This is my BIGGEST issue with this series. The fights could have been so much more fun if he had enhanced his fishing pole and had a crazy heavy weight on the end or something, but instead it just disappears one day and it’s never thought about again
I wish Gon developed a hatsu that worked like his fishing rod, pulling objects or things towards him, and it would be pretty similar to Hisoka's bungee gum. Showing some parallel between the 2 battle happy boys
Wouldn’t it be possible for Gon to make a hatsu similar to Zeldris’(from 7 deadly sins) magic ominous nebula, kind of enhancing the air/space around him to create a vaccuum. Simply to draw his target in to hit them with rock
Gon is the shonen main character, thrown into a world when he's a side character. Which means the plot doesn't warp to make him the star. At best he gets lucky and is surrounded by way stronger people who have his back. Even when Gon"wins," he always needs help.
That makes him more believable and relatable. He's still a child after all and he was facing murderers, psychopaths, a mafia and a world threat level of (a)ntities. Not even the most talented 13yo could handle that when he only really started his training like 1-2 years ago.
Hunter Hunter feels like it was originally an experiment to try out making a manga where every character has main character energy and could be fully explored and the author decided "might as well full send it straight from the start." It really feels like it spiced uo the typical set of rules in just the right way
I always felt the scene where Gon names Jajanken was comedy gold. From his stuttering. To Knuckles misunderstanding a stutter as a play on words. To Gon then going along with it. To Killua's incredulous reaction in the bushes. Perfectly paced comedy :D
Eventhough Gon is not the most popular he still shouldnt be replaced as the primary protagonist. He fits the roles of protagonist and I think his popularity rating isnt an indication to sideline him in the universe.
I do really wanna point out that for the last fact, Gon explicitly states he and Noko never really got along, so Killua is his first friend his age, which pretty explicitly says that he doesn’t see Noko as a friend(Gon and Noko supposed to be the same age). He doesn’t dislike her obviously but that’s what he says. The editor even shows the page. Just wanted to point that out.
Personally I feel like Gon is replicating what his father did to some extent. In 1999 version his aunt tells him that she was "friends" with Ging, but more of following him. And would get lost, as you know, Gon also played in the forest as a kid. So maybe, or I assumed it would be interpreted that things are happening again with the next generation. First Ging and Aunt then Gon and Noko, also it seemed like the aunt liked/likes Ging so...
@@Sesshomaru474 i don't think she likes/liked Ging. She was just a kid looking up to the closest thing she had to a big brother. And she's pretty family oriented which means she'd obviously resent him for leaving them.
Gon is definitely one of my favorite shounen protagonists. I mean the popularity polls were all held in japan only and as far as I know they also all happened before the chimera ant arc so Gon's time in the limelight didn't even happen yet back then. I am really surprised tho that Gon managed to surpass Hisoka in popularity when looking at these polls. I'd really love to see how a global popularity list would look like.
I hear that Japanese audiences really don’t take kindly to villains as much as western audiences do, so that probably plays a factor in why gon beat hisoka
I think Gon is highly underrated as an MC. Definitely better than Kurapika so I don't get those polls, in my opinion. He's got so much room to grow and the Chimera Ant arc was just the start of a brilliant development but Togashi never got out of hiatus.....
I also have the same belief. I truly believe gon hasn’t lost all of his nen. But gon has changed, his mentality isn’t so innocent or pure anymore. So if gon does come back he’s going to have a different nen type and it’s something I’d love to see
I 100% agree Gon has always been more compelling to me then Kurapika. It might just be because Kurapika went from 0 to 100 with nen in order to fight the spiders but not even just his powers but fighting wise Kurapika's fights are a little dull since he can have just about any ability where as every other character shines because of creative use of the abilities they have and are limited to.
I kinda understand why hes underrated tho. Gon is awesome, his full of hope and childlike happiness. Hes basically the ray of hope in the fucked up hxh world but it gets a bit dull. Kurapika is amongs the favorites because of his dark past and unshakable determination to avenge his kin. Killua went through a lot of shit too and is generally an awesome guy. Meanwhile gon is "only" looking for his dad. Yet I'd be very sad to not see him in the show again because he embodies the whole adventure part of the series and after such a traumatic event he sure changed and got some mental scars which makes him way more interesting then he was before.
@@ivanik8 gon wasent “only looking for his dad” your underselling his character...he was also looking to understand what it meant to be a hunter - and why his dad chose that life over raising him. Killua didn’t even have a purpose until he met Gon. Without gon’s presence Killua would have stayed on the path his brother wanted for him. This guy ain’t getting enough credit
the "cougar's man" part of gon would add another depth to the character, imo it would imply he actively choses to percieve the world the way he does in spite of experiencing it in so many, let's say, "adult" fashions that would raise his maturity level significantly I think
Will he make a Part 2 to all of his 'Nen Explained'-Basic-Videos though? I mean, theres literally enough for all of them. Nen is still big enough for at least 30 more videos.
That just reminded me of them doing both my boys, Leorio and Kuwabara dirty. And then they both wanted to become doctors. Maybe Togashi just doesn’t like doctors. Kind of ties in with his health issues really.

What i love so much about gon is its obvious he is a child and i like that he brings a sense of fun and humor to lots of scenes, not only that, we are learning through his eyes that there is more than your average way to deal with life problems and challenges and see light and dark in different ways too cause he is growing up. What i think people might get wrong is i dont think gon has a 'dark side' or at least not in the way people are making out to be, especially as the series progresses. Its shown that gon will do anything to protect the ones he holds dearest to him, and in fact he posseses more power to protect those he loves. He blames himself for kites death which if you remember (he is still a child) and death of a close loved one can be a lot to process (especially being there present and watching a father figure die). He calls on a crazy amount of power out of anger and sorrow for avenging kite and to protect future friends. If you call that power he possessed and wielded as dark and evil, i dont think so, his emotions are actually very normal and justifiable. His dark energy i think is condensed rage... Thats it. I love gon he becomes more dynamic with more layers to him as he progresses and grows, which he should. I like kurapika but i think his character is flat, just bent on revenge already talented, already pretty powerful, already basically arrived in full form with little building on character. Leorio is fun but again he wants to be a doctor and his personality i think is rather flushed out. In my opinion killua and gon are perfect because they are opposites; gon expirencing darkness and living in harmony with it, and killua finding joy and experiencing a life of light after growing up in darkness. That's my opinion though :D

@CaptainAwesomesworld i would love that too but not so much about fighting.. else put him a place .. a meaningful conversation after losing kite. What would happing after that? I think hisoka vs pitou would be great matchup tho. Cunning flexibality vs rar power Edit: what if not bisky instead hisoka train them in the knuckle training segmente
Gon was the reason I stuck around with this show...I can’t believe such a complex character would be over looked. Eff what anybody says Gon was one of the best protagonist I ever followed
Now that you mention it with #9, Gon really does display more spatial and situational intelligence than most people give him credit for. Though I have always noticed his innate ability to manipulate people and conditions to his benefit, even without being a nen manipulator.
I'll always have my little theory that gon is not a traditionally conceived human boy and is more like alluka than anything else. That part of him came from the dark continent, or he's like a fraction of Ging that was split off from him through some nen wizardry.
Gon is my favorite. I never understood the love for kurapika tbh like power wise sure, cool powers, but personality wise? Gon blows him outta the water In my opinion. But ig im in the minority.
While Gon may have showed underwhelming results on popularity polls, I hope that isnt the driving factor for Togashi to write him off the series as Gon has a huge amount of potential as a character.
Imo Jajanken is technically an ability. It’s very basic of course, but the combination of scissors, paper, and rock into one attack does constitute it being a hatsu. During the Knuckle fight Gon also demonstrated being able to deliver a 2nd Jajanken right after the first without needing a proper charge-up.
Are you still reading Black Clover and Jojos? I’d love to hear your final thoughts on Jojolion, if the ending changed anything about the part for you. I’d also like to hear your opinion on the Spade Kingdom arc currently.
Gon is not my favorite but his transforming was smth else. Also Gon elevates other characters and storyline by being simple like saitama does in one punch man.
I hope this series actually gets a revisit, look at how amazing DBZ is now. this anime actually has a story, convoluted as it is. Poor Gon no justice and no peace.
Caught me by Surprise there Glad I'm not the only one living in Australia with the even more Dangerous than our Crocodiles & Snakes being our Politicians. Glad I still continue to follow your channel
Just discovered this channel and totally love it. But I do want to disagree with a point you made. You said that Gon doesn't have a nen ability and that his techniques are just standard applications of Transmutation, Enhancement, and Emission. I actually disagree. He has a condition and pays a cost, he has to say "First comes rock..." and get into a specific stance. Knuckle even comments on how the activation cost would be a setback in a fight. I realize why we could say that's it's not *really* an abilty, but I would argue that the power output is much higher than Gon would be able to produce if he had just started practicing the same techniques without the phrase and stance (how much?idk). just a small point i was thinking about. anyway, love this channel, been watching the one piece one for a while now~
i feel like after this current arch, their going to chill it out and we can get a glimpse of the rest of the characters- i have a feeling that gon losing his nen and the new world opening up w/ many different powers, as well as a great-(great?) grandfather survived and might still be making a book w/ some unknown ability to do so after a few century's? i feel like gon's going to come back really strong (character and story wise) and re learn a new element to the world that no one else can
2:17 Canadian here, I've only very rarely heard Zed instead of Zee. Though I do live in Alberta, which is like the Canadian equivalent of Texas, so maybe that plays a factor.
a character referring to gon as being 12 while he can't be isn't really a continuity error unless that character would know gon's exact age, and i'm not sure who of the characters actually would??
Gon may actually be the most interesting protagonist ever. Definitely the most different kind of child battle shonen protagonist but probably even well beyond that category. He's hard to define and so he's hard to understand. This may make him a protagonist that less people can relate to. He displays a large breadth of characteristics some of which are very endearing (hence why he is not the most hated character in HxH) but some of which are at very least highly questionable (hence why he is not #1). I actually really like characters that make you think about who they really are and why they do what they do. :)
Best protagonist is Luffy. Gon is meh af, it's a a empty she'll whose only clear characteristic is that he is some sort of genius. Honestly the mist uninteresting protagonist in the show.
Gon is straight up the best protagonist in the Shonen genre, hes way better than someone like Luffy for sure lol, Luffy is just trash anyways, he is worst than the typical Shonen protagonist.
@@folo7595 you didn't use a sine argument to back that up man. You justikc "Luffy bad Gon good". Done even waste your time if youre gonna comment shit like this
As a huge fan of both Hunter x Hunter and One Piece, the 2 idiots above are the worst types of people to encounter on both the internet and in real life
btw in the English dub, Gon straight up says the cougar line instead of calling them fanatics or something. Its still disturbing, but it is also hilarious to hear a child call women cougars.
I think part of the issue with Gon was that he was essentially a relic of the story’s original tone and genre, in that Hunter X Hunter was clearly initially conceived as a much more classic Shonen-style story at the beginning as you’ve mentioned in other videos, with a classic, Shonen-style protagonist. However, as more characters appeared, the plot became more complex, and the tone of the story began to shift, Togashi was left trying to contrive ways to continue to make the most Shonen-esque character interesting amidst all the other incredibly deep and cleverly conceived characters introduced throughout the story, hence Gon’s swan-dive off the deep end during the Chimera Ant Arc, and culminating in Togashi clearly going “fuck it” and making the next arc almost completely about Kurapika, while writing Gon out of the story almost entirely. The introduction of Nen didn’t do Gon any favors either. Nen, as a whole, is one of the most incredibly deep and layered power systems in any anime and manga series to date, introducing a system through which almost anything imaginable was possible; transforming your life-energy into lightning to give yourself super-speed powers, creating a fist-fight mechanic based on compounding interest loans, giving your life energy THE PROPERTIES OF BOTH GUM AND RUBBER!!! So much is made of the endless potential of Nen, and we see countless examples of characters doing incredibly amazing things or developing abilities that leverage their creativity or canniness. For all that we’ve made a running joke about Hisoka’s Hatsu, one can’t discount that, for an ability that seems, on paper, to be so purely one-note, Hisoka gets an unbelievable degree of mileage out of it just because he’s just that creative and clever in how he uses it. Meanwhile, Gon was basically chosen to develop the stockiest of stock-Shonen powers; mega-punch, samurai sword, and ki-blast. Once again, this was largely because, even when Nen was introduced, it seemed that Togashi still had some more classic-Shonen ideas in mind for Gon and gave him classic-Shonen powers, only to realize later that this just made Gon come off as hopelessly generic in comparison to all the other wild and crazy characters and powers in the series. He tried to salvage things by introducing a Rock Paper Scissors aspect, but that only served to mitigate things so far. And thusly, Gon fell out of favor.
This reminds me I actually still don't understand, how did Gon's arm already healed after severed by Pitou? An episode after that we are showed Killua carrying little Gon with long hair, with TWO of his arms intact. Is it magically healed or what?
Earlier in the series hisoka has his arm severed and repaired by a nen user(one of the spiders). Probably something similar happened to gon. - hunters do have access to almost everything
@@kpola1 I don't think that's the case. There's literally nobody in the forest beside Gon and Killua (and dead Pitou). No way they can find someone to reattach his arm in mere minutes.
I think Gon not getting the 1st place in Poll, can be fixed with timeskip and a little update on his appearance, maybe kindda how Ging when he was younger
The sub translation I watched for HxH 2011 also called those women cougars, so maybe the one you mentioned was censored. A lot of subs now a days end up censored or weirdly "localized", so I would assume that is probably the case for the line changing cougars to fanatics.
Here in the Philippines when Hunter x Hunter televised in 2000 killua and kurapika is also the favorite character but rewatching it now i regret it greatly that i only notice Gon now 🥺
I personally rank Gon and Killua together as my top favorite characters and can’t place one without the other. I see them as an inseparable team that compliments each other. Killua could have been Gon if he had been raised by a loving family and Gon could have been Killua if he had been raised by the assassins. Without Gon Killua might have stayed the course of his family’s legacy and without Killua Gon may have taken longer to understand that not everyone who does bad for bad reasons is a bad person and therefore undeserving of love and friendship and could have easily killed or destroyed those without remorse because he’d feel it was justified. I’ve only seen the 2011 series so I’ve seen very little of the entire franchise base but I feel the series isn’t the same without the two of them together.
If Gon does return with his abilities I have no doubt that it will be through Leorio pursuing the art of medically focused nen, but I'm just as satisfied with this being the end of Gon's journey. It's sad but grounded in the reality of his vow that he gave everything up to achieve a purpose
While I do think Gon's hatsu is simple, I don't think that Gon doesn't have a hatsu. He probably unknowingly placed a restriction by always saying "First comes rock" which would make it more powerful than just a ko punch.
Gon is 11? Palm might be worse then Hisoka. Although I imagine that if she even tried to kill killlua and Gon. Hisoka & illumi’s deathstare would make Gon’s revival / nanikas wish power like a rain drop. Even if they didn’t know it happened.
I'd love to see you do a ranked poll on favourite Shonen protagonists. It would be interesting to see who would come out on top of the most popular Shonen titles of the last 20 years.
I know I'm late to this video but if not one has said this before. Maybe something happening to his arm is a Easter egg to Vegeta. His arm is always getting messed up as well

I think hisoka vs pitou would be great matchup tho. Cunning flexibality vs rar power
Edit: what if not bisky instead hisoka train them in the knuckle training segmente
And number 11, Gon is ACTUALLY Ging's hatsu
Gon was the reason I stuck around with this show...I can’t believe such a complex character would be over looked. Eff what anybody says Gon was one of the best protagonist I ever followed
Now that you mention it with #9, Gon really does display more spatial and situational intelligence than most people give him credit for. Though I have always noticed his innate ability to manipulate people and conditions to his benefit, even without being a nen manipulator.
New World , can you please cover the HunterXHunter manga from where the anime ends chapter by chapter and make it a series? That would be amazing !
That would be everything😭 i cant bring myself to read even tho its hxh. But i think u would need to show the chapters and copyright sayin nono to that
Up
He's done recaps for the arcs after the anime.
I'll always have my little theory that gon is not a traditionally conceived human boy and is more like alluka than anything else. That part of him came from the dark continent, or he's like a fraction of Ging that was split off from him through some nen wizardry.
Or he is really gings grandfather that made the map to the dark continent. Remember that seed of youth or whatever they found there
I'd like to think that Beach Boy from jojo's is Gons real hatsu.
You gotta hand it to Gon, he really wins the arms race.
Gon is my favorite. I never understood the love for kurapika tbh like power wise sure, cool powers, but personality wise? Gon blows him outta the water In my opinion. But ig im in the minority.
A hiatus will never stop this man from making content about the story Togashi be damned lol
10:22
His arm was broken in I think almost every or every Hunter x Hunter arc rip Gon’s arm tho
Me and my friends call Gon's monster trasformation: The Gonster.
Much love from one of your Canadian viewers. 😁
Fun fact : Bungee gum has the properties of both rubber and gum.
Are you still reading Black Clover and Jojos? I’d love to hear your final thoughts on Jojolion, if the ending changed anything about the part for you. I’d also like to hear your opinion on the Spade Kingdom arc currently.
11:36 just like kurapika and pyrio just without the brutally slaughtered part 😭
Gon is not my favorite but his transforming was smth else. Also Gon elevates other characters and storyline by being simple like saitama does in one punch man.
Your commentary makes the vids100x more entertaining, luv it
I hope this series actually gets a revisit, look at how amazing DBZ is now. this anime actually has a story, convoluted as it is. Poor Gon no justice and no peace.
Caught me by Surprise there Glad I'm not the only one living in Australia with the even more Dangerous than our Crocodiles & Snakes being our Politicians.
Glad I still continue to follow your channel
This man has put so much hunterxhunter content out, he ran out of hunter clips, that he now has to add himself to fill the screen 😱
I realize why we could say that's it's not *really* an abilty, but I would argue that the power output is much higher than Gon would be able to produce if he had just started practicing the same techniques without the phrase and stance (how much?idk). just a small point i was thinking about.
anyway, love this channel, been watching the one piece one for a while now~
In the dub, Gon still says cougars 😆
8:50 I watched the anime on Netflix and Gon still referred to them as cougars
This dude never sleeps. His work ethic is next level lol
Listening to this on my way to work 🤟
i feel like after this current arch, their going to chill it out and we can get a glimpse of the rest of the characters-
i have a feeling that gon losing his nen and the new world opening up w/ many different powers, as well as a great-(great?) grandfather survived and might still be making a book w/ some unknown ability to do so after a few century's?
i feel like gon's going to come back really strong (character and story wise) and re learn a new element to the world that no one else can
2:17 Canadian here, I've only very rarely heard Zed instead of Zee.
Though I do live in Alberta, which is like the Canadian equivalent of Texas, so maybe that plays a factor.
Pre-Dark Continent idk how Kurapika wins any character polls, and I don't get how Hisoka isn't top of the charts in every poll
a character referring to gon as being 12 while he can't be isn't really a continuity error unless that character would know gon's exact age, and i'm not sure who of the characters actually would??
8:49 He still says cougars in the dub.
I love how in Gon’s reality there is a deeper complexity to the story than in other standard shone anime series🩶🌓✨😊
For that arm thing, Vegeta would be proud of him
Gon may actually be the most interesting protagonist ever.
Done even waste your time if youre gonna comment shit like this
As a huge fan of both Hunter x Hunter and One Piece, the 2 idiots above are the worst types of people to encounter on both the internet and in real life
Ikalgo is the best hunter hunter character and it’s not even close
I think Kuabara is the Yu-Yu H. Counterpart to Leorio, not Kurapika. Kurapika is more like Kurama.
btw in the English dub, Gon straight up says the cougar line instead of calling them fanatics or something.
Killua is much cooler because of his ability and assasin background. His family has even it's own music.
The real lesson here is that BUNGEE GUM is the ability that has the properties of both rubber AND gum.
Gon losing body parts out here like Anakin Skywalker lol
Can someone get in contact with togashi and tell him we give up we don't need manga just give us a light novel version we will be happy for eternity
LOL at Leorio ending
Gon is a starfish and can regrow limbs obviously. Sometimes I wonder if people actually paid attention to the series
Everyone here feels the same as Editor -kun
Never change Sir Liam. Such an adorable lil chonk boy
I love it when you cover yu yu hakusho.
I’m so happy you’re getting sponsorships!
Gon showed his true colors as a monster in the end.
I think Gon not getting the 1st place in Poll, can be fixed with timeskip and a little update on his appearance, maybe kindda how Ging when he was younger
My favorite protagonist, punch freak
The sub translation I watched for HxH 2011 also called those women cougars, so maybe the one you mentioned was censored. A lot of subs now a days end up censored or weirdly "localized", so I would assume that is probably the case for the line changing cougars to fanatics.
Plot twist: The 10 facts about Gon is all part of Truck Kun's plan
He’s a menace!
Lets all wait another 4 years for a chapter w 50 percent text boxes explaining the succesion war
I think the dub actually kept the "cougar" line iirc
Always a good morning with a new injection from NWR ✊🏽
Damn the hotel pun floored me 😭
As I was about to go to sleep I see a mad gone with this is wild
Funny enough the cougar thing was put back in the 2011 version when they dubbed it in english.
Me: Ok that's enough I'm going to bed.
Next video on TH-cam is a video about an Australian talking about fictional characters.
Me: damn it. One more.
6:34 Who is that ? It's certainly NOT Togashi
Fun fact : bungee gum has property of both gum and rubber
What does gon and celestial dragons have in common?
Both threaren to kill an injured person. Then kills the person trying to heal them.
I'd love to see you do a ranked poll on favourite Shonen protagonists. It would be interesting to see who would come out on top of the most popular Shonen titles of the last 20 years.
Gon still says cougars in the dub lol
I know I'm late to this video but if not one has said this before. Maybe something happening to his arm is a Easter egg to Vegeta. His arm is always getting messed up as well
