benign and hostile.

    I think the couple in the car (who looked up at the sound of the recording), and the son who disappeared are some type of hybrid alien/human beings. Both Faye and Everett reacted to the couple LOOKING UP when the recorder played the alien words. Okay quick fun fact about the long take showing the layout of the town, there are atleast 2 cuts that are blended in well. I went on google maps to find the location of the switchboard, the road they walk on between the school and the switchboard, the highschool, and the radio station, I realized that the IRL locations of the switchboard, and the school are in the same town but much farther apart than they appear but the radio station is in another town IRL also fun fact, since filming the movie the building used as the radio station has been demolished but the industrial area next to it is there IRL and showed me where the building was with some help of old street view images. The cuts I could make out in the long take are when the camera passes next to a house between the switchboard and the highschool cutting to across the street from the school, and then when the camera pans in the gym to the window there is another cut where we switch to across the street from the industrial area by the radio station. All in all it’s very smooth editing. Also you can faintly see the tracks of the go kart carrying the camera from previous takes as the shot is progressing.

    But in my opinion, Faye, Everett and the toddler are all dead, reduced to Ash either by the engines of the ship or some weapon, the same as Hollis (remember Mabel said the ground was dry and dusty?). The dust we see at the end is all that's left of them.

    Pretty sure they were all incinerated. Maddy may have been abducted, and Everett and Fay were just manipulated to get her there, but someone most definitely got ashed there. The tech used to incinerate them may only affect organic matter, hence the recorder is still there. The footprints (which seemed paradoxical when I first watched it) suggest that "someone" came by afterward to dispose of any evidence. Walked through the ashes to get the camera and the tapes from the recorder (which itself was too big and cumbersome to bother with). In the end, the only witnesses not under opposition control are dust on the wind. Years later people in the town may ask "Remember when those kids disappeared?" They might speculate, and everyone will have their own theories, but ultimately it'll be dismissed as something as unimportant as "Was it squirrel or a chipmunk?"

    I think the movie ending was open ended, allowing the viewers to make up their own minds of what happened. For me, even though there are two piles of dust, I believe they were abducted. Something that I took notice of was that earlier at the radio station there was a record of Peter Pan. That was the tipping point to me that the ending was benevolent.

    • @BuShips
      @BuShips ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll add this as a reply instead of editing. I’ve had the night to think on this more and I’ll add this. I believe that the two piles of dust were not cremated ashes, they were pixie dust from Tinker Bell (seriously!). Maddy was already being held so two piles of dust with all three taken. The Peter Pan record album was new in 1958 (November 1958 according to the director was the film setting). The album includes the song “You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!” In the 1953 Disney movie (according to many sources on the web but watching the film it says 1952), the three kids can fly only after pixie dust is placed on them. Also, the flip side of the record is Alice in Wonderland. We have what is described as a tornado, so I’ll include The Wizard of Oz. The “tornado” takes the three “up” the rabbit hole and on to Oz and Never Land. There is also a character named Susan Oliver (Vina from the original Star Trek series). As long as I’m mentioning Star Trek, at the end of Star Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country, Kirk says “Second Star to the right and straight on ‘til morning.” This is from Peter Pan. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. 😀

    • @BuShips
      @BuShips ปีที่แล้ว

      Watching Peter Pan 1952/1953, Peter Pan says “All it takes is faith and trust… and DUST. Pixie dust.”

    • @BuShips
      @BuShips ปีที่แล้ว

      To add to the Alice in Wonderland clues, in the NYT interview video Andrew mentioned going “down the rabbit hole.” In addition, I think, if you watch the official movie teaser it begins with a cat (kitten) painting behind Fay. In two later views, the cat “disappears.” So is this a Cheshire Cat? In the finished film the cat is always there so they used discarded takes (without the cat) in the teaser supposedly. But like I mentioned, the trailer begins with the cat there so I believe this “disappearing” cat was an intentional clue.

    • @BuShips
      @BuShips ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as The War of the Worlds (the radio station is WOTW as others have mentioned), both Peter Pan and WOTW were released in 1953 (!). We have a “General Mann” that is covered in dust after a nuclear bomb is dropped on the three Martian war machines. He is a “two star” General so I can combine two things that I have mentioned before. “Second star to the right and straight on ‘til morning” and Star Trek “To boldly go where no man (Mann?) has gone before.” After all, he WAS covered in dust. 😊

    • @BuShips
      @BuShips ปีที่แล้ว

      I have more to share regarding the Cheshire Cat theory of mine. Billie says things like “hidden details” and “that’s where you have to make the jump.” He then says “It’s something talking and then disappearing” and “something very high that we can’t see.” Like I thought before, this adds to my Cheshire Cat theory. Also, as to the footprints disappearing, in the 1951 Alice in Wonderland film the Cheshire Cat (while invisible) walks around Alice and “makes a jump” up into a tree. The footprints stop, just like in TVON. Hmm, as I typed this I noticed “TV ON.” Oh, in addition to the disappearing kitten only in the official trailer the radio (voice) next to it also disappears. This is all important.

Another connection between the two films is the transition from B&W to color.

    Let us not forget the JJ Abrams (copout) mystery box. Keeping your audience guessing makes good cinema but not having an answer at the end revealed... you get a movie that is a hollow shell. Then you get film students who critique the daylights out of a film and analyze it like it’s got so much more in it. I’m not saying this wasn’t a good film, I’m saying film critics and analyzers put about 500% more into these films then what they actually have. “Ambiguity” in interpretation can be a copout hack of un-originality instead of profound ingenuity in cinema. Just look at Donnie Darko and Southland Tales, worshipped but not worth adoring, hollow shells by hair-brain filmmaker Richard Kelly (who knows longer makes films but just cry’s about Trump on Twitter). Kelly was later exposed fo the hack that he is, convoluted plot points with no coherent answers. In your face cinematography (lifted blacks and long takes) doesn’t make a film great either.

    Disappointing. This should be titled "A Synopsis of The Vast of Night". The ending was not explained here. We are merely told and shown what happened on screen, which could be interpreted several ways.
    Honestly, I don't get why all these _Ending Explained_ channels on TH-cam always give a synopsis of the flick and why they treat their viewers as if we did not even watch the film! 😄No one sane would watch an ending explanation video without first having viewed the movie. We're just here for the ending. And this did not deliver the goods.

    We see burnt grass and trees in the forest at the end before the three characters are gone. Then we see a recorder on what looks like Ashes. The characters unfortunately were incinerated. I really don’t know why these Aliens would do it. What’s the point of killing some random people?!

  • @mojorocketman

    Unlike the Twilight Zone, there wasn't a closing narrative explanation. It was definitely inspired by Spielberg especially the spaceships. One thing I can appreciate is they kept the movie period correct as far as the 50's era and social norms of the time, except the of course the design of the spaceships looked too 80's. 50's flying saucers usually look more like aluminum hubcaps or something very Mid Century Modern designed. Too many shows are ruined by making it "Reimagined for the Modern Audience". And the cheerleader outfits were generally between knee high up to the mid thighs, but long ones right down to the ankles also existed more in the early 50's and for your typical conservative God fearing small town which would be correct for this movie's setting... The costume designers did their homework!

    Question I have not seen: what was up with those 2 random guys crouched in the dark in the beginning in the locker room. They sent that woman to go find Everett/ Emmit. They called Everett into that dark room and apparently they wanted someone else named Emmit. They said they thought Emmit worked at the radio station. Then Everett brushes them off and the movie continues.

      I don’t think they were incinerated. It doesn’t make sense. The tape recorder would be incinerated too and there wouldn’t be footprints leading up to it either. There was a lot of wind(like the wind the old woman was talking about when her son was taken) when they were taken. I think it was just dirt kicked up by the wind.

      sentient_mimi 16 - you’re right, they were not incinerated. They were in a burnt field full of ash to start with, and the pile of ash around the tape recorder was just that same ash piled around the only object left behind after the humans were abducted. Plus, why would the aliens incinerate them, when abducting them also keeps them quiet, and provides more subjects to study?

    • @eden20111
      @eden20111 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lmao they weren’t incinerated... all 3 of them were abducted. So what you’re saying is through the whole movie, the aliens attracted them to the field just to incinerate them? Makes zero sense 😂😂😂😂. Also that was DIRT on the ground that accumulated when they were being abducted. Notice how there was a swirl of wind going around them like a tornado. That’s what caused the mound of DIRT in that spot.

    Funny references with word play: Everett, Ever ET.. WOTF, war of the worlds.
    On a side note: people in the sky reminded me of a documentary about the sky people and Aztec's people with helmet sculpted in stones, and also a spaceship landing terrain. Does anyone knows the name of that documentary?
